Yass Magpies advance to end West Belconnen's Canberra Raiders Cup title defence

The Yass Magpies have come out the other side of the Canberra Raiders Cup wilderness to book a spot in the finals and end West Belconnen's premiership defence.

West Belconnen's prayers went unanswered as Yass locked up a finals berth in their second year back in the competition following a 48-22 demolition of Goulburn on Sunday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Yass Magpies 48 (Shaun Davis, Joshua Hall, Steve Naughton, Saipani Aiolupo, Junior Vatikani 2, Scott Naughton, Benny Warner tries; S Davis 8 goals) defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 22 (Dylan Hately, Matt Worboys, Chris Hart, Zach Hart tries; Blake Hewitt 2, C Hart goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Weekend Wrap

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup final four has been decided, with the Yass Magpies and Tuggeranong Bushrangers seizing third and fourth places on the ladder in the final round of the regular season.

The two Queanbeyan teams were defeated on Saturday afternoon, with both the Bushrangers and the West Belconnen Warriors keeping their top four hopes alive... and extinguishing those of the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The final composition of the top four all came down to Sunday's match between the Yass Magpies and Goulburn, with the Magpies making no mistake, winning 48-22.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Yass Magpies highlights

That gave Yass third spot. And it meant that the 2016 premiers, the Warriors, will not have the opportunity to defend their title.

Tuggeranong finished equal with the Warriors on competition points, but qualified in fourth due to a superior points differential.

On Saturday, the Kangaroos were missing a number of key players, including play maker Brent Crisp, and player/coach Aaron Gorrell. Nevertheless, the Roos put in a good showing in the opening half - which was a real arm wrestle.

The Queanbeyan outfit was first to score, when Josh Ayers barged over close to the posts in the ninth minute. West Belconnen could not cross the line until the 27th minute, when Chris Thorley made a great break, setting up a four pointer for winger Ricky Fulivai. A conversion from Bobby Roberts produced the 6-4 half time scoreline in favour of the Warriors.

The game opened up for West Belconnen in the second half. Aidan Greenwood forced his way over the white line in the 51st minute. And shortly after, half Harry Brown set up another Warriors try for Chris Thorley.

The Warriors unleashed some brilliant attack in the 63rd minute, with Ryan McQueen and Harry Brown combining to set up Tori Freeman-Quay for the first of his two tries. He was in again with 11 minutes remaining - giving the Warriors an unassailable 30-4 lead.

With just two minutes left, Kangaroos half Josh Essex almost danced his way to the line, scoring a consolation try for the home team.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, the 30-10 victory was not enough, with the minor premiers, the Queanbeyan Blues losing to the Bushrangers, 42-14, across town at Seiffert Oval. It was the second week in a row that the top of the table Blues have been defeated.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The Queanbeyan teams finished top two, and now meet in Week 1 of the finals at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell expects his team will be able to field a much stronger squad, with the likes of Brent Crisp, Logan Spaander, Jed Simbiken and Gorrell himself returning.

"We were obviously missing a fair chunk, we'll be a totally different side next week. It was a good week to give some blokes an opportunity ... we'll have about eight or nine changes," Gorrell told The Canberra Times.

The Yass Magpies and Tuggeranong Bushrangers face off at Kippax on Sunday. A finals finish is an extraordinary result for the Magpies and player/coach Steve Naughton - after the club returned to the top grade in 2016. They had been absent for three years.

"The club is going really well. A lot of people have put a lot of work in and the community is right behind us," a proud Naughton told The Canberra Times.

Bushrangers coach Justin Giteau, has also made his mark in the far south of Canberra - getting his team to the finals in just his first year as mentor of the Bushrangers.

Canberra Raiders Cup R18 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have handed the Queanbeyan Blues their second defeat in as many weeks, after thumping the table toppers by 28 points.

After having the minor premiership secure, the Blues opted to rest players ahead of the clash which Tuggeranong needed to win to make finals.

The full strength Tuggeranong side ran in eight tries in a demolition job led by Sateki Fetuani who bagged a double on the day.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1 Preview

Image

It is finals time in the Canberra Raiders Cup! There are two block-buster matches, with the Queanbeyan powerhouses facing off in the Grand Final qualifier at Seiffert Oval on Saturday and an elimination final between the Yass Magpies and Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Kippax on Sunday.

The Queanbeyan Blues and Queanbeyan Kangaroos have led the competition for the entire season. The Blues were undefeated up until the final two rounds. They were upset by the 2016 premiers, the West Belconnen Warriors in Round 17, suffering a three point loss. And in their last start, the minor premiers were beaten by the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 42-14 - after resting players, including captain/coach Terry Campese.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have also lost in their last two matches. First, there was an unexpected 36-26 loss to the Woden Valley Rams in Round 17. It was the Rams' first win over the Roos in 12 years - and they came from behind, after trailing 14-0. And last weekend, a Kangaroos team missing a number of key players was defeated, 30-10, by the Warriors.

This weekend, it can be expected that both the Blues and Roos will field full strength teams. Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell expects there will be around "eight or nine changes" to his team's line-up. Key play maker Brent Crisp, Logan Spaander, Jed Simbiken, Troy Whiley and Gorrell himself should all return to the team.

The clash will see the team with the best attack face the team with the best defence. The Kangaroos have averaged 39 points scored per match this season, but the Blues are not far behind, scoring 36 per match. The Blues have conceded an average of 18 points per match, the Roos 19.

The Blues have a 14-2 record for the season, while the Roos are 12-4. In the two contests between the clubs this season, the Blues have won both. It was a 36-26 victory in Round 2 at Seiffert, and a 24-20 win in Round 11 at Freebody. It should be an outstanding contest on Saturday - but the Blues have to be favourites to take the match and progress to the Grand Final.

On Sunday, the third placed Yass Magpies meet the fourth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Kippax. The winner will meet the loser of the Queanbeyan derby next week - while it is the end of the season for the loser.

A finals finish is an extraordinary result for the Magpies and player/coach Steve Naughton - given the club only returned to the top grade in 2016. They had been absent for three years. The Magpies won just four matches in 2016, finishing seventh on the ladder. This season they have won nine and drawn one.

The Bushrangers finished in sixth last season, with a 6-10 record. In 2017, they have won eight and drawn two.

The Magpies have a WLLWW record in their past five matches, while the Bushrangers are on a LDWWW form line.

The losses for Yass were to the two Queanbeyan teams - though they pressed the Kangaroos all the way. They come into the finals with big wins over the Gungahlin Bulls and Goulburn Bulldogs.

The Bushies have had impressive recent victories over the Warriors and the Blues - but their most recent loss was to the Magpies, 24-22, at Greenway in Round 14. Yass went to a big lead in the first half in that match, holding off a huge comeback from Tuggeranong. The Bushrangers defeated the Magpies, 26-16, at Walker Park in Round 5.

The Bushrangers have a better record in attack, while the Magpies have slightly better defence. Tuggeranong have scored an average of 30 points per match, the Magpies 26. Tuggeranong have conceded 23 points per match, Yass 22.

It should be a great contest and either team is capable of a win on the day. But the Bushrangers are coming into the finals with some momentum... so we'll tip Tuggeranong in a close one.

The Greenhouse will be heading to Seiffert Oval on Saturday for the major semi final between the Blues and Roos and we will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. We will be at the critical Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers on Sunday, but will also aim to provide progress scores from the Magpies V Bushrangers clash.

If you're at one of the grounds this weekend, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

And don't forget, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of both matches if you cannot get to the ground:

He's a special player in terms of talent, but he'd need to lift fitness for Mounties. He'd be a great player for a Raiders NSW Premiership team... based in Canberra. He's a great player to watch.

Interesting, would be a great player to invite to preseason training then.
The Lachlan Croker well seems to have run dry and Erin Clark only leaves us with 1 option.

At that size and that age he'd probably have issues in defence out wide.
Still, you don't lose anything by inviting someone to preseason.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos' Brent Crisp to save side from rut

Fly-in, fly-out Queanbeyan Kangaroos star Brent Crisp's premiership hopes could hinge on a semi-final blockbuster on Saturday as he prepares for a two-week stint in Darwin for work.

"It will be a slogfest down there," Crisp said of the clash against the Blues. "Hopefully we can just peg them at the end and get the week off ... It's good we're in the position where we can get a second bite of the cherry."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues burnt to a Crisp by Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Will Queanbeyan Kangaroos star playmaker Brent Crisp be back for the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final? Crisp says he won't, Roos coach Aaron Gorrell says he'll drive to Darwin to make sure he is.

But we might not know until the Kangaroos run out for the grand final in two weeks' time, which they booked a ticket to with their emphatic 48-24 victory over the Queanbeyan Blues in the semi-final at Seiffert Oval.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 48 (Brent Crisp 3, Jedidiah Simbiken 2, Aaron Gorrell, Mitchell Connolly, Bryan Cronan tries; Crisp 8 goals) defeated Queanbeyan Blues 24 (George Stewart 2, Jake Wheeler 2, Thomas Ruediger tries; Terry Campese 2 goals).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Yass Magpies knock out Tuggeranong Bushrangers to advance

Junior Vatikani was in Magpies colours the last time Yass played in the Canberra Raiders Cup finals, and coach Steve Naughton says "that's no coincidence".

The Magpies booked their place in the preliminary final with a 32-18 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Kippax Oval on Sunday.

Yass Magpies 32 (J Vatikani 2, S Aiolupo, J Collins, S Davis, J Smith tries; S Davis 4 goals) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 18 (I Afemui, J Papalii, A Tupou tries; J Mitchell 3 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1 Wrap

Image

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have advanced to the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final - with the Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies set to fight it out for the remaining place in the decider.

The icy winds sweeping across Seiffert Oval did not deter the Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon in the grand final qualifier. The Roos were red hot. The Kangaroos were strengthened by the return of McIntyre Medallist, Brent Crisp, along with Jed Simbiken, Troy Whiley, Logan Spaander and player/coach Aaron Gorrell.

Crisp made his mark immediately, being first to score in just the fourth minute. Gorrell followed up in the 11th minute, playing his 100th match for the west Queanbeyan outfit.

And then the Kangaroos proceeded to simply carve the Blues up. Further tries to Crisp, Simbiken and Connolly gave the Roos a 30-0 lead before the half hour mark.

Blues winger George Stewart put the only points on the board for the home team in the first half, with a try in the corner in the 33rd minute.

Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

Stewart got his double four minutes into the second half. And when fullback Jake Wheeler scored from a huge Terry Campese bomb in the 47th minute, the Blues had reduced the gap to 30-14.

A comeback for the Blues did not seem out of the question, but any hint of it was quickly snuffed out with quick fire tries to Jed Simbiken and Bryan Cronan extending the Roos lead to 28 points by the 60th minute.

Tries to the Blues' Tom Reudiger and Jake Wheeler in the final 20 minutes added a bit of respectability to the score line, but the Roos were really never in danger.

Brent Crisp's try in the 70th minute gave him his hat trick and saw the Kangaroos post 48 points for the afternoon.

Incredibly, Crisp says he's not likely to be playing in the Grand Final, as his work has taken him to Darwin and he'll be depending on his bosses to give him a leave pass to return for the game.

"At this stage no. I wish it was a nice pushover boss of the company, but I've put in three leave forms and two have been denied," Crisp told The Canberra Times.

Coach Aaron Gorrell says he'll drive to Darwin to bring Crisp back if he has to. There's no doubt, he's that important for the Kangaroos.

The Blues have now lost their last three games in a row, after going undefeated in the 14 previous matches. The minor premiers now have a proverbial second bite at the cherry. But Blues captain/coach Terry Campese has a task in front of him, turning his team's form around.

On Sunday, the Yass Magpies kept the dream alive in just their second year back in the top grade - defeating the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Kippax.

Bushrangers forward John Papalii - brother of Raiders second rower, Josh - was the first to score in the 17th minute. He just crashed over and Josh Mitchell's conversion gave Tuggeranong a 6-0 advantage. However the rest of the half belonged to the Magpies.

In the 22nd minute, Yass halfback Scott Naughton put in a kick ahead from near half way - and then freakishly kicked ahead again by winger Jesse Collins, for Shaun Davis to score under the posts. Davis converted his own try, levelling the scores.

Yass took the lead in the 28th minute, after a back line move put Jesse Collins away down the sideline for a four pointer. Yass prop Saipani Aiolupo built on that when he crashed over the white stripe just a few minutes later.

With four minutes to the break, the Magpies produced some electric attack, when centre Willie Pence made a huge break down field 30 metres from the Yass goal line. Fellow centre Junior Vatikani scored off the next play.

Yass Magpies V Tuggeranong Bushrangers hightlights

It was a comfortable 20-6 lead for Yass at half time. But - just like in the last clash between these two teams - the Bushrangers mounted a second half comeback.

Isi Afemui kicked it off in the 49th minute, breaking through a couple of attempted tackles from 10 metres out, scoring under the posts. Prop Atu Tupou burrowed his way over from dummy half in the 57th minute - and all of a sudden, the Magpies' lead was reduced to just two.

Yass replied almost immediately, lifting the tempo after an error from John Papalii deep in the Bushrangers' own half. A long pass was almost intercepted by Tuggeranong winger Jayden Pollard - but Yass regathered and Jai Smith went over in the corner.

That gave the Magpies some breathing room - before a sensational try to Junior Vatikani in the 67th minute sealed the result. Vatikani ran for over 80 metres, stepping and dummying so as to evade the defenders. A penalty goal to Shaun Davis with five minutes remaining produced the final 32-18 scoreline.

It's the end of the road for Tuggeranong, but coach Justin Giteau can feel proud of his team's effort in making the finals.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 2 Preview

Image

There are just two weeks left in the Canberra Raiders Cup for 2017!

One grand finalist is decided. The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have qualified after a big 48-24 win over the minor premiers, the Queanbeyan Blues, in the major semi final at Seiffert Oval last Saturday afternoon.

The Roos' attack simply cut the Blues' defence to pieces - and the match was really all over by half time.

McIntyre Medallist Brent Crisp returned from work in Darwin for the match, along with a range of other players, and the Kangaroos were back to their best.

The Kangaroos had lost to their cross town rivals twice during the regular season, but they dominated the Blues in their most important clash this year... so far.

The Blues started the season with a 14 game winning streak, but have now lost three matches in a row. One of those losses - to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers - reflected a decision to rest a number of key players, given the minor premiership was already locked up.

But Blues coach Terry Campese knows this is not the time of year to be on a three game losing streak.

"We've been down for the last four weeks, we haven't been ourselves and we've got a week to find it back really. We just have to look at ourselves before we look at anyone else," he told The Canberra Times.

The Blues now meet the Yass Magpies in the Preliminary Final this Sunday afternoon at Seiffert Oval.

The Magpies have advanced to Week 2 of the finals, after defeating the Bushrangers, 32-18, in the minor semi final at Kippax on Sunday. Yass were comfortable at half time, and effectively staved off a second half comeback from Tuggeranong.

Co-coaches of the Magpies - brothers and halves partners, Steve and Scott Naughton - were justly recognised with the Coach of the Year award at the McIntyre Medal presentation last week.

Their team has now qualified for the Preliminary Final after just a couple of years back in the top grade of the Canberra Raiders Cup. They had been absent for three years.

The Magpies won just four matches in 2016, finishing seventh on the ladder. This season they have won 10 and drawn one. It's a great achievement for everyone at the Yass club.

The Magpies now have a LLWWW record in their past five matches, while the Blues are on a WWLLL form line.

The looming problem for Yass is that those two losses were to the two Queanbeyan powerhouses.

The Magpies suffered a huge 52-6 loss to the Blues in Round 15 at Walker Park. It was much closer the last time Yass visited Seiffert Oval - with the Blues running out 20-4 winners in Round 6.

But it also needs to be remembered that over the course of the regular season, the Blues ranked first in the league in defence and second in attack. They finished the season with a positive points differential of 291, the Magpies 66.

Despite the recent form, it'll be a huge task for the Magpies to get past the Blues on Sunday. Coach Steve Naughton is under no illusions.

"There's a real buzz around the town, but she's going to be a tough one next week against the Blues. They've been the benchmark all year so we're going to have to play really well to beat them, but anything can happen in footy," he told The Canberra Times.

The Greenhouse will be heading to Seiffert Oval for the Preliminary Final on Sunday and we will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at Seiffert, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

A Brent Crisp inspired Queanbeyan Kangaroos have pulled off one of the upsets of the season to get past the Blues and book their place in the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final.
