All Queanbeyan grand final could make for a cracker of a game. Brent Crisps a beast and the forwards get through a lot of work. But theres no secret Blues were tipped for #1 since round 1.

I can't see which other team could possibly beat either of the Queanbeyan teams. But then I didn't see the Warriors beating the Roos last year in the Grand Final either.

Canberra Raiders Cup Rd 16 Preview

Both West Belconnen and Tuggeranong are treating this clash as a grand final in what is sure to be an exciting matchup in our game of the round.

Last year’s premiers West Belconnen currently sit in 4th position, but a win for the 5th placed Bushrangers would move them above Belconnen on the ladder.

“This week is our grand final,” Warriors forward Aidan Greenwood said. “In the middle they have a very tight, big forward pack, we need a bit more talk in defence and it’ll be a good game that’s for sure.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos pass 200-game milestone together

Troy Whiley and Josh Ayers run out for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos against the Yass Magpies in their 200th games at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

"To play 200 first-grade games for one club is a massive achievement," Ayers said of Whiley. "I didn't really want anyone to know I was playing my 200th game. I'd rather everyone be talking about Troy and what he's done for the Roos.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers look finals bound after beating West Belconnen Warriors

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers all but punched their finals ticket and crushed the hopes of the West Belconnen Warriors with a come-from-behind 34-18 win on Sunday.

"It was a really gutsy win but it doesn't guarantee us anything because this comp is that tight that any team can beat anyone on any day in this competition," Giteau said. "We can't control what other teams do, we can only control ourselves... If they can go in with the right attitude again next week we'll give ourselves every chance."

TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 34 (J Papalii, D Ewings 2, M Uluakiola, Q Cannon, S Fetuani tries; J Mitchell, D Ewings 4 goals) defeated WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 18 (C Thorley, H Brown, A Greenwood tries; R Roberts 3 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Weekend Wrap

Image

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have given their finals hopes a major boost with a 34-18 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax on Sunday.

The match was viewed as a "Grand Final" by both teams, with the Bushrangers two competition points behind the fourth placed Warriors. The Bushrangers have drawn level with the Warriors on competition points - and moved into fourth place, with the teams only separated on points differential.

It was a blow to West Belconnen, who must now face the two Queanbeyan powerhouses in the final two rounds of the regular season - and they must get at least one victory to stay in contention.

Tuggeranong must also face the Queanbeyan Blues on their run home, but should get an easy victory over the Belconnen United Sharks next weekend. That should be enough to see the Bushrangers take a finals slot.

The Warriors were certainly switched on for the start of their match on Sunday - and it was 12-0 to the home team by the 15 minute mark. Their first try was a pearler, a stunning move down the right side, with Ryley Thomas and Ryan McQueen setting up Harry Brown for four points. Then just a few minutes later, a breath taking 40/20 kick set up a try to Warriors half Chris Thorley.

However, the momentum swung with two quick tries in the space of four minutes to Bushrangers forward Dayne Ewings. In the 27th minute, he followed a bomb to the try line and crashed over, reducing the deficit to six points.

Soon after, Tuggeranong winger Jayden Pollard intercepted and made a huge run down field - and it looked like he'd score himself. But he stopped and propped in an effort to evade the defence, but they swooped on him.

That still gave the visitors field position - and a bomb to the corner saw Ewings plant it. It was a controversial moment, as it looked like he had gone touch in goal before he could ground it... but the touch judge ruled otherwise.

In the 35th minute, Quinlyn Cannon chased his own short, bouncing grubber to score... but he could not follow up with a conversion of his own try from close to the posts. The ball hit the right upright. But that was enough to give the Bushies a 14-12 lead at the break.

West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

Tries to the Bushrangers' Michael Uluakiola in the 46th minute and John Papalii in the 59th saw Tuggeranong take their lead to 26-12 - setting up a desperate last 20 minutes from the Warriors.

The Warriors recovered a short kick off after the Papalii try, and that allowed Harry Brown to set up Aidan Greenwood for a four pointer in the 63rd minute. West Belconnen had some hope, trailing 26-18. But errors cost them and they failed to find touch from penalties twice in the final stages.

Tuggeranong edged further ahead after a penalty goal in the 75th minute. The controversy was not over when a minute later, Bushrangers forward John Papalii ran some distance to get involved in an altercation - and it set off a huge melee. Papalii was sent from the field, but the Warriors could not take advantage.

Instead, with two minutes remaining, Tuggeranong's Isi Afemui ran the ball on the last, to set up a long range try to Seteki Fetuani.

Tuggeranong coach Justin Giteau was understandably pleased with the crucial 34-18 victory.

"This is the time of the year when you need to playing that type of tough footy and with the injuries we have, half the battle is getting everyone turning up with the right attitude and giving 100 percent, but that's what happening at the moment," Giteau told The Canberra Times.

On Saturday, a plucky Yass Magpies team recovered from a thrashing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues in Round 15 - and challenged the Queanbeyan Kangaroos all the way at Freebody Oval.

The Kangaroos were celebrating the 200th first grade game milestone for second rower Troy Whiley - who led the team onto the field through a special banner made in his honour. All of those games have been played for the Roos. It was also the 200th first grade game for team mate Josh Ayres, with most of those matches played in his 12 seasons at the Gungahlin Bulls.

The Magpies threatened to spoil the celebrations for a good part of the match - and the Kangaroos looked out of sorts without star play maker Brent Crisp.

Yass led for most of the first half, and only a double from Kangaroos winger Jed Simbiken just before half time gave the Roos a 22-18 half time lead.

Yass struck inside the first two minutes, with an easy try to fullback Andrew Swaffield. The Shaun Davis conversion gave the visitors a 6-0 lead. A try for Queanbeyan's Mitch Connolly reduced the gap to just two points. But when Yass halfback Scott Naughton stepped his way to the try line in the 16th minute, the Magpies had taken an unexpected 12-4 lead.

Kangaroos five eighth, and Raiders Under 20s player, Logan Spaander fooled the defence in the 24th minute with a dummy close to the line. His try and the Josh Essex conversion reduced the gap to 12-10.

But the Roos quickly gave the Magpies another opportunity. They knocked on in goal from the kick off - and then Jed Simbiken knocked on, on the first tackle, after defusing a grubber. The repeat set saw centre William Peace score a four pointer, stretching the Magpies' advantage to 18-10.

Simbiken made up for it it with two tries in the space of five minutes, both the result of his exceptional speed. In the 33rd minute, he chased a grubber to score on the last tackle, and followed that up with a blinding, individual run down the centre of the field. The second of his tries gave the Roos the lead for the first time in the 38th minute.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Yass Magpies highlights

The match see-sawed in the second half. The Magpies were the first to score, when Steve Naughton sent Junior Vatikani on a 40 metre run to the try line in the 45th minute. The conversion from Shaun Davis saw Yass take back the lead, 24-22.

In the 50th minute, Kangaroos half back Josh Essex made a break up the middle of the field and raced away to score under the posts - producing a four point advantage for the Roos.

Four minutes later, Magpies winger Jesse Collins kicked ahead - and and it bounced perfectly for William Peace, who charged across the line out wide. Shaun Davis couldn't convert and that saw the match locked up at 28 all.

However, the Kangaroos took control in the final 20 minutes. A Tolokana Aroha Tuinauvai try in the 59th minute gave the lead back to the home team, 32-28. And then four minutes from the end, Jed Simbiken gathered a kick from Shaun Davis - and he ran nearly 100 metres to score the final four pointer of the match for the Kangaroos.

Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell was less than impressed with the eight point victory.

"That was one of, if not the worst performance we've had all year to be honest," Gorrell told The Canberra Times. "I never thought we weren't going to win but we can't be too happy with what we just dished up."

It was also a much tighter than expected contest at Seiffert Oval, with the Queanbeyan Blues defeating the Woden Valley Rams by just six points, 20-14. With just two rounds to go, the undefeated Blues now seem certain to take the minor premiership.

Queanbeyan Blues V Woden Valley Rams highlights

And in the final match of the round, the Goulburn Bulldogs kept their slim finals hopes alive, with a huge 54-4 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor. Patrick Cooke, Dominic Stephens and Tom Hazelton all scored doubles.

Belconnen United Sharks V Goulburn Bulldogs

Goulburn's 50 point margin significantly reduced their negative points differential. And they have a guaranteed two competition points next week, with a bye. But Goulburn will have to have a big win over the Yass Magpies in their final game of the season - and for results in the Warriors and Bushrangers next two games to fall their way - if they're to somehow slip into fourth place.

Race to the Canberra Raiders Cup finals

The top four has almost taken shape with the two Queanbeyan sides securing the top two positions on the ladder.

The Blues appear destined to claim first place and could wrap up the minor premiership this weekend if they avoid defeat against West Belconnen.

Having lost to Tuggeranong on Sunday, West Belconnen have slipped to fifth place. Although they are level on points with Tuggeranong, they are behind on goal difference with arguably the two toughest fixtures in the competition remaining as they prepare to face both Queanbeyan sides.

Canberra Raiders Cup R16 Wrap

The Woden Valley Rams season is officially over after they succumbed to a narrow defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues.

In a match where they were widely considered underdogs, the Rams more than held their own as they took the lead thanks to tries from Tom Hicks, Jack Hickson and debutant Curtly Jenkinson.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

It is just about "do or die" for the West Belconnen Warriors when they meet the Queanbeyan Blues this Sunday at Kippax in the match of the round of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

After losing to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 34-18, last weekend, the fifth placed West Belconnen now faces an uphill battle to make the top four.

In the final two rounds of the regular season, the Warriors meet the two Queanbeyan powerhouses - which have left all the others in their wake in 2017.

The Warriors must win this week or next to have any chance of a finals placing. And that's easier said than done. The Queanbeyan Blues are undefeated this season, while the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have lost just twice... to the Blues.

The Blues have the best defence in the competition, conceding less than 15 points per match. That's a defensive record any NRL team would be proud to have. They have the second best attack, averaging 38 points per match. The Blues had an unexpectedly close contest last weekend against the Woden Valley Rams, running out 20-14 victors at Seiffert Oval. But if they win this Sunday, they will have wrapped up the minor premiership... so they won't be approaching the game with any complacency.

The Warriors have conceded almost as many points as they've scored (24 points per match scored and conceded on average). They have also lost as many matches as they have won (a 7-7 record). However, the Warriors' form has lifted in the past month; they have a LWWWL record in their past five games. The Blues are 14 and 0.

The last time the two teams met, the Blues recorded a 26-16 win over the Warriors at Seiffert. That suggests it is no "impossible dream" for the Warriors to get a win on their home turf. And West Belconnen will be prepared to play with desperation. But it's difficult to see the Blues missing their chance at the minor premiership. Blues by at least six in this one.

On Saturday, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the last placed Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway. The Bushrangers' victory over the Warriors in Round 16, saw them move into fourth on the competition ladder... on points differential. This match will be their opportunity to solidify their top four placing - and improve their points differential.

The Sharks have won just one match all season, and this is their last chance for another win - as they have a bye in Round 18. They are on a nine game losing streak, and were beaten by a margin of 50 in their last start and 60 two weeks ago. Coach Scott Logan has a huge rebuilding task ahead of him in the off season.

The Bushrangers are on a WWLDW form line in their past five games. Earlier this year, they bettered the Sharks, 44-24, at O'Connor. The Bushies should have no trouble posting a big win in this one.

The other critical clash on Saturday will be played at Walker Park, with the Yass Magpies hosting the eighth placed Gungahlin Bulls. This is a match that Yass should win... and must win. Victory would shore up third place on the ladder for the Magpies - and would likely secure them a finals finish. It would be a remarkable achievement for one of the cellar dwellers of 2016... but they won't be counting their chicks just yet.

The Magpies produced a good performance against the Queanbeayan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval - and led for much of the first half. While they ultimately suffered an eight point loss, they recovered well from the big defeat at the hands of the Blues in Round 15. The Magpies will want to improve their WLWLL form line going into the finals... but they have every opportunity to finish the regular season with a couple of wins.

The Bulls have probably had a season they'd rather forget, having won just once in their past six matches - a victory over the Sharks three weeks ago. The Magpies score as many points as they concede, but on average, the Bulls have conceded seven points more than they post. The last time these teams met, the Magpies were 24-18 winners at Gungahlin.

The Bulls have been hard hit by injury - with just 23 players available across three grades two weeks ago, when they played Goulburn.

"I played both reserves and firsts, and we had blokes from Under 18s playing all three. I think we warmed up with six in first grade, and everyone else was backing up," Bulls centre Brad Scholes told WIN News Canberra.

"Hopefully we'll have Jack Elliott, our captain, back. He looks like he should be back from an ankle injury, and Jake Scholes, our half."

"I reckon we can beat Yass, we got pretty close last time and we beat them twice last year, so hopefully we can just maybe pip them. It'd just be so great for the boys just to get a couple of wins before we finish and just get the morale up."

In the final match on Saturday, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos travel to Phillip to meet the Woden Valley Rams. The Kangaroos have already wrapped up second place - at least - while the Rams are out of finals contention. The Roos are four competition points adrift of the Blues - so it is highly unlikely they can finish any better than second. Regardless, the Kangaroos will be wanting to keep on winning in the lead up to the finals.

The Roos have the best attack in the league, and the second best defence - scoring almost 42 points and conceding 17 points per match on average. They have a positive points differential of +351 - the biggest in the competition -
compared with -104 for the Rams. In their last meeting in Round 8, the Kangaroos defeated the Rams 40-14.

Last week showed that the Kangaroos without Brent Crisp are - understandably - not quite the same team. But either way, it should again be a big margin this time.

The Greenhouse will be heading to Kippax for the Warriors V Blues this Sunday. Our live scores will come to you via @CanberraCup on Twitter, with half and full time scores posted right here.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers coach Justin Giteau says he "feels sorry" for the Belconnen Sharks after they were on the wrong end of a 74-12 thrashing at Greenway Oval on Saturday. The home side ran in 14 tries against the bottom-placed Sharks to all but secure a spot in the Canberra Raiders Cup finals.

"I felt sorry for some of the kids out there today," Giteau said. "It's a good sign when you've got kids playing under 18s and first grade and wanting to do it as well.

West Belconnen Warriors upset Queanbeyan Blues to keep Canberra Raiders Cup hopes alive

The Canberra Raiders Cup is set for a thrilling final round leading into the finals with four teams still vying for third and fourth on the ladder after Wests ended the Queanbeyan Blues' hopes of going through the season undefeated.

"We've been off it the last few weeks ... I'm not sure if it's a bit of attitude mentally," Blues coach Terry Campese said. "We found out last night we had the minor premiership when the Roos got knocked off yesterday as well. Sometimes these things play in the mind."

I have to say... that was one exciting game at Kippax this afternoon. The Blues looked like they were in cruise control... and then the Warriors came back, they had all the momentum and just controlled the territory and ball perfectly. Great afternoon at footy... despite the fact the winds were icy and there were a fair few spots of rain... I'm surprised it wasn't snow and a blizzard. It was really worth going to. I've seen some great Canberra Raiders Cup games this year.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Weekend Wrap

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors have kept their finals hopes alive by defeating the previously undefeated Queanbeyan Blues on an icy Sunday afternoon.

It looked like the Blues would again cruise to a win when they went to a 28-16 lead, 12 minutes into the second half. But the final quarter of the match belonged to the home team.

The Blues started with intent, their driving defence pushing the Warriors back in goal on the first tackle after the kick off. And the opening stages were a real arm wrestle, as the teams battled for ascendancy.

In the 15th minute, a Bobby Roberts kick ahead started the scoring, with chaser Taniela Moa crossing the line. The Blues then took control, with two tries to Thomas Reudiger, giving the Queanbeyan outfit a 10-6 lead just before the half hour mark.

Blues prop Aaron McInnes followed that up just a few minutes later, charging though the Warriors defensive line and scoring under the posts - giving the visitors a 10 point advantage.

In the 36th minute, Warriors forward Aidan Greenwood made a huge break, with captain Ryan McQueen backing up to score the four pointer. It was a huge fillip to the home team's chances, and it seemed certain they would trail be just two at the break.

But with less than a minute remaining in the first half, Blues centre Tyler Stevens scored out wide, set up by a good run from Reudiger down the sideline. Blues captain/coach Terry Campese converted from the sideline, producing a 22-12 lead at half time.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

In the 48th minute, the Warriors' Chris Thorley conjured a try, but the Blues stand in fullback, Thomas Reudiger completed his hat trick just three minutes later.

That was to be the last of the scoring for Queanbeyan, with the Blues' errors gifting possession, territory and momentum to Warriors - allowing the West Belconnen forwards to dominate.

Ricky Fulivai scored for the Warriors in the 56th minute, after a Bobby Roberts bomb to the try line. And it was all tied up, 28-28, in the 62nd minute, when the Warriors elected to run on the final tackle and Chris Thorley scored the second of his two tries.

It set up an enthralling final quarter of the match, with a Bobby Roberts field goal finally breaking the deadlock in the 71st minute. And he sealed the 31-28 victory with penalty goal from in front as the final siren sounded.

Terry Campese paid tribute to the performance of Bobby Roberts, whose kicking ultimately proved the difference between the teams.

"We spoke about it through the week that he kills you with his kicks and I think they scored a couple of tries off his kicks and the field goal, and his goal kicking was up there as well," Campese told The Canberra Times. "It was one of the biggest difference today. He got a couple of repeat sets as well with his bombs and stuff like that.

The weekend's results set up a fascinating final round of the regular season next week.

The Warriors win sees them level with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on 20 competition points. However, Tuggeranong piled on the points in their 74-12 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks on Saturday - and points differential could prove vital in determining the top four.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Belconnen United Sharks

The Bushrangers currently hold fourth place thanks to a +80 points differential. The Warriors only have a points differential of +5.

The Yass Magpies solidified their hold on third place, with a bit 44-4 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls.

Yass Magpies V Gungahlin Bulls highlights

The Warriors face the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the final round of the regular season next week, while the Bushrangers meet the Blues.

The Queanbeyan powerhouses could have been expected to easily overpower both Bushies and Westies - prior to last weekend. However, both Queanbeyan teams stumbled on the weekend - with the Roos upset by the Woden Valley Rams, 36-26. It was the Rams' first win over the Roos in 12 years - and they came from behind, after trailing 14-0.

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

Meanwhile, the Magpies can secure third with a win over the Goulburn Bulldogs next week. But if Goulburn can win, and Tuggeranong and West Belconnen lose, there will be three teams on 20 points - and which of them grabs fourth will come down to for and against. Goulburn's chances are still slim, however - as they currently have a points differential of -65.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos player/coach Aaron Gorrell to hang up the boots after this season

AFTER more than 16 seasons and four clubs, Queanbeyan Kangaroos captain-coach Aaron Gorrell will hang up the boots at the end of the season. Gorrell, 36, never thought his career would last this long due to a raft of injuries.

“I’ll play 100 games next weekend, but I didn’t think I’d get there,” Gorrell said. “I wasn’t going to go around again this year, but the club raised that record and I thought I could get there as long as I remained injury free.

Canberra Raiders Cup Round 17 Wrap

In the upset of the season the West Belconnen Warriors have handed the Queanbeyan Blues their first defeat of the year and shown they are serious premiership contenders.

After 17 rounds of the Canberra Raiders Cup the Blues previously held an unbeaten recorded and looked to go the whole season without dropping a game.

But West Belconnen showed the skill and ability that won them the competition last year in a game which went down to the wire.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

It is the final round of the regular season in the Canberra Raiders Cup and places in the top four are on the line in three matches.

Saturday is definitely Super Saturday this week. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers and West Belconnen Warriors are equal on 20 competition points - with the Bushrangers placed fourth on for and against, the Warriors fifth. Both travel to Queanbeyan to take on the two powerhouse teams of the competition. It is must win for both the Bushies and Westies.

On Sunday, the Yass Magpies have the opportunity to wrap up third place when they go to Goulburn to face the Bulldogs. Goulburn will be hoping to stop them and to keep their own slim finals chances alive. But if both Tuggeranong and West Belconnen win, Goulburn has no chance of playing finals football... and Yass will need to win, just to make the top four.

The Queanbeyan Blues suffered their first defeat of the season, 31-28, at the hands of the Warriors, last Sunday. They have already secured the minor premiership, but they will not want to lose another match on the eve of the finals when they host Tuggeranong at Seiffert.

The Bushrangers will fancy their chances, given the Blues' stumble last weekend. But let's remember a few facts. The Blues were on a 14 game winning streak before Round 17. They are the best defensive team in the competition, conceding an average of just 16 points per match. They score an average of 37 points per match, and are second only to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in attack in 2017.

Tuggeranong has produced some good performances in the past two weeks, but their record of seven wins, six losses and two draws is no match for the Blues' record. The Bushrangers are on a WLDWW form line in the past five matches. They piled on 74 points in their most recent start - against the last placed Belconnen United Sharks. And that has helped the Bushies' points differential considerably. They now average 29 points scored per match and 23 conceded.

When these two sides last met, in Round 9 at Greenway, the Blues ran away with the match, 34-12. The most likely outcome this weekend is a solid Blues win. But if the Blues repeat the sorts of errors they made in the final stages against the Warriors last week, opportunity may well knock for the Bushrangers.

Across town, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos will host the 2016 premiers, the West Belconnen Warriors. Last Saturday, the Kangaroos were upset by the Woden Valley Rams, 36-26, at Phillip - with the Rams producing a huge comeback, after trailing by 14 points. It was just the third loss of the season for the Roos, after two earlier losses to the Blues.

Like the Bushrangers, the Warriors might see their opposition as a little vulnerable. Certainly, the Roos have not looked as strong when they are missing star play maker Brent Crisp. But it will be no easy task for the Warriors to spring another upset. The Kangaroos have the best attacking record in the competition (averaging over 40 points per match), and the second best defence (conceding 17 points per match). They have out-scored their opponents this year by a total of 341 points.

In contrast, the Warriors have struggled a little in 2017. They are 8 and 7, while the Kangaroos are 12 and 3. The Warriors have also conceded almost as many points as they have scored. However, West Belconnen have lifted their form recently - and both teams have lost only one game in their past five matches.

The Kangaroos produced a huge 64-18 win over the Warriors when they clashed in Round 9 this year. And the most likely outcome is a win for the home team. But it should be a great, desperate contest.

Both Yass and Goulburn will know what they need to do when their match kicks off on Sunday - and whether Goulburn is still in the hunt. Even if both Queanbeyan sides prevail, the Bulldogs chances are slim - given their negative points differential of 65.

The Magpies have been the surprise packets of 2017, but player/coach Steve Naughton has done a remarkable job in rebuilding the Yass club. Their recent form has been a little patchy (a LWLLW form line) - but it is not much different to the Bulldogs' recent record (LLLWW). Yass recorded a big 44-4 victory over the Gunghalin Bulls in their last start, while the Bulldogs defeated the Sharks 54-4 in their most recent match.

The two teams have a similar attacking record (scoring around 25 points per match), but the Magpies have the better defence (conceding 22 points per match, compared with 30 for the Bulldogs). In their last meeting, Yass won 34-22. Goulburn will have the home ground advantage this week, but the Magpies should be a little too strong.

The remaining match, between the Gunghalin Bulls and Woden Valley Rams, has no bearing on the finals. We will tip the Rams in this one... given recent form and the severe injury toll being suffered by the Bulls.

The Greenhouse will be heading to Auckland for the Canberra Raiders clash with the New Zealand Warriors this weekend, but we will aim to bring you progress and full time scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter.

Former Canberra Raiders u20s player Cleveland McGhie hopes NSW country champs relaunch career

Cleveland McGhie had hit a dark patch.

"I lost interest in the game ... I had some family things come up. I had a couple of passings in the family and lost both my Pops to cancer and just lost my interest in the game. "Football was a chore rather than something I loved to do and enjoyed. That was the main reason for me stepping away and I've gotten back to enjoying football I guess."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos gun Tolokana Aroha-Tuinauvai eyeing win over former club

Queanbeyan Kangaroos centre Tolokana Aroha-Tuinauvai knows a lot can change in 11 months. Last year he helped the West Belconnen to a grand final win over the Roos, and now the shoe is on the other foot as he looks to end the Warriors' title defence.

"I cannot wait to get out there and rip in," Aroha-Tuinauvai said.

Canberra Raiders Cup R18 Preview

The defending premiers enter this weekend’s match with a simple equation. Win, and they are a chance of making the finals. Lose, and they can kiss their season goodbye.

“After getting over the Blues, it’s given us a lot of confidence for us,” Connor Brebner said. “We thought we were done but then after beating the Blues we’re really getting up there. If we turn up with the right attitude we can beat the Kangaroos.”
