Canberra Raiders V Melbourne Storm
Saturday July 22 3:15pm Canberra Stadium

The Holden Cup Canberra Raiders took another big scalp last Friday night, when they defeated the second placed St George Illawarra Dragons, 18-12. It's the second week in a row that the young Raiders have defeated a team in the top four.

The first half was a struggle, with both teams spilling plenty of ball in damp conditions. The Dragons were first to score, in the 16th minute, when prop Stuart Mason crashed over from close range - producing a 6-0 lead. Despite the visitors putting plenty of pressure on the Green Machine, that was the only try they would score in the first 40, with Canberra's defence remaining solid. Their only other points came courtesy of a Jackson Willis penalty goal in the 31st minute.

Canberra struck for the first time in the match just before half time. Fabien Paletua-Kiri virtually strolled through the Dragons' line, scoring under the posts in the 38th minute. A conversion for Andre Niko delivered a 8-6 scoreline in favour of the "Red V" at the break.

The Raiders continued with their comeback in the 47th minute, when winger Wesley Tameifuna fended his way to the try line, scoring in the corner - despite appearing to be well covered by the Dragons' defenders. Niko failed to convert from the sideline, but Canberra had taken a 10-8 lead. Canberra went further into the lead in the 65th minute, when a big incursion down the left side was finished off by centre Sebastian Kris. And then just three minutes later, Tameifuna took advantage of an overlap and scored his second four pointer after a powerhouse run to the corner.

Canberra had a 10 point advantage with 10 minutes remaining - and the Dragons launched a flurry of attacking football. But despite a Reuben Garrick try in the 76th minute, the Green Machine's defence was desperate enough to hold on for the win. Half Paul Roache was named the man of the match.

Canberra remain in 11th position on the ladder, but they are just two competition points behind the sixth placed Cowboys, and four competition points behind the fourth placed Sea Eagles. If they can keep up their current form, they can make a charge for a top eight finish.

The Raiders face the 12th placed Melbourne Storm on Saturday afternoon. The "Thunderbolts" have just one less win than Canberra, but have suffered some big defeats in recent weeks. In their last start, they were given a 48-16 hiding by the Parramatta Eels at "home" on the Sunshine Coast in Round 18. The Eels eventually piled on nine tries to three, after the Eels led 22-10 at half time. Melbourne was defeated by the Brisbane Broncos at Lang Park, 48-18, in Round 17.

The "Thunderbolts" have a LWWLL record in their past five matches - their wins being a one point victory over the Roosters, and a two point victory over the Cowboys. The Raiders are on a LLLWW form line.

Melbourne has a slightly better attacking record than Canberra - averaging 25.4 points (4.8 tries) scored per match, compared with 24.4 points (4.5 tries) per match for the Raiders. However, the "Thunderbolts" have the second worst defence in the league - conceding nearly six tries per match on average (under five for the Raiders). In addition, no team misses more tackles than Melbourne (45 per match). Unfortunately, Canberra is not too far off that mark themselves. The Raiders have a very good record at home (7-2) - in fact, it's near the best in the league. Melbourne actually has a better record away (4-5) than at home.

Team changes: For the Raiders, captain Kalani Going (broken hand) has been replaced in the second row by Hudson Young. Jarred Tuite comes into the starting team as lock and stand-in captain. Wesley Tameifuna will start on the wing after a big game last week, with Komiti Tuilagi dropping back to the bench.

For the Storm, Sale Finau comes in at centre. Harry Grant has been included at starting hooker, with Caleb Daunt moving to lock. Clayton Dodt (prop) and Jacob Tonge (second row) are named in the starting pack. Jake Elmore, Dechlan Day, Dale Madden and Jirah Momoisea fill out the top 17 on the bench.

Our tip: The Raiders will need to watch halfback Matt Egan and hooker Harry Grant - with the two spine players dominating the try assists for the "Thunderbolts". Grant represented the Maroons in the Under 20s Origin this year; while Melbourne winger Kea Pere turned out for the Under 18s Queensland team. Storm players Brodie Croft and Curtis Scott also represented in the Under 20s Origin. Imagine how strong the "Thunderbolts" would be if those players - and half Scott Drinkwater - were turning out in Holden Cup regularly, rather than in the Queensland Cup. Centres Sale Finau and Jesse Arthars are other players to watch - they're topping the charts for line breaks and tries.

The Raiders are weakened by the loss of Kalani Going, but Hudgson Young is an able replacement. And this Canberra team looks like a different side, with Paul Roache and Erin Clark in play making roles. The recent form of the two teams is almost at polar opposites - with the Storm conceding more than 30 points in their past three matches. We'll tip the Raiders to continue on their winning ways at home.

NYC Match Preview: Raiders v Storm

The Canberra Raiders NYC side are hoping to bag three wins in a row for the second time this year when they face off against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday.

Currently stuck in 11th position, the Raiders will be desperate for a win over the lower placed Melbourne Storm if they are to stay in touch with the top eight. With a logjam of teams battling it out for the last few spots in the finals, Brett White’s men will be hoping for a big performance.

Holden Cup Round 20 previews

Raiders v Storm

This shapes as a mini elimination final between two sides still in the race for a top eight berth but with plenty of work to do with seven games remaining.

The Raiders are fresh from a tight win over the high-flying Dragons and will fancy their chances at GIO Stadium where they are 7-2 this season.

The Thunderbolts have lost two on the trot and need to fix their defence if they are to have any hope of reaching the finals for the first time since 2011.

Tip: Raiders by 12

NYC MATCH REPORT: Storm surge overcomes Holden Cup Canberra Raiders

Two quick tries early in the second half have seen the Canberra Raiders U20s succumb to a 36-24 defeat at the hands of the Melbourne Storm in the NYC at GIO Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders scored late in the opening half to make things 26-12 at half-time, but any hope of a Canberra comeback was quickly extinguished as Melbourne crossed for two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza.
