Canberra Raiders V Penrith Panthers
Saturday 10 June 1:00pm Penrith Stadium

The Holden Cup Canberra Raiders suffered a convincing 34-18 defeat at the hands of the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale in Round 13.

The Raiders went out to an early lead when winger Mikaele Ravalawa was put into space out wide - and that try was followed up by second rower Jacob Field, who scored off the back of a Lachlan Cooper grubber. The Raiders led 10-0 after just 15 minutes, but the Sea Eagles rebounded with three tries - giving the home team a 16-12 lead at the break.

Canberra came back from the sheds with renewed vigour, and threatened a number of times - but a niggling Manly were prepared to do anything - including to give penalties away - to defend their line. Eventually, the momentum turned the way of the Sea Eagles. Manly scored two quick tries - to Josh Martin in the 57th and to Taniela Paseka in the 62nd minute - and the score suddenly blew out to 26-12.

The Raiders looked like they had scored for sure and certain in the 65th minute, but Komiti Tuilagi was ruled to be held up over the line on the final tackle. Five minutes later, the frustration bubbled over, with an all-in dust up ruled to be initiated by Raiders forward Zac Masters. Manly quickly made the Raiders pay, with winger Jade Anderson going over in the corner on the back of the penalty

The Raiders scored a spectacular try after they regathered the ball from the ensuing kick off - with winger Mikaele Ravalawa crashing over to finish the movement. It narrowed the gap to 30-18 with five minutes remaining. But another try to winger Jade Anderson in the final minute sealed it for the Sea Eagles.

The loss sees the Raiders fall to 10th place on the competition ladder - two competition points away from the top eight. It only gets tougher this weekend, when Canberra meet the second placed Penrith. The Panthers have lost just twice this season and are on the same competition points as the first placed Sharks.

The Panthers cruised to a 28-12 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs last weekend at Belmore Sports Ground. They piled on four tries in the first half, going to the break with a 22-6 lead. The second half was low scoring, but captain Wayde Egan put the match beyond doubt with five minutes remaining, crossing for his second try of the day - and his 12th for the season. Panthers winger Jamon Wormleaton also posted a double.

The Panthers have won four of their past five matches - but did suffer a six point loss to the Newcastle Knights in Round 11 at Hunter Stadium. The Raiders have a WLLWL form line. The Panthers rank second in the league in attack - averaging 33 points and six tries per match. In comparison, the Raiders average 24.5 points and 4.5 tries per match. The Panthers have the best defence in the competition, conceding just a little over three tries per match, compared to five for the Raiders.

The Raiders have lost fullback Harry Van Dartel after he suffered an ankle injury against the Sea Eagles. Van Dartel will be missed, as he's scored six tries and is averaging over 150 metres from 14 runs per match.

Timoci Vatubuli will debut in green in the No. 1 jersey. Vatubuli has a Fijian background - and has previously played junior football in Wagga Wagga and in the Parramatta district with Wentworthville. Most recently, he's been turning out with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the centres.

Derek Hay made a good debut in the halves last weekend when he was a late inclusion for Jayden Carroll. He retains his place at five eighth, alongside half Lachlan Cooper.

For the Panthers, Daniel Brown returns on the wing and Stefano Hala at prop - after they were late omissions last weekend. The Raiders will have to watch Brown: he's scored 10 tries this season. Hala's likely to cause some damage as well: he's averaging 130 metres from 12 runs and 15 tackles per match. Tevita Mapapalangi drops back to the bench, while Mitch Revell retains his place in the top 17 after being a late inclusion last week.

Our tip: It will be tough ask for the Raiders to win this one, away from home. Panthers by 12.

Why have the Raiders not supplied a team list 2 weeks in a row?

Part of the continued downgrading of the Holden Cup I'm assuming.

Penrith Panthers prevail over Canberra Raiders in NYC battle

The NYC Panthers have jumped to equal first on the Holden Cup ladder after a 28-22 win over Canberra Raiders at Pepper Stadium.

The Panthers were kept honest for large parts of the game as a dogged Canberra outfit kept themselves within reach, before the Panthers ran in two second-half tries to seal victory.
