Four Nations 2016: Canberra Raiders Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead named in 24-man England squad

England coach Wayne Bennett has named Canberra Raiders Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead in a 24 man squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

"There's some serious talent in this English side," said Bennett. "I've always said that there wouldn't be too many changes and there are plenty of guys in the squad who worked hard in last year's series win against New Zealand who have gone on and performed in 2016."

Full squad: John Bateman (Wigan Warriors); Kevin Brown (Widnes Vikings); George Burgess; Sam Burgess; Thomas Burgess (all South Sydney Rabbitohs); Daryl Clark (Warrington Wolves); Mike Cooper (Warrington Wolves/St George-Illwarra Dragons); Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors); Brett Ferres (Leeds Rhinos); Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers); James Graham (Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs); Ryan Hall (Leeds Rhinos); Chris Hill (Warrington Wolves); Josh Hodgson (Canberra Raiders); Jonny Lomax (St Helens); Jermaine McGillvary (Huddersfield Giants); Mark Percival (St Helens); Stefan Ratchford (Warrington Wolves); Dan Sarginson (Wigan Warriors/Gold Coast Titans); Scott Taylor (Hull FC); Kallum Watkins (Leeds Rhinos); Elliott Whitehead (Canberra Raiders); Gareth Widdop (St George Illawarra Dragons); George Williams (Wigan Warriors).

Bennett's made some good calls there. I had a number of 'expert" pommie mates swearing black and blue that Joe Burgess would be on the wing. Can you imagine someone that has played that badly this year getting a test jersey?

The call I don't understand though is leaving out the Super League player of the year Danny Houghton. Surely you'd want the second best hooker in the squad somewhere. I get that Daryl Clark is an excellent impact player but I'd still be tempted to have Houghton in there somewhere.

When was the last time we had 6 current internationals in the top tier nations? It must be 94. Crazy it could have been 7 or 8 if not for injury.

Scott Taylor's the guy we need to sign. Perfect replacement for Vaughan.

Did Hardaker get overlooked? That seems very odd to me if it is indeed the case.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

The spine is also way too pathetic to omit James Roby.

Yeah, seems like their best option might be Hodgson at halfback and Roby at hooker.

No way. Hodgo needs to play 60+ mins at hooker.

Roby is injured and by all reports out of form.

Can't wait to see how Hodgo goes this year.

Clark, Hodgson and then Houghton would be the best English hooker available from what I have seen.

The combination of Hodgson and Clark is the best way to go IMO.

George Williams needs to be picked at 5/8.

Hardaker had too much of a quiet/dud season for Bennett to consider maybe

No way you play the worlds best hooker at half. No way.

2nd best hooker
But I digress

Ordinarily you wouldn't
But I don't think England have any halves and they have a few capable hookers. For a team like that it's about putting best 17 footballers on the park and figuring how it best suits

You'd rather have Roby as a 7/10 hooker and Hodgson as a 7/10 half than Hodgson a 9/10 hooker and a 4/10 half

I don't follow the game over there so I've got no idea why Roby has been left out

George Williams, Luke Gale, Stefan Ratchford (FB or 5/8) and Kevin Brown.

George Williams is a running 5/8 and pretty good from what I've seen. 21 YO and probably the future.

Four Nations: Canberra Raiders Josh Hodgson most influential NRL player

Josh Hodgson is the most influential player in the NRL and can have a big say in the Four Nations for England this Autumn, according to ex-national team coach Steve McNamara.

"Without a shadow of doubt, Josh is the most influential player for any team in the NRL. Forget whether he is the Dally M, that's a voting system which you can argue about, although it's produced two great winners. But if there's is anyone who is the most influential player for one team, it has to be Josh Hodgson at Canberra he's had a fantastic year.
