Challenge Shield concept

Post by -TW- »

This is something that the NRC currently does and I thought it would be cool to see it in the NRL.

Essentially what happens is the shield is put up for grabs at the current holders home game, they win they keep it, they lose the challenger holds it. It is optional to put the shield up for challenge at an away game. If the holder retains it twice in a row then at the third game it will be up for grabs, regardless if the holder is playing at home or away.

At the end of the regular season the team in possession of the shield is the winner and the defence starts in their first home game, unless they put it up for challenge in an away game

Thoughts?

Challenge Shield. Like most good government papers, the best bit is in the title. Otherwise it sounds a bit like Uno for football.
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Like a riot squad shield? Marvel's agents of shield? Some sort of manufactured trophy put up between clubs on a random club rugby basis?

What kind of advantage is gained from putting it up for grabs and winning?

You would've had the shield if you didn't put it up for grabs.

You have to at home games, otherwise one team would just keep it

I think they actually have a few of these already, usually in memory of someone who played at both clubs. I think some are put up every game and some are saved for trials.

The NRC system seems pretty meaningless.

Yes but why do you want it? This sounds like an awful lot of work.

It sounds like the footy version of an abc radio quiz where someone answers most of the questions but then the phone line drops out and whoever was next on the line wins the prize after answering one question!

Is this quiz on at 11pm?

Challenge Shield concept

Post by Raider Bell »

The concept seems a bit stupid to me.

A. What do you really "win"? Nothing as far as I can tell.
B. A team may not even come across a chance to win it in an entire season?

Honestly, I'd rather win the 9's, which is something I care slightly more than zero about.

Depends how it's setup I guess, the ARU is up **** creek so they can't really offer anything, but you could tie a carrot to it for winning it

Challenge Shield concept

Post by Raider Bell »

Yeah, I guess so. A pride thing to win I suppose.

There's too many holes I can think of though, who starts with it? You'd have to devise a way each team gets a crack, I.e draw teams and every week for the first 16 rounds it gets challenged, which is still a massively flawed concept because the team coming last could jag a win and take it.

I dunno. Can't say I'm the biggest fan.

I guess to start the team who is in 1st holds it for week 1 and then goes from there

Saves it going to the channel 9 game of the round winner

Tell you what I reckon there's absolutely nothing we should be taking from the NRC besides the fact that Rugby Union is on the nose.

I don't much like the concept (Minor Premiership, Premiership and Dally M awards are the key awards for the season), but looked at results this year out of interest. If it followed the same rules as the Wikipedia article states (ie. contested at home games for first two wins, but then contested for each subsequent game) and North QLD started the year, here is how it would have finished in 2016;

Cowboys begin 2016
1 – Cowboys (H – W)
2 - Cowboys (A - L) - not contested
3 – Cowboys (H – W) - 2nd Home win - to be contested in subsequent fixture
4 – Broncos (H – W)
5 – Broncos (A – W)
6 – Broncos (H – W)
7 – Broncos (H – W)
8 – Broncos (H – W) - 4th Home win - to be contested in subsequent fixture
9 – Sharks (H – W)
10 – Sharks (A – W)
11 – Sharks (H – W)
12 – BYE
13 – Sharks (A – W)
14 – Sharks (H – W)
15 – BYE
16 – Sharks (H – W)
17 – Sharks (H – W)
18 – Sharks (A – W)
19 – Sharks (A – W)
20 – Sharks (H – W)
21 – Sharks (A – D)
22 – Raiders (A – W)
23 – Raiders (H – W)
24 – Raiders (H – W)
25 – Raiders (A – W)
26 – Raiders (A – W)

-----------

F1 – Sharks (A – W)
F3 – Sharks v Cowboys - Winner takes the Shield
GF – Winner of F3 V Raiders / Storm (away game, so not up for grabs)

If it was to end with the regular season, we would have won it this year.

Also, I don't like the fact the Broncos would have held the shield for a period of time.

At least he didn't suggest a comp where park teams get the chance to prove the elite competition teams are really park teams with big budgets

The FFA/FA cup is a stupid concept as top line teams who play the lower teams barely try, most times they'll fall over the line with a c grade squad

I think the FA cup style comp works OK in soccer, where the elite professional team doesn't have the ability to physically murder their opposition.
