The public service thread

Post by papabear »

I am sure everybody has funny stories to tell.

http://www.smh.com.au/national/public-s ... 16toc.html

In my opinion the whole thing is silly and I would resign as opposed to hanging around in a place were my reputation was associated with the above, that said maybe the people did, its hard to know.

When I was working for the Health Insurance Commission (now Medicare/Dept. of Human Services) back around 1999 there was an amusing incident. The machine room people were having a Christmas party lunch and one of the participants decided to bring in a platter of marijuana cookies and passed them around. It has been debated whether or not the consumers of the cookies knew what they were eating, but two of the more elderly participants ended up in hospital as a result.

You would have thought the woman responsible was fired, but she managed to get off on some technicality that I cannot recall at the moment. HIC ended up moving her out of the machine room and into the IT department where she joined my team doing 2nd/3rd level desktop/server support. 6 months later she was outsourced to IBM with a guaranteed job and got a nice termination payout (as we all did).

Now she does VIP support for...

Dept. of Human Services.

So basically she was in a dead end job, got a whole bunch of people **** up on dope cookies at a lunchtime work function, ended up on a much better career path with a big fat termination payout in her pocket, and is now back at the same organisation on much better money.

Someone could tell me this is a fake article and I could believe that. That's ludicrous.

Ah the public service. Is there a more dysfunctional organisation? I'm sure that the majority of pubes are hard working, but there is a minority in any organisation who are inherently lazy. The promise of a job for life tends not to inspire those people.

The best part is this article comes out 2 months after the issue was resolved, the 5 years it took to resolve it, nothing
Its probably for the best that i leave my comments there, as i was pretty close to this thing and... well anyways.

I think that very few workplaces have a job for life mentality. At least in private business you can ditch the lazy pricks. If you don't, you reap your own rewards.

No such luxury in the PS. Guy that lived next door to my folks was in pool of people that didn't have a position (read nobody wanted), wouldn't take a retrenchment and couldn't be sacked. He turned up every day, read the paper, went for a swim, had a long lunch, came back, finished the paper and went home. Went on for years until he retired on a healthy super package at the ripe old age of 55.

The op mate he has a job that is regulated by the govt and they find it inconvenient.

I must say though while with four kids I haven't found a paediatrician that isn't a far better person that me, the stories my medical rep friends tell me about gp's would curl your hair.

Damn drunk and broke my no posting in the of season rule

bit sensitive SB :P

Govt regulation in my line of work, works well. Keeps barriers to entry nice and high and gets rid of the shonkies.

I just read the story and thought this is as good a place as any to have this sort of thread.

I was discussing a show called "The HollowMen", an aussie take on "Yes minister" with some senior public servants recently.

They were convinced the writers of that show had been leaked al ot of information, as ridiculously funny as the episodes were, most of them were frighteningly accurate.

For those that like a good political comedy, i strongly recommend the Hollowmen

Needs more The Games.

Such classics as "how long is the 100m track?" And "no, we didn't invite the frogs, perhaps on the basis that frogs can't read" and "MEET YOU AT RENT-A-CAR" and "you can't keep a dead body in here - I think you can, take a look at this" and "we don't have to pretend we're running the Olympics and we have problems, WE ARE running the Olympics and we have problems" and "any more questions about lacrosse?"... I could go on and on partially correctly quoting the show.

I imagine being in QANGOs is exactly like that. I think John Clarke is the best Australia hero ever that's really a Kiwi.
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

It was a little bit mean, but it's nothing to quit your job over. Especially as it didn't seem to be an ongoing thing.

Workplace bullying is a fact of life but the only way to deal with it is to challenge it and it appears this guy didn't really do that. Hard to feel sorry for people when they don't do themselves any favours.

I agree GeM. Our raping and pillaging of the earth is also a way of life. If the planet can't challenge us over that than its very hard to feel sorry for it.

No wait, that wasn't the intended effect I wanted, let me try again.

Rape is a fact of life but the only way to deal with it is to challenge it and it appears most women don't really do that. Hard to feel sorry for women when they don't do themselves any favours.

Ahhhh, much better.

I seriously can't believe a left wing radical such as yourself just said what you said.

You're a little light on comprehension skills and your analogy stinks. The guy is a public servant so would have had access to an equity contact officer to address his concerns. According to the report he didn't and now he is complaining about his treatment after accepting a voluntary redundancy payout.

That doesn't diminish or excuse the bullying but IMO he chose the wrong path to resolution and there are consequences for that. It isn't like this guy was a junior public servant either. He was an EL1.
