Raiders all time out of position XIII

Post by julian87 »

Talk of Vaughan being used in the backrow got me thinking of positional selections our coaches have got terribly wrong over the years, see if we can make a team. I'm too young to do the 80s, but we should be able to make a team just from the Elliott era. Anyway, I'll punch a few in to start. Not a team of strugglers, but a team of blokes who when used out of position were terrible.

1. David Howell (at the backend of 2007 I think, played the last 6 or so games there and was predictably terrible, my gf at the time knew Howell simply as butterfingers)
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. Terry Martin (say no more)
7. Adam Mogg/Brad Drew
8.
9. Alan Tongue
10.
11. Marshall Chalk (did Frawley get used as a second rower too?
12.
13.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Mark McLinden played in the centres and on the wing, not sure if that qualifies. He was a gifted attacking player, but a defensive speed bump.

Pretty sure Trevor Thurling moved to centre during a game to cover injuries, might have been the infamous Campo plays eight minutes before another season ending injury game in 2011.

Our team for the semi final at Shark Park a few years back had some players playing in some weird positions - I think Tonguey may have been in in the halves - to be fair, I think we only had 17 fit players so the positonal changes forced the coaches hand KW

imo brad drew was more of a 7 then mogg.

Although I remember us winning a game with mogg at 7 so how bad could he have gone.

If only we had sheens during the meninga era, you would have vainakolo playing prop and to be fair to the volcano he would have gone ok.

Jason Croker got put in the halves at one stage, when he was more like a prop forward.

Hey but we won 7 straight games with Croker at 6 in 2003. Actually IIRC, that streak ended when Croker was shifted back into the forwards against Melbourne.

Adam Mogg wins this hands down and by a country mile. Most of the others were forced by horrid injury tolls but I believe Mogg was recruited back from England by Super Coach Dave Furner with the sole purpose of playing in the halves :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown .
Thankfully Joel Thompson was injured and he was moved back to the centres where he actually did quite well and we came 6th or something.

We went on our run from that game onwards, but Moggy was centre.

I remember he set up a great try for Vidot.

Monaghan FTS after an length of the field intercept.

Raiders all time out of position XIII

I bought my first Raiders jersey the day of that match. I wore it every game day and as we made that run to the finals I was convinced it had powers.

Then he was moved to centres and tore it up

I remember Campese was named at Centre by Neil Henry one week.

Tonguey was at 5/8.

Although by kick off there was a reshuffle.

Think it was the Broncos 08 match at home?

Its not on line but there's an article in the paper saying Ricky wants Vaughan to learn to play both in the middle and on the edge.

He thinks it's good to learn both with the edge being more difficult to defend and something everyone should learn.

Players having more versatility - no, it can't hurt.
