Pop ups

Post by Shezza »

GE - not sure what the problem is, but thought I'd mention this.

I keep getting dodgy popups when I visit the GH, don't get them from any other site. Things like I've won $1,000 in a random competition I'm not in.

I'm not a computer wiz, so it could very well be me. Just thought I'd let you know in case it was the site.

Don't get it on any of my devices Shezza. You may have a virus/Adware. Sometimes happens when you download software and they add in Adware.

There are certainly some Google Ads which do this... just saw some, but they are paid for ads through the Google Adsense program, and which fund the site. They don't "pop up", they are in designated spaces on the site.

One of those google ads today was for actual greenhouses and other gardening gear. I thought it was funny..

Well this site also has adverts based mainly on your history (hence why I get a lot of gambling related sites up in the top banner) so what does that tell you??

Righto this is getting worse. Now when I visit this site on my computer I get adds for things like B105 blasting through my speakers. It just did it while I was on a Telco.....

Better get a virus scanner sorted.

Anyone know of an online one I can use in the meantime?

Install both AVG and Spybot.

If they don't sort you out, do a complete reformat and start again.

You could also install hitman pro it's a cloud based scanner should pick stuff up. Otherwise malware bytes is also pretty good too.

Good luck and don't be afraid to wipe it and start fresh if it's a major virus (sounds more like adware though) One last thing make sure you uninstall any addons that these programs may have installed in your broswer and revert back to default your search options.
