Giddy up! Iconic Canberra merry-go-round seeks ringmaster

Restoration works, the search for a new permanent operator and two looming anniversaries have thrown a spotlight on Civic's iconic merry-go-round that has delighted generations of Canberra children since 1974.

The carousel will have been in Canberra for 40 years in 2014, the same year it turns 100.

Bought from under the nose of a Victorian consortium in 1973 for only $1000 more than their bid, the remarkable device is second only to Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles as a canny investment for the city. It is also demonstrably more popular.

Water restrictions not yet on the (dusty) horizon

Canberra is a long way off water restrictions even though last week's heatwave and a dry start to the year have the bush capital's gardeners reaching for their hoses.

Up to January 20, the ACT has had only one millimetre of rain, far below average and close to our record low for the month.

Last year, Canberra had 73 millimetres of rain in January and 47mm in 2012. The average for the month is 58mm.

ABC ahead in news race after time shift a turn-off for WIN

ABC is regularly winning the head-to-head battle with WIN in the Canberra television news stakes, with speculation viewers do not want to watch 90 minutes of news.

WIN News was pushed from 6.30pm to 7pm from October 17 last year when Channel Nine started an hour-long broadcast, initially to provide extended coverage of the Blue Mountains bushfires. It has since made the change permanent. It means WIN viewers have to commit from 6pm to 7.30pm to get their fill of local, national and international news. A Current Affair has been shifted over to Gem.

ABC's half-hour 7pm bulletin in Canberra has been on an upward trend since last year, to the point where it is now regularly winning the timeslot. Ratings for the 7pm to 7.30pm timeslot undertaken by Regional TAM and obtained by Fairfax Media show the ABC news has gone from lows of audience shares of less than 10 per cent and under 10,000 viewers a year ago to audience shares as high as above 40 per cent, with close to 40,000 viewers.

''ABC News is now the only television news bulletin produced and presented in Canberra and we remain committed to providing our viewers with a reliable and comprehensive news service covering local, national and international news and we're very grateful for the ongoing loyalty and support,'' an ABC spokesman said.

WIN TV has killed it's local news bulletin. First broadcasting it from Wollongong, and then shifting it to 7pm. And it's actually bad news for the Raiders, given how poor the ABC's coverage of the Raiders is.

ABC generally has better news coverage than Nine anyway. Probably not so much when it comes to sporting news.

Baby rescued from car outside Bunnings

Police may press charges against a father who left his 10-month-old baby in a car in blazing hot temperatures outside a hardware store in Tuggeranong.

The baby girl was left inside the car for up to half an hour, where authorities say it could have reached temperatures of 55 degrees.

She was rescued by members of the public as her father shopped inside the Tuggeranong Bunnings store, after passers-by noticed the baby in the rear of the vehicle crying hysterically.

A rear window had been left slightly down, allowing rescuers to pull the window down further and unlock the door.

Unfortunately it is still pretty common to see this sort of thing despite the warnings. I remember walking through the carpark at Erindale last summer and there was a young girl screaming her head off in the car. I tested the doors and was looking around for something to smash the window when the mother returned to her car. She just said 'I was only gone for a minute' jumped in the car and drove away.

Canberra ranked Australia's most liveable city

Canberra has overtaken Adelaide as Australia's most liveable city.

An annual survey by the Property Council of Australia asked 5,400 people across 10 cities to rate their city on the issues that matter to them.

Canberra edged out Adelaide and Hobart, scoring highly in outdoor recreation, education, and safety.

It is the first time the capital has achieved the top ranking after being runner-up to Adelaide for the past two years.

Can't believe it's Adelaide and Canberra constantly in the top 2. They're practically the same city (except one has beaches).

Magic blooms at Arboretum on first birthday

If trees could talk they would be singing Happy Birthday this weekend as the National Arboretum celebrates its first birthday on Saturday, March 8.

A public family fun day will be held, with a tree planting, treasure hunts and stories in the forest, kite making and decorating, bonsai demonstrations, guided forest tours and terrarium workshops.

Face painting, jumping castles and live music are sure to keep children busy, as well as appealing to the young at heart.

Date

Canberra's centenary year may be well and truly over but this hasn't stopped the capital from keeping the party alive.

Canberra's tallest residential tower to hit market this month

Canberra's tallest residential tower are expected to be snapped up by first home buyers when they hit the market this month.

While Geocon's 88-metre “Wayfarer Apartments” project in Belconnen will be officially released later in March, it is understood an underground sale will begin on Wednesday.

Sales are expected to be strong in the 27-storey development designed by Cox Architecture, which will offer buyers the chance to live higher than anywhere else in the ACT.

Located on the corner of Eastern Valley Way and Aikman Drive, features of the development include a sky-lounge on level 25 and an “infinity” swimming pool on the top two levels - with views of Black Mountain available to all residents living in the 235-apartment tower.

I will be very surprised if these fly off the market. The real estate market and especially the apartment market has been struggling of late.

ACT firefighters make flame while the sun shines

Clouds of smoke have been rising from Black Mountain for two days, as ACT firefighters busily back-burn ahead of heavy rain due to arrive in the territory on Wednesday afternoon.

Canberra is forecast to get up to 50mm of rain over the next week, as a cold front moves across the territory from the west in the next few days.

The hazard reduction burns on Monday and Tuesday were just the beginning of a schedule of burns covering about 5500 hectares across the ACT, with Parks and Conservation fire teams taking advantage of the cooler weather.

Centenary column ticks off some unfinished business for Canberra

Canberrans ticked off some unfinished business dating back 100 years on Tuesday morning when Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, dedicated the Canberra Centenary Column on the slopes of City Hill.

The $200,000, 8.5 metre tall structure contains a time capsule which will provide Canberrans 100 years from now an insight into how the current generation lived, worked and played.

Both Ms Gallagher and territory historian, David Headon, linked the centenary column to the as yet unbuilt "commencement column" envisaged by King O'Malley for the city a century ago.

Parrot down: Pegleg Pete touches down on Gungahlin Drive

It’s no wonder that a parrot with a wooden leg has difficulties with making elegant landings and sure enough Pegleg Pete made an inelegant landing on Gungahlin Drive Expressway on Monday Morning, Canberra Day.

Pegleg Pete, the half-pirate/half pirate’s parrot hot air balloon from Champaign, Illinois, is perhaps the most popular of the balloons in town for the Canberra Balloon Spectacular.

Shannon Bevan and partner Damon Reardon were at the Spectacular’s launch site before dawn on Monday and made a special point, Brown recalled on Tuesday, of watching the fabulous Pete being inflated and then lifting off into the dawn light.

‘‘But after watching Pegleg Pete’s inflation and departure from the Spectacular on Monday, Damon and I were driving home towards Belconnen on the GDE at about a quarter past eight. We were forced to stop suddenly as Pegleg Pete decided to land!’’ Brown said.

Mapping Our World: National Library finds map to exhibition success

Perhaps it was the chance to get close to some of the rarest documents on the planet.

Perhaps it was the fact that a Hollywood movie star opened the show.

Whatever the reason, the National Library’s blockbuster exhibition of maps, which closed on the weekend, was the library’s most successful show ever, bringing 118,264 visitors through the door.

This number surpassed the library’s last record-breaking show in 2001, Treasures from the World’s Great Libraries, which had 115,081 visitors, and legendary queues around the building.

Canberra to host Australia's largest free public wi-fi network

The ACT Government has unveiled plans to roll out Australia's largest free public wireless internet network in Canberra.

The $4.4 million digital action plan for Canberra aims to create a networked 'smart city' and help local businesses deal with the impacts of the Federal Government's predicted public service cuts.

It includes the rollout of free public wi-fi in Canberra's CBD and on ACTION buses from the second half of this year.
