New look for 2008 Greenhouse

Post by greeneyed »

Image

You'll have noticed some reorganisation of the forum this week as we prepare to give The Greenhouse a bit of a new look for season 2008.

Finite is devising a new banner for the site as part of our effort and this is what he's developed so far.

One question is whether people have suggestions for a photo of the team that they'd particularly like to see included (Alan Tongue is presently featured).

Plus any other comments/feedback/suggestions/proposals are all welcome.

We've put this in the Raiders board, as it is most widely read... but we'll move it to Greenhouse Issues at an appropriate point.

No! Tonguey is the heart and soul of the Raiders, and he deserves to be there by himself.

Don't know how these would work... but these are some good shots, IMO.

Animation of the players would be brilliant IMO, but not sure if Finite is able to do it or not.

That would be brilliant... so some old shots eg the 1994 Grand Final to give some history in the Centenary Year and some shots of current players would be great.

I would love to see animation from the first team shot to this year's team shot and a few pics in between but I know this is probably going to be difficult. The stuff that has been done looks great though. Top stuff!!!

Great stuff Finite.

My suggestion is flashing between the past, present and future on rotation.

Some really good stuff there, Finite.

In terms of pics, what about that one of Zillman with all the blood on his face?

I guess it's a symbolic type of picture.

You may like to use this one:

It looks pretty good. Just one suggestion ; with the web address text "www.gh.com.au" - maybe make it stand out a bit more... perhaps using club colours like blue, yellow, and/or green? You could even have those colours "transitioning" through the text from left to right, if you follow me, and then going back to grey. Would look awesome IMO.

Finite, that animated pic is magic. Can you tell me what program you used to create it and roughly what it costs?

As for suggestions, I like the idea about past and present pics, but I would create separate images which have a random-load script running them. I.e. past banner with Mal, Daley etc and a present one with Tonguey, Zilly and the likes. My next suggestion might be difficult, but I think not seeing how good the animated one looks. It involves the original banner (not animated) being changed with a vertical line that runs from left to right changing from one banner to the next as it progresses.

I'd also like to see some snippets like "Raiders 38 v Dogs 34, Bruce Stadium, 2002." Maybe also bits like record holders (most tries in a game/year), stadium capacity, finishing position in any given year, representative players for any given year and now I'm out of ideas.

greeneyed, you know my feelings as to the design of the place needing a bit of a clean up as far as edges goes.

Man, those are awesome pictures! Always remember how Ricky carefully watched each kick he made. And no wonder Nadruku broke his arm!

I reckon this is the best photograph of a Raider I can ever remember... not a football action shot, but capturing that moment is very talented photography.

Also... I've just about no photos of Laurie Daley and many of the older players...

Already with 2 images, this is at 375k - for people on limited downloads, this is going to chew through things very quickly.

I appreciate that animations are all the rage these days, but could something be done to limit the filesize of images? A better level of compression perhaps?

Once downloaded once... that's it isn't it?... doesn't it revert to the temporary image already downloaded when you re-visit the site?

Can't you get a program to convert it to Flash?

The only request I have is that I dont have to log in every time I come here.

Even tho I tick "remember me" the GH doesnt :(

Everyone's against me.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

It could be something to do with your browser, I would think. What browser are you running?

It is already compressed from 1.2mb to 375kb if i go any further the transitions will look poor. I can stilll do some things that will cut down the file size im hoping.
Can't you get a program to convert it to Flash?
Yes but that wont decrease the file size all that much and it adds the complication of the host requiring Flash support.
Once downloaded once... that's it isn't it?... doesn't it revert to the temporary image already downloaded when you re-visit the site?
Yes it does

++++++++

I would hope that most people could afford a 400kb one off download. You download more than that everytime you visit the SMH website.
