How to produce your own avatar

At The Greenhouse, avatars must be 150 pixels wide or less. There is no particular limit on the height of an avatar.

If there is an image you want to use as an avatar, but it is too large you will need to re-size it. You can check the size of an image by right clicking on it, and then clicking "Properties".

There are many sites on the net which can re-size an image if you don't have your own software with that function. You just need to google "re-size images for free".

You will then need a site to host the image. There are a number on the net which will do that free, such as http://www.photobucket.com.

One site... http://www.imageshack.us ... will both resize and host your avatar in one step. Save the image you want to use on your computer... Then click the "Browse" icon at http://www.imageshack.us. That will throw open a dialogue box. Choose the image file on your own computer that you wish to upload. Select "Open"... Then on imageshack... tick "resize image" and select the "150x112 thumbnail" option. Then click the "Host it" icon.

Once it uploads, copy the "Direct link to image" URL.

Then on The Greenhouse site, you can click on the "Profile" icon... and paste that URL into the box beside: "Link to off-site Avatar"... and then click the "Submit" icon.

You should then have a regulation sized avatar for The Greenhouse.

Signature banners are also limited to 500 pixels in width. There is no particular limit to the height of signature banners. You can use these instructions to make regulation sized banners also.

There is also a wide selection of ready made avatars and banners on the Welcome to the Greenhouse thread:
