Watch the game again GE, Chalk was everywhere, making tackles busting tackles, running hard. Hopefully more of the same this week against Penrith. Hopefully attempting to cement a starting 2nd row spot and shake the 'utility' tag will see him put in another strong effort.greeneyed wrote:I'm still scratching my head about how Chalk got points... and outpointed Carney! I also feel sorry for Purtell!
P.s Carney was great when he had the ball but he didn't get enough of it.

He seems do this a lot (wait for the ball at second receiver), which I think contributes a lot to why people think he's a 6 not a 7. Can anyone remember if he actually organised the lower grades sides well, or did he just carve it up because he was a better player?bleeding green wrote:It's up to Carney to go and get the ball. Being a half he is supposed direct the team, not let others dictate the games and wait for them to pass to him. I hope he starts to show better leadership soon.

I play footy so I get what you mean, but why then was he so quiet in the first half? Are you saying he didn't want the ball? Easing himself back into maybe?bleeding green wrote:It's up to Carney to go and get the ball. He seemed to get better as the game went on. Man he looked sharp with ball in hand in the second half. Lets hope he picks up where he left off.
Is it just me or does anyone else think he and campo aren't exactly best friends? I always get a hint of animosity between those two. Almost trying to pull the team in different directions rather than working together.
Looking at the stats, I'll stick with my puzzlement.

The stats don't look that good by the standards of the backs either.Lime Green wrote:He played most of the match in the centres/wing so why would you compare him to the forwards?
As soon as Zilly was off Chalk was back in the backline.
If we are judging him there... compare him to Purtell 2 tries... 13 hit ups... 97 metres gained... More tackles from Graham and Monaghan...

Graham and Monaghan played in the centres so you'd expect them to make more tackles...I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Chalk was playing on the wing.greeneyed wrote:The stats don't look that good by the standards of the backs either.Lime Green wrote:He played most of the match in the centres/wing so why would you compare him to the forwards?

You make a fair point about Purtell...however I believe the good things he did in attack must be balanced against his fairly woeful defense. Within the first 30 seconds of the game he was caught out of position.
He and Monaghan were the markers in the previous tackle before McDougall ran around the defence, it was actually Purtell who dived on him after he slipped over. I beleive Turner was the one who missed the tackle although he was defending a lot further infeild. I think Zillman should have been over there to cover too.Lime Green wrote:Graham and Monaghan played in the centres so you'd expect them to make more tackles...I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Chalk was playing on the wing.greeneyed wrote:The stats don't look that good by the standards of the backs either.Lime Green wrote:He played most of the match in the centres/wing so why would you compare him to the forwards?

I don't think Chalk even got to touch the ball once he was shifted to the backs.
I still think our defence was good and IMO, credit has to go to Tongue, Turner and Miller ion that regard.
Best being diabolical at fullback pretty much cost us all of the points conceded in the second half.

well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
I think Best was having a sook becasue he got put back on the wing. I think he was hoping for a Centre position. If he plays another game like he did the last one (not that the ball was spread that far) i think Bronx needs to come back. I know Bronx is not our best wing option but i think he's gagging for a chance to proove himself and it might put a rocket up Best.julian87 wrote:I don't think Chalk even got to touch the ball once he was shifted to the backs.

Why was Purtell off his wing and in the middle of the park? He does that a lot. Turner was forced to cover for Purts out wide and didn't do a very good job.EdgeC wrote:He and Monaghan were the markers in the previous tackle before McDougall ran around the defence, it was actually Purtell who dived on him after he slipped over. They went wide because they saw that Purts was off his wing, simple as that...
Zillman was the one who made the tackle of McDougall in the end.

It wasn't that far infeild but they were definatley the tacklers and yes Purtell does come off his wing a lot. But TBH Bronx, Milne and Kelly all do the same thing. Inexperience? To eager?
I don't know but if you've got speed out wide and an oppostiong winger who is constantly coming off his wing its a free pass to the try line.
But then with the Vuna try Purtell stayed out and got turned around? I think he just needs some more experience and that will come with game time.

Yeah I agree with all that. Purts is very enthusiastic, and a natural centre, so he likes to get involved both in defense and running the ball up.EdgeC wrote:It wasn't that far infeild but they were definatley the tacklers and yes Purtell does come off his wing a lot. He's still very young, in a couple of seasons I think he'll have that stuff sorted out.

i dont know what game some of you watched on the weekend.
im a massive alan tongue fan, but even im not so blind as to see he didnt have a great game on saturday. most of the forwards were ordinary. really.
lincoln withers was the best on ground i say. despite a few forward passes which were oh so fristrating. man of the match for sure..
and there's the fact i had $5 on him for first try scorer!! haha oh yeah. that was the only good part about the whole game for me.
