2021 in review - Corey Horsburgh

Image

Now it is season over for the Canberra Raiders, we will be reviewing the year of all 31 players who pulled on a green jersey in first grade in 2021. So far, we have looked at the season of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Xavier Savage, Caleb Aekins, Jordan Rapana, Bailey Simonsson, Semi Valemei, Harley Smith-Shields, Sebastian Kris, Jarrod Croker, Curtis Scott, Matt Timoko, Jack Wighton, Sam Williams, George Williams, Matt Frawley, Josh Papalii, Joseph Tapine, Emre Guler, Sia Soliola, Ryan James, Dunamis Lui, Josh Hodgson, Tom Starling, Elliott Whitehead, Hudson Young, Corey Harawira-Naera and Ryan Sutton.

Corey Horsburgh had an impressive debut season in 2019, sharing the Raiders Rookie of the Year award on Meninga Medal night with Bailey Simonsson. He made a good start to 2020, but unfortunately his season was cut short early - after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his foot in the Round 7 golden point loss to the Eels. It was initially thought he might be able to return before the end of the year, but that did not prove to be the case. He played only six games.

The injury significantly affected his 2021 preseason, but his preparations didn't go smoothly in another way. A Christmas Day road side breath test saw him charged with low range drink driving. He was subsequently banned by the NRL for the first game of 2021 and handed a suspended $5,000 fine. Coach Ricky Stuart was not impressed. He started his season in NSW Cup, playing four games for the Raiders' lower grade outfit. He scored a couple of tries and averaged 149 running metres and 33 tackles per match. The strong performance - and a build up in match fitness - saw him promoted to the NRL squad for the Round 7 clash with the Cowboys.

However, Horsburgh ended up making only eight appearances for the Raiders. All were off the bench. He dislocated his wrist in the Round 12 loss to the Roosters - and that put him back on the sidelines for a couple of months. He returned to first grade football in Round 22, when he was loaned to the Bulldogs for two games - with the aim being to boost his match fitness. He then played the final two rounds of the season for Canberra.

I rated him an average of 5.5/10 for his games for Canberra (compared with 6.7 in 2020). He was awarded a "6" in six matches, with his best performance probably coming in Round 12 against the Roosters. He scored his only try of the season in that game. His best running metres (137) came in the Round 9 loss to the Knights, while he produced his top tackle tally (40) in the previous week against the Rabbitohs.

It is difficult to make too much of his statistics, due to the low number of matches he played. He ranked sixth among the Raiders forwards for average running metres (85, compared with 94 in 2020). He's not the sort of player who makes a lot of tackle breaks or line breaks, but he ranked second at the club for average offloads per game. He averaged 22 tackles per game (32 in 2020), ranking 10th among the Raiders forwards. At the same time, his tackle efficiency rate fell to 91 per cent (from 93 per cent in 2020).

Horsburgh is still aged just 23, and that is young for a middle forward. It is a shame that we have seen so little of him on the field in the past two years. A lack of football has affected his development and his fitness. He had another setback following the end of this season - a shoulder reconstruction in September. He should be back in contact training after Christmas and fit for Round 1. But the need for surgery and more recovery work would have been a blow. His contract with the Raiders expires at the end of 2022. He'll want to impress on the field next year - either to earn an extension with the Raiders or a contract at a new club. There has been some speculation in the media that the Queenslander might be a target for the new franchise, "The Dolphins". Hopefully Horsburgh can show his best in 2022 and that his new deal is with the Raiders - because he has real potential.

Yeah 4/10. Make or break for Hors next year.

Hola, Mooney, Rushton all could be pushing him and Guler for a spot. Assuming 8 Papa 10 Sutton 11 Young/Whitehed 12 CHN 13 Young/Whitehead 14 hooker or outside back 15 Tapine 16 ? 17 ? With Guler that's 5 guys pushing for 2 spots. With probably another signing in the edge/middle mould we've been looking at (Peach and Elliot) to come.

I have been one of HorsPowers biggest fans, but in 2021 he lost his way to everywhere but to the buffet. In 2020 he first hurt his knee then had the Lisfranc foot injury which put his pre-season behind the 8 ball. I understand that his injuries in 2021 (dislocated wrist first and then his shoulder) put him behind on his training schedule, but he would have access to the Club doctors, physio's and dieticians who either couldn't provide a workable weight plan for him or he ignored it. The sad thing for me is, we had a poor season but loaned him to the Dogs rather than pick him in FG. He has some good offload skills which should make him ideal for Vlandysball.

If he doesn't get picked for the Raiders in 2022 then I think, as a former Redcliffe Dolphins player, he will look to go there in 2023.

The bloke is EDIT. He seriously has no muscle definition, it’s like he’s never set foot in a gym. Error prone.

People rave about his “offloading ability” which from what Ive seen is just him dumping an ill-timed pass onto ground with 4 defenders on him resulting in a knock on 95% of the time.

His repeated errors in the Warriors game when we were desperately trying to win the game was atrocious.

Not a fan, would be happy to see him go to be honest.

Was clearly hampered by the foot injury from last yr. Never got better either. His best games were probably as a Dog.

4 might be too high TBH.

Has the ability to play Origin, but can he regain that form??? We will see.
