2021 Dally M Awards

Post by greeneyed »

2021 Dally M Awards

For the first time in history, the Dally M Awards will be held over two special events which will culminate in an awards ceremony in Brisbane on Monday 27 September.

Broadcast partner Fox Sports will host a made for television event on Monday 20 September which will crown a number of award winners before the Dally M Medal will be announced at a gala ceremony at Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane a week later.

The first television event will provide a greater spotlight on the supporting awards that are traditionally crowned on Dally M night and build excitement towards the Dally M Medal count a week later.

NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said the two events would provide the game with a unique opportunity to celebrate the best performances in 2021.

“The Dally M Awards showcase the exceptional performances of the season and this year we can celebrate the achievements of our players and officials across two events,’’ he said.

“With the entire competition relocated to Queensland in 2021, it was important to think differently for our awards this year.

“We have a new format and the first ever Dally M event in Queensland, ahead of the first ever Grand Final in Brisbane.

“The new format will allow some players and guests in Brisbane to experience the gala evening in person while Fox Sports will ensure a state-of-the art experience for players and officials who have returned home.”

The second event, on Monday, September 27, will feature the major award winners including the Dally M Medal, the Dally M Team of the Year, Coach, Captain and Rookie of the Year.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said hosting the Dally M Awards in Brisbane was a great coup for Queensland.

“Thousands of viewers tune in to the Dally Ms each and every year. Hosting these awards here in Brisbane will generate great exposure for Queensland,’’ she said.

“This is only possible thanks to the way Queenslanders have responded to the pandemic.

“We’ll continue to work hard to secure major events that support local jobs and help businesses to build back better.”

Fox Sports Executive Director Steve Crawley said he was looking forward to innovative format.

“We can’t wait to highlight the incredible performances of the players this season and the new format will better help us tell the stories of the game’s best,” he said.

Following the success of the concept in 2020, the NRL will once again name a full team in the Dally M Team of the Year, from one through to 13.

NRL 360 will also host special Dally M editions prior to each broadcast.

If Tommy Turbo wins the Dally M, he still won't be as good as Wighton, because Wighton also has a Clive Churchill Medal 😀

Does anyone know if this is the first year that no one from our club is even nominated in the top 5 for any award ? I recall Joey won the best centre in 2018 when we missed the finals. But this year we really sucked.

Tom Trbojevic wins Dally M Medal

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles fullback Tom Trbojevic has capped a spectacular 2021 season by being crowned the 2021 Dally M Medal winner in Brisbane.

In a ceremony held in Brisbane for the first time ever, Trbojevic became the first Sea Eagles player to win the coveted award since Matt Orford won in 2008.

The Sea Eagles star polled 35 points, ahead of Penrith Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary (30), and Cody Walker (29). Trbojevic’s teammate Daly Cherry-Evans and Sydney Roosters fullback James Tedesco (both 23) rounded out the top five.

Trbojevic’s ascension to the medal was complete in Round 24, when he polled three points against the Bulldogs. Remarkably, he polled three points in 11 matches in 2021.

This year’s Dally M Awards once again featured a full 13-man team as its Team of the Year.

Grand finalists Penrith Panthers dominated the Team of the Year, with six members crowned – prop James Fisher-Harris, second-rower Viliame Kikau, lock Isaah Yeo, winger Brian To’o and centre Matt Burton joining Cleary at halfback.

Melbourne Storm’s remarkable season was celebrated with a number of landmark achievements - Craig Bellamy won Dally M Coach of the Year, while the 19-match winning streak – which equalled the efforts of the 1975 Roosters team – was named the Peter Frilingos Headline Moment, alongside Justin Olam (Centre of the Year) and Brandon Smith (Hooker of the Year).

Retiring Sydney Roosters centre Josh Morris was given the honour of winning the Provan-Summons Medal – the Spirit of the Game award – after the emotional embrace with his twin brother Brett following Brett’s season-ending injury in Round 8.

Sydney Roosters fullback James Tedesco was awarded Captain of the Year, while teammate Sam Walker was rewarded for a stellar season with Rookie of the Year honours.

“On behalf of the game, congratulations to Tom Trbojevic on winning rugby league’s highest individual honour,’’ NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said.

“It’s a remarkable achievement in a remarkable year to poll 3 points in 11 different games.

“Congratulations to every winner. Tonight we reflected on the people and moments of the season. The players. The coaches. The teamwork. The deep tribalism. The unmatched athleticism. The unforgettable moments of brilliance.”

The full list of winners is:

Dally M Player of the Year – Tom Trbojevic – Manly Sea Eagles

Team of the Year
Prop – Payne Haas – Brisbane Broncos and James Fisher-Harris – Penrith Panthers
Second Row – Viliame Kikau – Penrith Panthers and Isaiah Papali’i – Parramatta Eels
