Canberra Raiders miss signing Tyrone Peachey

Canberra Raiders consider signing Tyrone Peachey

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is considering signing former Gold Coast utility Tyrone Peachey.

"Yes, Tyrone is one player that we have discussed," Stuart told The Canberra Times. "Not as a half, but as a new buy. He's one of a number of names that we're looking at at the moment.

He was on $500k on his last deal and he knows he's not getting more so you'd probably get him in for $250-300k which is great value. I don't see why not. At best, he could be a regular in the 17, at worst, he's a great utility that can do a job in several positions if injury strikes.

I'm not a fan. For all his individual skills he's not a great team player. Overplays his hand far too often and confuses his own players more than the opposition. He had a couple of good seasons with the Panthers as an impact player off the bench. Other than that he's been more rocks than diamonds. 3 seasons with the Titans and struggled to find a permanent role and it's not like his career is on an upward trajectory.

I agree with this and would be dead against signing him anywhere near his last contract value. But you would bring him in as a utility mainly for cover... not as a starting player.

Our bar is pretty low. We just need a better lock than Ryan Sutton

Look at it this way, at least we are looking at Vlandysball players. He is a guy that can create points. He also adds a heap of versatility to a team, can play 9, anywhere in the backrow, centre and half.
Im not totally sure where I sit on this one, as he is a 'jack of all trades, master of none', BUT, like Ash Taylor, at low $$$ (sub 300k) its not the worst buy in the world.

If he's minimum contract or a NSW Cup contract, can't hurt I guess.

Would be a big fan of this. Slot him into the bench utility player, he's good cover. Would suit being a 13 for a period of a game. As long as we don't overpay

Ok for that provided his contract value is reflects his role.

Perfect fit as a bench utility now that Havalii has left (and assuming Hodgo gets moved on)

That doesn't mean he's going to play for a pie and a Coke.

I reckon he'd be looking more for 350-400k.

If you've watched him play and think he's a minimum contract or NSW cup level player, then i can't take anything else you've got to say about RL seriously.

Yeah it shows some thinking has been done. Points to a more attacking style in recognising the role of a lock is not a 3rd prop anymore. Adds another ballplayer/creative player to the mix and makes us a lot more mobile in the middle. That can help our attack if we offload and he's sniffing around + mobility laterally helps us defend those fullbacks cutting back up the middle.

He had his best NRL year this season so I think he's improved a bit as an NRL player + the rules have shifted to suit him.

Lock or bench utility he has some value. Would also mean we can bring a young forward up and play Peachey at half instead of Williams/Frawley if there's a halves injury for a period.

Prepare for the “not good enough” for the Raiders comments..

Ironic, considering we couldn’t make the 8 with the worlds best forward pack and squad as currently constructed and coached…

I'm sure they're coming but this might be a case of- yes he's not a top drawer talent (and that's fine if the pay reflects that) but he is pretty effective and what he does bring to a team is exactly what we lack. That being ball players, mobility in the middle, an upgrade in speed, some creativity. So the sum gain might be more than the part added, if I torture a metaphor.

Even if this doesn’t come off it’s encouraging. We’re finally chasing a player that suits the style that the game has changed to. I’d love him in the 13 jumper.

Agree with you.
Anything that moves us away from the nauseating bore fest style we’ve played the last 2 seasons is welcome.

Peachey to fill that 14 role, together with signing a CHT or Cust would make me feel a little better for next season.

1. Savage
2. HSS
3. CNK
4. Timoko
5. Rapana
6. Wighton
7. CHT/Cust
8. Papalii
9. Starling
10. Tapine
11. Young
12. CHN
13. Whitehead

14. Peachey
15. Kris
16. Sutton
17. Mooney

18. Guler
19. Horsburgh
20. Simonsson
21. Schneider

OK, so I'm exaggerating. But according to this:

https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/gold- ... 0aa517cb3c

he was on half a million a season at the Titans. He's just been released, and almost half his games in 2021 were off the bench. He was well overpaid. Minimum is $120k in 2021. I wouldn't want to see the Raiders tie up a whole lot of cap space with a deal for Peachey, when the Raiders are only looking at him as a utility... when we need good cap space for a real halfback.

250k to 300k is nrl average, he's a talented guy who has played origin footy.

No one is advocating signing him on the money he was on at the titoons but if you got peachey to play lock for 300k, that's going to be imo, a good and productive player for that price, and someone who i think could help us better adjust to V'Landysball

If we can get those three on the field at the same time, it's be unorthodox and would require some coaching, but we shouldn't want for attack. We'll look clunky at times but there should be points in there, somewhere

It's not as ideal as having a genuine organising 7 but there are none available anyway

Some club will happily pay him well above minimum either here or ESL, but that average player $250k sounds a reasonable range for the Raiders.

I wouldn’t sign Peachy if Hodgson is expected to play a similar roving role with Starling at Hooker.

Who beat us 44-6 at home and made the 8. Definitely a team on the up and Holbrook's coaching, is better and more astute than Ricky's.

And I am a bit puzzled by fans on this forum who advocate for resigning Frawley to boost our NSW Cup stocks but are not in favour of signing Peachey at the right price.
