Is this the end of the bad boy?

Post by cat »

There is a long list of traditional nrl bad boys, including a few old Raiders boys who are clubless for next season including Dugan, Fergo, Vaughan, Napa, Norman, Scott etc all looking for new clubs next season with their current clubs wanting them gone.

Are they not getting gigs because they are older OR because clubs see players like that a liability they can't afford?

Short answer no.
Most of them are clubless because their form has dropped for long periods. Vaughan because his stupidity just happened. He'll get a gig.

Vaughn isn't getting a gig because he is a **** and **** up on an epic scale, costing his club and the NRL potentially millions of dollars.

The rest of them are not getting gigs because they are simply just not very good at Rugby League anymore, esepcially for what they're currently being paid.

I was thinking about how people go on about how Melbourne don’t release dud players etc and you should be asking questions if Melbourne lets someone go. Have to say we have a good track record of moving on tools. If I was recruitment at another club I’d be looking long at hard at anyone we shop around. In fairness to Donny, he has moved on some donkeys from the club that have gone on to cause mayhem elsewhere.

This is rugbah league - there will always be bad boys! There is however, a much smaller tendency to keep them on in your club once their true colours are revealed.

Bad boys who can play get chances.

If you are a bad boy who is also past your use by date you don’t. That is especially the case if you are a bad boy, who is past your use by date AND you are on a contract far above your current worth.

Vaughan will find another club. He will just get paid a lot less.

Yes, sponsors money is more valuable to a club.

Bad boys who are good players will always get chances. Roosters signed bad boys Carney and Ferguson after we sacked them and Nick Politis and Roosters always brag about their culture.

Wayne Bennett loved rehabilitating bad boys (Lodge as an example). De Belin had an offer from Warriors and St George while awaiting trial. Tyrone May was in demand.

Some NRL clubs will still take Folau even after his instagram posts.

We signed CHN after his episode.

West Tigers will wait outside the jail Jarryd Hayne is staying in on the eve of his release with a 5 year contract.

But if you are a bad boy and **** player, then that's it.

I thought Cronk on 360 had some good insight on this. He was saying a player like Vaughan will get picked up by a lower tier team, but not one fighting for a premiership.

Premiership teams have a huge reliance on trusting everyone in the squad. He wouldn’t want to line up with Paul, because he’d have a niggle in the back of his mind that he couldn’t be trusted.

Whereas a team in the bottom half, who consider scraping into the 8’s a success, would pick him up to help them progress.

Talented “bad boys” will always be around, because there’ll be a coach who thinks they’ll be the one to turn them around.

C'mon let's be real. There will always be bad boys in rugby. It is a totally bogan sport, played by bogans and that's part of the appeal.

I think there will be desperate clubs who may roll the dice but clubs do seem to be a bit cautious at the moment.

Bj has been told he isnt needed at the tigers next season and has no new club, Adam Elliott wanted more money and a new club last year but came up short.

As i said before Dugan, fergo, Vaughan, Tevita, Scott, Napa , Norman all without clubs or even bites

IF it is the end for most of the bad guys isnt a bad thing..

BJ is horribly out of form and shape
Adam Elliott is a reserve grader
Dugan and Ferguson are at the end of their careers and physically wrecked
Vaughan will get snapped up in a few weeks
TPJ has a very good offer on the table
Scott has been terrible with us
Napa has been terrible at the dogs
Norman on big dollars at dragons hasn't lived up to his price tag and at 30yo is basically done

These guys aren't getting any chances due to form/ability, if they were playing well clubs would grab them.

Victor Radley, Katoni Staggs, TPJ, Payne Haas etc. The guys on your list are mostly washed up, the bad boy is here to stay.
