The Canberra Raiders head to Gosford for a clash with their 2019 Grand Final rivals, the Sydney Roosters.
Last round: 2021 Round 11. Melbourne Storm 34 - Canberra Raiders 10. Another second half fade from the Raiders. Another sorry loss. The Raiders scored two exciting tries from kicks in the opening quarter hour, among the best of the year from the Green Machine. They then did not score another point. The Storm scored two tries in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 12-10 lead to the break - and went on to score a total of 34 unanswered points.
More on Round 11: As I saw it
Team news: Half George Williams has been released immediately by the Raiders after he declined to attend training and play this weekend. Sam Williams takes over at No. 7, with Jack Wighton coming back into the team at five eighth, after serving a suspension. Josh Hodgson also returns from suspension on the bench, with Tom Starling named at No. 9, despite concerns about an ankle injury. Jordan Rapana (hamstring) comes back into the team on the wing, replacing Semi Valemei (hamstring). Hudson Young has been dropped to the reserves list, with Sia Soliola coming in on the bench.
The Roosters will be without Victor Radley for this match, due to a five week suspension. He has been replaced by Isaac Liu. Angus Crichton was named in the team on Tuesday afternoon, but the judiciary suspended him for two weeks on Tuesday night. Siosiua Taukeiaho moves into the starting team at prop, while Daniel Suluka Fifita joins the bench. John Morris (back) returns at centre, with Joseph Suaalii dropping back to the reserves.
Late changes: The Raiders omitted Harry Rushton and Brad Schneider from their squad on Friday evening, with Hudson Young and Elijah Anderson remaining on the extended bench. The Roosters have replaced a suspended Angus Crichton with Nat Butcher in the second row, while Tuku Hau Tapuha moves onto the bench. Naufahu Whyte was cut from the Roosters squad, while Egan Butcher and Joseph Suaalii were retained on the reserves list.
History: The Raiders have won 30 of 67 matches against the Sydney Roosters - and five of the past 10 games. The Roosters won all three games played between the clubs in 2019, including the Grand Final. They won 30-24 at Lang Park during Magic Round, after going to a 30-6 lead early in the second half. The Raiders' subsequent comeback fell short. Then in Round 21, Canberra suffered a narrow, 22-18, loss to the Roosters at Canberra Stadium - with the Raiders' comeback again just falling short. The Raiders lost 14-8 in the Grand Final. It was a game marred by officiating controversy, with the Green Machine being the better team for much of the contest.
In Round 10 last year, the Raiders won the Grand Final re-match, 24-20, in a courageous performance at the Sydney Cricket Ground. However, the Roosters got the win (18-6) in Round 17 as Canberra Stadium. In Week 2 of the 2020 finals, the Green Machine denied the Roosters the opportunity to win a third premiership in a row. They defeated the Sydney outfit, 22-18, at the Sydney Cricket Ground - getting some small measure of revenge for the 2019 decider.
2020 Finals Week 2 Canberra Raiders V Sydney Roosters
2020 Round 17 Canberra Raiders V Sydney Roosters
2020 Round 10 Canberra Raiders V Sydney Roosters
The two teams have played once before at Central Coast Stadium, with the Roosters running out 30-16 winners back in 2005. Marshall Chalk, David Howell and Lincoln Withers scored tries that day for the Raiders, while Matt Gafa potted two goals. Former Raider Joel Monaghan and current Raider Sia Soliola both scored tries for the Roosters. The Roosters coach that day was Ricky Stuart - and former Raiders Brett Finch and Jamie Soward also played for the tricolours.
Form: Raiders: LLLWL
Roosters: WWLWL
The Roosters are coming off an unexpected 34-16 loss to the Brisbane Broncos at the Sydney Cricket Ground. They have also suffered a recent loss to the Eels in Round 9 (31-18). In fact, they haven't beaten any of the teams in the top four this year - also losing to the Rabbitohs (26-16) in Round 3 and the Storm (20-4) in Round 6. Their recent wins have come over the Cowboys (30-16), Knights (38-4) and Dragons (34-10).
The Raiders have had one win in their past seven games - a two point victory over the last placed Bulldogs. The Raiders have "lost the second half" in every one of those games, scoring just 20 points and conceding 133.
Betting: The Roosters are $1.25 favourites, while the Raiders are paying $4.00. The Raiders have a 11.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders odds have lengthened since the market opened.
Stat attack: The Roosters rank third in the competition for tries scored, while the Raiders are now in the bottom four teams in attack. Canberra ranks 13th for tries scored and running metres gained. The Raiders and Roosters rank equal second for most errors - and only the Sea Eagles have a worse completion rate than the Raiders. The Roosters aren't far off in terms of completions, but they're a team that is prepared to take risks and that results in points. The Raiders are very conservative in attack, ranking second for one pass hit ups. It's clearly not helping their error count - and it is putting pressure on their defence.
2021 Season record: Raiders 4 and 7 (11th, -58)
Roosters 7 and 4 (5th, +119)
Attack: Raiders 19 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 13th on tries scored
Roosters 27 points and 5 tries scored per match, ranked 3rd on tries scored
Defence: Raiders 24 points and 4 tries conceded per match, ranked equal 7th on fewest tries conceded
Roosters 17 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 4th on fewest tries conceded
Possession: Raiders 48 per cent, Roosters 49 per cent
Completion rate: Raiders 75 per cent, Roosters 77 per cent
Running: Raiders 1557 running metres from 177 runs (11 dummy half runs), 160 kick return metres, 562 post contact metres per match
Roosters 1655 running metres from 177 runs (7 dummy half runs), 181 kick return metres, 547 post contact metres per match

Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 4, Roosters 4 per match
Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 5, Roosters 4 per match
Key match-ups:
Curtis Scott and Josh Morris: Curtis Scott produced one of his best performances in green last week, and was a critical player in setting up the Raiders' two tries. Roosters centre Josh Morris is now a 34 year old veteran, but he's not showing any signs of slowing down. Overall, Morris has the better numbers so far in 2021, but it should be a good contest between a young buck and an old buck.
Jack Wighton and Lachlan Lam: Jack Wighton is back after a week's suspension. His form has been a bit down this year and he'll be wanting to impress the New South Wales selectors in this one. His opponent isn't Luke Keary, who is out for the season with an ACL injury. He lines up against Lachlan Lam - who has only five appearances in 2021. Jack Wighton easily takes this "skin".
Sam Williams and Sam Walker: Sam Walker is the latest wunderkind, and he's living up to all the hype. The son of former Broncos player, Ben Walker, Sam is still just 18 years old. The Queensland junior representative - and Australian Schoolboy - spent his youth playing football in Ipswich, before being recruited by the Roosters in 2019. He didn't play a game in 2020, but he's sure made the rugby league world take notice in 2021. The Raiders will really have to run at the youngster and try and shut him down when he has the ball in hand. With the release of George Williams, Sam Williams will now line up against Walker. He played well last weekend - but in looking at the numbers, remember that was his first NRL appearance this year.
Emre Guler and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves: This is another match up between a young buck and an old buck. Raiders prop Emre Guler started the year in NSW Cup, because he did not have a full preseason. He's taken a bit of time to build match fitness as a result. He has six NRL appearances so far. His Roosters counterpart, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was born almost a decade before Guler - and the 32 year old is one of the toughest props in the competition. Overall, however, there's not much between the numbers for these two, on average. It should be a good battle.
My tip: I seem to say this almost every week, but here it goes again. The Roosters are deserved, warm favourites. All the numbers point to a Roosters win. The form lines are not exactly great for the Roosters, but their form, overall, is certainly better than the Raiders. The Roosters have big injury problems, but they're dealing with those pretty well. I can only hope for a "little bit of history repeating". Last year the Raiders lost to the Storm, and then produced a backs to the wall victory against the Roosters at the SCG in the following week - despite a massive injury toll for the Green Machine. But head rules the heart in this tip: Roosters by 13+
What they're saying:
Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart: "It’s definitely not that [injuries and suspensions]. I’m not going to look at that as an excuse. It’s not attitude. Next week. Another tough one next week."

Heard somewhere that Sam Walker is being rested due to the ongoing shoulder injury, think it was on the NRL Physio Facebook page. Has it been confirmed?

No, but there’s a DT story suggesting it may happen with Suaalii coming in at centre.

Hoping sammy plays well the new rules suit smaller players and he's a good organiser he might suit the team better than George regardless of everything else

Don't think I've been this less excited for a game since the dark days of 2013/14
Re: 2021 Rd 12 V Roosters: Game Day
just the specifics of George's game that stick wasn't happy with, a bit about how papa and hodgo were allowed to run/pick the forwards but early season form meant stick took that back and it shifted the dynamic

I really hope we can pull something out of the fire tonight. Or, at the very least, make a reasonable account of ourselves.
Interesting stat regarding the number of 13+ wins heading into round 12 over the past four years:
2018 - 35
2019 - 40
2020 - 41
2021 - 52 (plus 3 out of the 4 games played this round).
Not really sure what V'landys and Co.'s endgame is here. Rule changes must be having an impact. What further impact is expansion likely to have? It will just be more fodder for the top teams.

Either Hodgson or Wighton really needs to take control of this game. If they are ever going to play for 80 minutes it’s this game - probably their biggest rivalry
Re: 2021 Rd 12 V Roosters: Game Day
yeah foxtel just confirmed Sam Walker not playing (unless they get the HIA bonus...)

Re: 2021 Rd 12 V Roosters: Game Day
would love to see this:
1. Caleb pull off at try saving tackle
2. Simmo to break a tackle or make a run of 50+ metres
3. CHN doesnt give away a dumb penalty.

My Foxtel started playing up midway through the Eels/Rabbits game, so Raiders will almost certainly win.

Re: 2021 Rd 12 V Roosters: Game Day
This game will tell us a lot about the mindset of the squad. Hodgo, Wighton and Rapana back we have a team good enough to win. Roosters with more players missing than us.

Our bench is much better but our team sucks for some reason.

Teams are in final stages of preparation in the sheds. NRL Indigenous Round ceremony about to start. The Raiders are out in the tunnel, the Roosters are not. The two teams are supposed to walk out together. Now the Roosters arrive.
Very low crowd, there are a few bays full on the halfway on the eastern side.
Now the Welcome to Country.

The NRL Indigenous ceremony did not last long. The teams didn't seem to know it was over for some time.
Here we go! Raiders kick off!

Roosters decoys shouldn't be running the same line as the ball carrier. No penalty.
2nd min PENALTY RAIDERS Roosters inside the 10 metres from the kick.
