NRL gives Ricky Stuart a warning over press conference

NRL investigating Stuart over press conference

The NRL has launched an investigation to determine whether Canberra coach Ricky Stuart will be fined for using profane language in his post-match press conference over the weekend.

After a journalist asked whether Stuart “fired up” at his side in the sheds during round eight, the frustrated coach denied that he was and whispered “**** me” under his breath.

If he gets fined $20,000 thats $10 000 per word

Don’t swear in public in a press conference. No excuse. If a fine comes, can’t complain.

I heard the folks on NRL 360 talking fondly about the colour, passion, and interest that Ricky brings. That’s one take I guess- I’d like to see a little bit more control, consideration an example from a leader. No excuse - pay up and do better.

Worth a warning not a fine, yes he should be more professional but no ones stopping watching rugby league because of it.

It’s the rusted on’s that bother to listen to the press conferences, and very little listen to other game.

It’s probably the same when players swear on the field and heard on the referee mic. Or when you lip read coaches on the coaching box when it looks like they’re swearing.
20K for that is crazy.

Everyone in the NRL are leaders and role models. Kids will sit and watch the footy but not the post match press conference

None of that is a great look for the game but you could argue there is a difference between the heat of the moment where the camera may not necessarily be on you and a press conference where you are fronting the cameras. If he gets a warning that’s all good and well, but equally if he does cop a fine he should take it on the chin. I suspect he will get a warning and fair enough if he does.

The Trent Robertson one will be interesting. You can’t be calling the officials incompetent - but then the NRL essentially agrees with him by sacking them for a game. Do they keep the position that bagging officials of off limits or do we slightly shift to a position that’s it is ok to criticise refs so long as your criticism is proven to be correct.

Surely questioning the integrity and performance of the ref is worse than an under the breath swear word.

But NRL has shown continued inconsistencies when fining coaches for their post match conference comments. One week they’ll get off, the next week they’ll crack down on a minor thing.

Ricky swears under his breath and will get heavily fined.

Robinson calls the officials and bunker incompetent (because they were) and will get off.

Nothing would sum up how the two clubs are handled by the NRL better than that outcome.

Surely this is one of those things that if it was a regular occurrence, the NRL should crack down but if it is a one off slip of the tongue, hardly worth worrying about.

It would liven up press conferences if they changed the rules to allow coaches to say whatever they liked about officials so long as it was proven to be true.

“The touch judge really got that one wrong” - if the refs boss agrees then carry on, if not $10k.

“The ref was clearly on the take” - if receipts prove that to be correct then carry on, if not $100k.

Almost like a coaches challenge after the fact...

NRL give Ricky Stuart an official warning for press conference language

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has been issued with an official warning letter after swearing at a press conference on Saturday. It is Stuart’s second warning in six weeks after the Raiders coach was also given an official caution following a sideline incident in round three.

Ricky Stuart gets fined 10k uspended in case he reoffends and Trent Robinson gets to walk away scot free with a warning.

So predictable

Trent Robinson has been given a $10,000 fine, but it is a suspended fine. Personally, given how incompetent the NRL was in relation to the Roosters' last game, I think a warning would have sufficed for him too.

This one might blow your mind but believe it or not the aforementioned cases are not the first times in history that a jury has been unable to deliver a unanimous verdict in a criminal trial.

Approximately 10% of all jury trials in NSW result in hung juries Cat. It hardly an unfamiliar concept. You have taken a leap and made a link that I certainly wasn’t making and I highly doubt anyone else here was either.

Indeed.

Cat, the fact that the term “hung jury” even exists should be testament to the fact that the Hayne and De Belin cases are hardly the first times in history this has happened. My reference has nothing to do with disrespecting any females or alluding to any recent actual trials, it was merely a joke aimed at the NRL and their “justice system”. Stop being a snowflake getting triggered by everything.

Sure... pile on negative responses about the female person in the room. :doubt: It was pretty clear, given the events of the week... or last two weeks... what was being referred to. I didn’t take it the way cat did, but there is absolutely no need to attack cat for expressing her view on it. And perhaps cat has a perspective you didn’t think about.

Thanks GE,
And yes I am aware that hung juries happen all the time AND I am also aware that the current hung juries involving nrl players are the most widely known
I'm also aware you guys have never used that term when discussing nrl decisions and there is no jury in the nrl.
You may not have meant it to relate to the current court cases but you well and truly saw the connection and knew some might take it that way.
Its the same as comments you might not be meaning them to be racist but you know it could be seen to be so you just dont say it.

These women have been brave enough to say enough is enough and in the case of Debelin is looking down the barrel of giving evidence and being cross examined plus being written about daily for the 3rd time.
The least you could do is not include them in your childish jokes.

Well it’s not clear, given that wasn’t what I was referring to, but hey, continue asserting whatever you think I intended.

I’m also not “attacking” Cat anymore than she’s “attacking” me. She tells me not to disrespect some female that I’m not even referring to, I tell her not to get triggered over things that aren’t there. A difference of opinion clearly

1. Why ask “What other hung juries are there?” If you know they happen all the time?

2. Again, making completely unfounded assertions. I was not “fully aware” of how others would take my comment. It seems you and GE are the only ones they think of it that way. Others have pointed out you’re seeing something that isn’t there. Which as the author of said comment, can confirm.

3. The fact that two juries haven’t been able to agree that De Belin is guilty of anything, and with the presumption of innocence, shouldn’t we equally say “poor Jack having to face giving evidence in a third trial for something he may not be guilty of”? Or do we only respect and feel sorry for females, whether or not their accusation is potentially unfounded or untruthful. Apparently the defence found her to be lying on 30 occasions in cross examination.

4. I did not “include” female victims in anything, so don’t assert that I did. You interpreted it that way. They are not mentioned by me or alluded to.

5. Tony Williams openly berated the female alleged victim and called them **** dogs. Don’t you dare try to compare my comment to what he said. The “childish joke” is referring to the amateurish NRL, not any females in your head.

Who exactly am I “disrespecting” anyway? I’m sure the female from the De Belin case isn’t trawling the GH thinking “Ohh that comment is referring to me, how disrespectful.” Stop getting offended on others behalf’s over something that isn’t there.

NRL gives Ricky Stuart a warning over press conference

Post by gangrenous »

No need to be so defensive guys.

All it needed was a:
“I absolutely intended no link with the current trials, my joke was general in nature. I can see though that given recent high profile trials in the sport that people could link my joke to those, it was not one I even considered in writing my post.” Could even go all the way and apologise.

It’s not just about the girls in the case seeing the comment and being offended. It’s about a huge percentage of women who have experience with sexual abuse they don’t expect to have justice for being reminded of that and thinking that people in their community are ridiculing the victims of it.
