Canberra Raiders prop Josh Papalii says there's "good footy ahead"
As if the Canberra Raiders didn't have enough problems.
They've lost five matches in a row. Josh Hodgson has stepped down as co-captain. George Williams is homesick and reportedly heading back to the Wigan Warriors next year.
Now it looks like middle forward Ryan Sutton will be sidelined for a while, after hyperexteding his elbow in the loss to the Knights. Fellow forward, Joe Tapine has suffered a medial ligament sprain and winger Jordan Rapana has a hamstring problem.
But at least there is some good news. Josh Papalii is back - after being rested by coach Ricky Stuart for the Round 9 clash with the Rabbitohs - and showed some good form last Saturday. He says it is "good to be back with the boys".
"I had to do a lot of fitness by myself [the week before last] and that wasn't really pleasing," Papalii said today.
"I feel refreshed, I felt like I was just a bit drained going into the Souths game. Ricky made the call to rest me and I think that was a good move."
Papalii was happy with how he and the team played in the first half against the Knights, but then the club's second half blues returned.
"It's obviously a good start coming back in and starting the way we did. Our problem is our second half and we have to work on that this week. They boys are really training hard and knuckling down," Papalii said.
The Raiders face the last placed Canterbury Bulldogs in Magic Round at Lang Park this Saturday. If they don't win, their losing streak will be the worst the club has seen since 2013-14. The Raiders lost six games in a row to finish the 2013 season - and then the opening match of 2014.
Canberra would then face the prospect of an eight game losing streak - given they play the third placed Storm and fifth placed Roosters in the following two weeks. That'd equal the club's worst ever losing streak, last experienced in early 2011. The only other time the club has lost eight in a row was back in 1985-86.
Papalii - along with Jarrod Croker, Jack Wighton and Sam Williams - saw the 2011 losing streak first hand. But the club veterans have been assuring their team mates that things will turn around - and that there are better times ahead.
"Back in 2011 we lost eight in a row. Getting booed off the field. I've been here at the club when we weren't travelling too well. We had like six to eight thousand in the crowd," Papalii said.
"Sharing our experience that there's good footy ahead, I think that's all we can do at this moment."
"We're working hard away from the field. This year is no different to the last two years we've been very successful."
"It's just not paying off on the field. The boys are still focussed and still training hard which is the main point. I definitely know we'll turn it around, hopefully this week. If not it will be very soon."
Papalii says that the loss of Ryan Sutton to injury is a huge blow.
"He's probably one of five blokes who have been performing week in, week out," Papalii said.
"I definitely know he's had a sore back the last couple of weeks, but just performing well."
"He's going to be a massive loss, on field and off field. He's so professional with the way he approaches his game. I definitely know he'll be a massive loss and whoever takes his spot has some big shoes to fill."

Slight correction. Wighton didn't play 1st grade till 2012 so wasn't part of that 2011 losing streak.

You had better tell Josh! He didn't debut until Rd 10 of 2011, a game where the Raiders beat the Storm to break that eight game losing streak. Expect he was meaning that he and Jack were at the club at the time.Northern Raider wrote: ↑May 11, 2021, 3:27 pm Slight correction. Having watched since the early 90s I rexkob that’s the worst 1-5 on paper I’ve ever seen Canberra name in first grade.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Well that was a lot more injuries than we hoped for and glad to see Lui, James, and Hodgson back but I'm not impressed with Young starting after the month he has had... or CHN considering his lack of effort last week.

What happened to Sia? Injured or just dropped? Not even making the reserves list. He’s been about as effective as a wet lettuce leaf the past 2 seasons.

Re: 2021 Rd 10 V Bulldogs: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Lui ain’t gonna win us the game with try assists and line breaks.
But he’ll ‘rarely be caught’: lying on the ground after making a tackle, not covering his inside shoulder and not moving off the line in our red zone.
Same can’t be said for some of our other forwards this year.

Re: 2021 Rd 10 V Bulldogs: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
how does a bad positioning fullback in Aitkens and a lazy defener in Guler still make the team???? soo good to see Semi there, personally anything less then a 18+ marginal win is a loss. if the think they gonna beat dogs 20-12 and are off the hook to match it with storms then roosters, this is a make a STATEMENT game!!!!
