Re: Coaching issues
Stuart should be sacked. He's not a first grade coach, yet alone an elite coach. His methods are archaic and he's behind the times.
He's only good at feeding stories to Kent and Hooper so the Sydney media are with him. No idea.
Ricky Stuart OAM - should be NFI. NO F Idea.

Re: Coaching issues
What was our game plan there? Do we even **** have one or does Stuart think that makes it too complicated for our team?
Yet again a master stroke with the bench too... 8 minutes for Starling to chase a lead, which is what he always seems to save them for even though it has NEVER **** WORKED!
We needed a back again... why do we bother anymore?

And now watching the Storm just **** the Tigers... some of the players aren't even world beaters but they all look it through quality coaching and training....

Re: Coaching issues
I barely even have the will to write this post. it is so disheartening to watch the Raiders play.
Besides the untterly inept execution, the tactics are woeful.
anyone can see that attack is the strategy under the current rules. why in gods name do we persist with running it up behind the ruck, one pass and die with the ball making 2 fantastic metres.
its clear that far more progress is made with back line sweeping plays and try some offloads and back up the ball carrier so offloads can be made!!! All the *GOOD* teams are doing that.
With the way the game is played nowadays you have to have the ball. Defending your way to a win doesn't work.
Not one 40/20 with the wind like that in the firs half.
No imagination, no spark.
Wighton really is just a quick second rower. dumbest 5/8 in the game. Omg HE RAN to Sloan who had been taken out when there was a yawning gap on the left!!!!!!!!!
And now Im over Rapana.... sure he seems to try but he is ineffective. we would lose NOTHING if he was gone.
Im not gonna blame valemei, Timoko or Simmonson they are inexperienced. We all know Williams is just a backup half. It is the strategy. and thats the coach. I know Ricky bleeds green but that is not enough.
Im now proud to say I'll be a fair weather fan from now on. So yeh, see ya when the world changes.

Who cares about the result - let’s talk about the atrocious brand of football we play under Rick.
It’s dumb, and it’s uninspiring

Re: Coaching issues
Stuart's brand of football is ineffective in 2021, he's trying to win in a way that doesnt really work anymore, other coaches have seen it and adjusted, he steadfastly sticks to the plan thinking it will turn around. It won't.
We dont have the talent to play the way we did 2 years ago and even if we did, the game is moving quickly towards a very different style of football
If we are being fair and honest, the last 5 years prior to this probably earn him the right to rectify it and come back again in 2022.
But he has to adjust and adapt. And if he cant, we have to move on

Re: Coaching issues
I acknowledge that’s likely to happen (or he’ll get even more leeway)… but the longer we delay punting him, the longer you can expect us to be in purgatory for.Botman wrote: ↑June 19, 2021, 8:07 pm Stuart's brand of football is ineffective in 2021, he's trying to win in a way that doesnt really work anymore, other coaches have seen it and adjusted, he steadfastly sticks to the plan thinking it will turn around. Re: Coaching issues
Ricky Stuart simply cannot being coaching or designing the attack of the Canberra Raiders come 2022. It's the root of most of the problems we have there.
Re: Coaching issues
That phase just before the halftime break when Hodgson stole the ball said everything to me.
Rapana scoots out of dummy half to get a roll on. Hodgson gets the ball, the entire left hand side stacked with shape, Dragons scrambling, and he plays it to **** Guler.
Guler gets away a slow as **** PTD, still have the numbers though, and Jack drops it cold - probably because he's thought too far ahead of the play.
One of the worst passages of play I've seen from us this season, from our two highest paid players who are supposed to be our best, and sums up everything wrong with Rocky ball.

Re: Coaching issues
The Raiders management need to watch this game the Storm are putting on... They have the same salary cap we do (usually) so what makes it so different? They are missing some of their best players, doesn't matter. They are 40 points up at the half, doesn't matter. Professional from end to end, every player, every staff member...
How are we even in the same competition as the Storm? They look four levels above us... We couldn't beat their reserve grade side...

Average points in the second half for us this season 5.28
The Tigers just beat that against the Storm. We kept scoreless three times, including against the Storm. We are garbage.

We must be the only team in the comp that doesn’t use basic tactics like inside balls and changing up angles in attack. Every single play we run is aimed at the corner post and results in our outside backs getting crowded.

Re: Coaching issues
The way you play all comes down to the way you train. Every part of it.
Do the Storm come out on game day and magically run everything at speed and with precision, presenting multiple options on both sides of the ball at all times? Gotta be kidding.
This is purely by design, drawn up by an astute coach and supporting cast, and coached to within an inch of their lives on the training paddock. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Make a mistake? Start it all again, until it's perfect. Come out and it's muscle memory. That's the only way you can achieve that sort of consistency and cohesion, underpinned by a sufficient level of talent and fitness level. It's why they can lose plenty of players, yet still keep playing with the same basic principles and patterns of play.
We often seem to put too much down to 'ohh, their heads just weren't in it today'. Bull. These are professional athletes. They LIVE for game day. It's that instinct made them who they are, and reach the level they're at. They don't train one way and then decide to play totally different when the match is on.

What we see on game day IS what they’re coached…and it’s embarrassing.
Listen to his pregame comments…reeked of conservative tuck it under the arm rubbish…which is what we got.
It’s as if the weather provided him with the perfect opportunity to excuse himself from actually coaching and default to the same **** tactics we promote on dry or wet tracks…
We’re pretty much **** until he leaves or hires an attacking assistant that can change what we do.
But the players can’t be totally excused… listen to some of our players and they are dumb as sand… it shows in their application to the simple task of ..the rule book..
Nobody is accountable and “bad luck” is the only consistent performance measure we seem to excel in every week…
It’s as if we walked under all the ladders in Canberra over the offseason while kicking every black cat we encountered into a glass window…
We’re ****.

We are playing 2019 football under the 2021 interpretation
Stick being off the pace last year didn't really stand out because only the storm and the Panthers really nailed the change
But in 2021 way more teams have it right

It's time to go, Ricky
Forget about the personnel. Forget about recruitment. The one and most obvious thing that needs to change is the coaching staff. I have had enough of losing to mediocre teams like St George, Newcastle, NZ, Nth Qld, and getting flogged by good teams with more than half their side out (Melbourne, Roosters).
Stuart needs to be sacked - straight away. No Idea. The fans that want him to stay are only basing that on pure sentiment and emotion. He cannot coach. 3 years only into finals out of 8. Left Roosters, Cronulla and Parra completely.
We wouldn't win with the Storm, Roosters, Penrith players with Stuart as coach
We wouldn't win with all those player combined with Stuart as coach
Ricky Stuart, OAM
about attack
about playing the game with the rule changes
regarding use of interchange. Even up using 18th man meant we would have lost 2 points
regarding fitness/preparation
regarding kicking game and going for 40/20
about football smarts, tactics, opposition weaknesses
It's time to go Stuart

Go and have a nice warm bubble bath mate. I get why you are hurting but I can tell you with 100% conviction that he isn't going anywhere and I don't agree that means we are destined for the spoon while he is with us. there are no doubt things he should've done differently but he took this club to places we've not been since the glory days 3 times. This isn't by chance. Even during the glory days we didn't win every year with arguably the best roster in history. Everyone has years or periods where they underachieve. There will be players moved on and next year will be a new year. If we have prolonged poor performance for a number of consecutive years only then will he be at risk but for now he is safe so quit torturing yourself.
Re: It's time to go, Ricky
Just because you are willing to accept mediocrity doesn’t mean the rest of us have to. Players coming in next year are irrelevant when the system Rick oversees is broken for all to see.FROG wrote: ↑June 20, 2021, 6:22 am Go and have a nice warm bubble bath mate. In fact, good luck getting players to come here next year. I’m sure their eyes work - we are serving up absolute tripe week after week. Whats in it for a new Raiders recruit unless they are a prop forward willing to take crash balls every set? Every other position is made to look almost redundant with the way Rick coaches this team… it’d be the death knell for a player’s career to willingly come here and play Rick-ball in the modern era

Re: Coaching issues
The thing that Jack’s me is in that win there is a perfect opportunity to exploit it for extra possessions.
St George got 3 possession out of
Short kick off
40 20s
We didn’t even attempt 1
When we accidentally have a mid range kick off we let the ball bounce over our blokes heads back to the dragons it was sad…

Bellamy would have our CURRENT squad purring along in the top 4. Ricky has us barely a level above the two sides battling for the spoon.
Ricky doesn't own his results. He takes little to no responsibility for the outcome and is constantly looking to point fingers through his mates in the media and his enablers at the board level.
The rule changes didn't take us from final 4 to bottom 4. Ricky's inept coaching did.

Re: Coaching issues
That was awful. Why do we want to take settlers after a breakaway or turnover. Should spread it straight away. That's actually how RIcky used to play the game, why does our lot simply see it as a great opportunity to get in an easy 10m hit up?Northern Raider wrote: ↑June 19, 2021, 8:41 pmHard to argue with that. The prospect of getting the ball maybe on the 4th once every set if there's not much going on to interest Hodgo and never getting it when you really want it after a break or turnover because Hodgo sees that as the perfect opportunity to play to a prop up the middle...
You'd have a look and think the Raiders had a decent little period but clearly the game has passed by this coach and team now. Unless Ricky was selling a whole new vision of a different type of football next season I'd be preferencing other options.
Re: Coaching issues
StGeorge came out and actually tried to play footy. They backed themselves and took some risks to try and create chances. They moved the ball, oushed some offloads and had the nous and courage to try for those 40/20s. They dropped a few of the passes etc but they were trying high speed offloads to support runners sprinting onto it- high reward if they stick it.papabear wrote: ↑June 20, 2021, 8:26 am The thing that Jack’s me is in that win there is a perfect opportunity to exploit it for extra possessions.

We had a very conservative approach. We always do. Maybe the weather made them lean further into it. We had all the ball when they dropped it by trying to attack but because of our risk averse plodders up the middle one out approach we did nothing with it. We never took the game by the scruff like Hunt did. Jack, Sammy- where were they? Hodgo put his kicking away for the night and he tried to take control of the game... I just think his options were too often wrong, constantly looking to forward plays.
The game plan didn't work, pure and simple. It's pretty close to the same plan that has been working less and less often since 2019, and dramatically so this year.
Maybe Ricky thinks he doesn't have the cattle to change it up this season. I think he's be better off changing it up now and seeing which of our current cattle CAN actually thrive in a more dynamic, free flowing style of footy. Find one or two keepers, see who can't keep up and start the rebuild.
I don't see what we gain by plodding on like this waiting for it to magically "click".

We have the cattle.
Just look at how more recently the ball is making it out wide to CHN and Timoko…
These guys can play, but are rarely getting the ball…
Whitehead we Know can play too…
Since removing GW we are seeing the ball go wider both sides of the ruck…but not enough for me…
Last night we were 10000% told to be conservative from the kick off.
I’m at the point where it doesn’t matter who we recruit from a playing standpoint…
Our problem is the coaching….unless we recruit an attacking coach with the balls to drive change in how we play or Ricky is sacked for a brand new coach not familiar with the postcodes around Queanbeyan….we’re ****.

The earlier we get rid of Ricky, the better. Tear up the previous game plans, start with a blank sheet.
The club ain't going nowhere even with Hynes or Dufty, or any other "star".
We would be a top 4 side with Bellamy and Robinson.
