Despite covering less positions I think Papenhuyzen deserves that bench utility spot and would be a lot more dangerous than Jack. I'm thinking we might be back to one sole origin representative and even he will be picked on reputation and past performances unless the big fella picks things up.Bay53 wrote: ↑April 22, 2021, 7:53 amyeah I think we might be pretty light on come origin. Cotric is obviously no longer and Lui is not going to get picked from reserve grade. I think Jacko's only chance may be as the utility on the bench. He has not pushed up to be the 5/8 and I think there are better centre options.
His one chance may be that they like a back on the bench and he can really cover all positions from 1 to 7 or even play back row, where they often like a bit of fresh legs on the edge.

Of the backs in that team, I think only Xavier Savage would be considered for NSW Cup. In the forwards, Clay Webb, Caleb Esera and Trey Mooney either have or will play NSW Cup this year. JJ Clarkson would have too if he didn't suffer a really serious injury that will see him struggle to return in 2021.
Don't forget we have a whole squad of Under 21s that were due to play Flegg that can come into NSW Cup. I saw on the stream of the local league Manase Kaho was playing local comp. He should be developing in a state wide comp. Someone like that will come into NSW Cup.
Re: 2020 Rd 7 V Cowboys: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
I’d blindly pick Wighton at 6 for NSW. Has nothing to do with who he plays for.
His game is just suited to it. He passes early but he generally runs first. He’s strong, athletic and a great defender. Cody Walker may be a better NRL player on his day but he reminds me a bit of Cliff Lyons. Just not as suited to Origin as a Daley or Fittler. That high effort leading through toughness, thats what NSW needs at five-eighth and have been looking for for a decade or more. I’ll be annoyed as a blues fan if they don’t go that way.

100% agree. It is also why Keary didn't really work at Origin. It's a different game - also think that Cleary's strengths (kicking, organisation) complement Wighton well.julian87 wrote: ↑April 22, 2021, 3:20 pm I’d blindly pick Wighton at 6 for NSW. Has nothing to do with who he plays for.

A massive call. Last week's effort was almost Jack's best yet, trying to bomb in the middle of the field and missing the target by a cheeky 35m or so. I'll back him in to keep the streak going, amongst an otherwise much improved performance though.Danaman137 wrote: ↑April 21, 2021, 7:18 pmThat’s a big call.simo wrote:this is it. finally, this is the week. we will finally see a full 80 minutes without an uncharacteristic wighton kick out on the full

Eye to future as Sia Soliola goes to work behind the scenes at Canberra Raiders
Raiders prop Sia Soliola is preparing for life after footy, but the 34-year-old has refused to rule out playing on for an 18th season at the top in 2022. He has started coming into the Raiders on his days off to work with staff behind the scenes, and learn more about the organisation.
"I'm not saying this is something I'll be doing next year but it's just a stepping stone, whatever decision I make - this is contributing to life after footy basically," Soliola said.

Love Sia to bits, absolute club legend and a no-brainer for carrying on with the club after his playing career is over.
But it might be time to start thinking about ruling out an 18th year methinks.

We all know what young NRL players can be like, Sia could take and no be paid in line to a 29th/30th spot on our roster for the next two years and make a good contribution to the team

I think having someone inside that too 30 on min wage would be a worthy investment.
Young guys are going to see first hand how someone prepares for a game, how they act on the field and how they handle their post match and recovery for one of the “staff”

It’s disrespectful because without the likes of Sia joining us in the preliminary stages of Ricky’s appointment here, the standards we’ve come to judge the team on wouldn’t exist.radicalraider wrote: ↑April 22, 2021, 10:08 pmWhys it disrespectful? Love Sia to bits, absolute club legend and a no-brainer for carrying on with the club after his playing career is over.
But it might be time to start thinking about ruling out an 18th year methinks.
I’d love Sia to stay at the club outside of football and I have no doubt he’ll make the right call about playing on or not.
He has been an inspiration to the club and the younger guys coming through. The exact type of guy you need in every football club to set the standards and show what “being a professional” looks like.

GE laughing all the way to the bank on that one. Claimed a couple of big scalps too.

Luai should get the spot because he's the best nsw eligible 5/8th by miles (On form) and is often more impactful than Cleary.

You also can't select all 30 players under your cap in the top 17.radicalraider wrote: ↑April 22, 2021, 10:10 pmYou dont need to pay a mentor from your salary cap.Rick wrote: ↑April 22, 2021, 8:58 pmI would love to see him play on in reserves to set the standard and be a mentor for the younger guys. Why can’t he fulfil the role behind the scenes whilst also playing on being a leader on the park for the guys on the fringe. I imagine out too 17 would still love to have him around in that pseudo role also.

If he's blue eligible then surely he gets it. He's playing the best and no-one else was really a nailed on incumbent.
Jack might make centres or #14.

if you arent making more meters with a faster ptb then it is damning on your hooker / forwards.Boomercm wrote: ↑April 21, 2021, 8:02 pmI was talking about this with a league mate recently. Against Penrith I agree he was poor but really against the Eels he "didnt run hard"
He made 114 m with 58 of them post contact. How is he consistently bending the line like that if hes not running hard ? I think he could be more involved (which is probably the message stick is trying to send or there are concerns about his defence after returning up in the North) but i highly disagree with anyone arguing he isn't running the ball hard enough. I think thats a perception around him kind of looking sleepy.
Find me a player in our team who gains post contact metres like Tapine ?

incorrect. is play the ball speed measured from first contact to ptb or from held to ptb? because the former is the one that gets your team momentum.papabear wrote: ↑April 23, 2021, 10:42 amif you arent making more meters with a faster ptb then it is damning on your hooker / forwards.Boomercm wrote: ↑April 21, 2021, 8:02 pmI was talking about this with a league mate recently. Based on NRL form Cody Walker is up there with Luai. Issue is Walker has not cut it as an Origin 5/8 when given the opportunity. I'm also of the belief his game is heavily dependent on Reynold managing the team around the park. He might be one of those guys who struggles to perform outside his comfort zone.
