TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502

Weather: Mostly sunny. The chance of fog in the morning. Mostly sunny afternoon. Light winds. Chance of any rain: 5 per cent. Min 3 Max 19

The Raiders face another big test this week, when they host the Parramatta Eels at Canberra Stadium.

Last round: 2021 Round 5. Penrith Panthers 30 - Canberra Raiders 10. Not good enough yet. It was a big test for the Raiders and one they did not pass. It turned out to be a reality check for the Green Machine. The Panthers planned a party for the 30th anniversary of their first premiership - when they beat the Raiders in the 1991 Grand Final. And party they did.

More on Round 5: As I saw it

Team news: The Raiders will be without fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, who is suffering from a bulging disc in his neck. He faces an extended period on the sideline. Caleb Aekins will replace CNK - and make his NRL debut in green. Curtis Scott (ribs) returns at centre, with Sebastian Kris dropping to the reserves list. Josh Hodgson (hip) has been cleared to take his place at hooker. Ryan James has been rested, with Joe Tapine back at lock. Emre Guler has been named for his first game of the season on the bench.

Eels five eighth Dylan Brown has been suspended for this game. Brown was issued with a charge for a crusher tackle and has taken the early guilty plea. Ryan Matterson (concussion) returns in the back row pushing Isaiah Papali'i to the bench. Keegan Hipgrave has been been included in the top 17 on the bench.

Late changes: The Raiders omitted Matt Frawley and Dunamis Lui from their squad of 21 on Friday evening, leaving Seb Kris and Corey Harawira-Naera on the reserves list. The Eels cut Ryan Matterson and Joey Lussick. Matterson has suffered continued signs of concussion, and is replaced by Isaiah Papali'i in the second row. Haze Dunster has been added to the bench.

History: Canberra has won 31 of 60 games against the Parramatta Eels. The Raiders have lost just three times to the Eels in the past 10 matches - but have lost the last two games. The Raiders were on a five game winning streak against Parramatta, before falling to the Eels 22-16 in Darwin in 2019. Last year the Eels led 24-12 with five minutes left, before the Raiders levelled the match, through two tries to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in the space of two minutes. Sadly, Clint Gutherson kicked a field goal in golden point, to secure a 25-24 win for the Eels at Western Sydney Stadium. The Raiders have won 18 of 22 games at Canberra Stadium - and the Eels have not produced a victory at the ground since 2006. The Raiders have won the last nine matches between the clubs in the nation's capital.

2020 Round 7: Canberra Raiders V Parramatta Eels

Form: Raiders: WWLWL
Eels: WWWWL

The Eels are coming off their first loss of the season, defeated by the Dragons 26-12 at Western Sydney Stadium. They started the year with four straight wins over the Broncos (24-16), Storm (16-12), Sharks (28-4) and Tigers (36-22). The Raiders have had a 3 and 2 start to their season.

Betting: The Raiders are $1.62 favourites, while the Eels are paying $2.30. The Eels have 3.5 points start in the line betting. The Eels odds shortened as injury and suspension news has filtered out, but the Raiders have firmed late in the week.

Stat attack: The Eels rank second in the competition for offloads, tackle breaks, post contact metres and running metres - while they rank third for kick return metres. The Raiders used to be the best at shutting down offloads. No longer. They rank second for ineffective tackles, the Eels fourth.

2021 Season record: Raiders 3 and 2 (8th, +13)
Eels 4 and 1 (5th, +36)

Attack: Raiders 21 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked equal 10th on tries scored
Eels 23 points and 4 tries scored per match, ranked equal 6th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 8th on fewest tries conceded
Eels 16 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked equal fifth on fewest tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 48 per cent, Eels 51 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 75 per cent, Eels 77 per cent

Running: Raiders 1544 running metres from 175 runs (12 dummy half runs), 142 kick return metres, 557 post contact metres per match
Eels 1838 running metres from 193 runs (9 dummy half runs), 226 kick return metres, 647 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 32, Eels 34 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 4, Eels 5 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Eels 3 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 3, Eels 3 per match

Offloads: Raiders 7, Eels 13 per match

Kicking: Raiders 576 kicking metres from 20 kicks per match
Eels 577 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 348 made, 31 missed, 20 ineffective per match, 87 per cent tackle efficiency
Eels 369 made, 24 missed, 20 ineffective per match, 90 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1371, Eels 1575 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Eels 13 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 4, Eels 2 per match

Penalties awarded: Raiders 4, Eels 4 per match

Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 5, Eels 4 per match

Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 3, Eels 4 per match

Key match-ups:

George Williams and Mitchell Moses: Raiders half George Williams has another strong opponent this week. Mitchell Moses has lifted his game significantly since moving to the Eels - and if he plays well, the Eels fire. His kicking game is particularly strong. George Williams' numbers for 2021 compare pretty well in attack and he is definitely the better defensive player. Williams has averaged 23 tackles per game this year (14) and posted an 84 per cent tackle efficiency rate (Moses 80 per cent). Williams' form just shades that of Moses this year.

Image

Josh Papalii and Junior Paulo: Mate against mate. Junior Paulo spent three years at the Raiders, but he's lifted to a new level of fitness and form since he returned to the Eels. Josh Papalii is the best prop in the game - and was one of the Dally M Props of the Year in 2020. But he admits he's started the 2021 season slowly. For him. His 2021 numbers still beat Paulo overall.

Image

Josh Hodgson and Reed Mahoney: Raiders hooker Josh Hodgson spent half the 2020 season on the sidelines, after suffering an ACL injury in the Round 9 clash with the Storm. Tom Starling has come on for Hodgson late in the past couple of weeks - and his game works well under the new rules designed to speed the game. He plays up tempo, giving quick service to the halves or scooting directly out of dummy half. Hodgson is still working on the combinations with his halves - and how best to take advantage of the new rules. Reed Mahoney has had a good start to 2021. He's got a high defensive work rate - and better tackle efficiency than Hodgson (91 per cent, compared with 87 per cent for Hodgson). Hodgson has been one of the best hookers in the NRL for some time - but Mahoney's 2021 form is probably better overall.

Image

My tip: Both teams are coming off losses and will be looking to bounce back. The Raiders are favourites in this match, but to be honest, I'm surprised by that - particularly given the news that Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will be on the sidelines. The Eels have lost their five eighth to suspension for this match - but overall, they have been in better form this season. That's what most of the numbers show. The heart says Raiders at home, but the numbers suggest that this will be a narrow win for the Eels. Eels by four.

What they're saying:

Josh Papalii: "It's just a good stepping stone for myself to see where I'm at. I've started slow this season and that's something I didn't want to do. It is what it is, now I get to play against the best two props in the game. I think I need to get my hands on the ball more and try to get us on the front foot and set a foundation. There are glimpses of good carries and then bad carries, but I'm working on it."

He didn't call a marginal ball forward in the first half and the whole game spiraled out of control from there!

Emre Guler's long awaited return for the Canberra Raiders

He was only supposed to miss two and a half months of game time due to injury but now eight and a half months down the track, Emre Guler is preparing to return to NRL action.

“I went for a hit up and my foot got stuck under someone’s body and I fractured - they call it the malleolus bone, which is connected to the heel,” Guler said. “We thought I’d be out maybe eight weeks tops, but then every time I got a scan it was two steps forwards, one step back.

I’d love to see us do to Parra, what Penrith did to us last week...
Line speed, aggressive defensive and purpose in attack.

Just had a closer look at the squads. Our bench should have more of an impact than theirs esp if CHN comes in for Havili which I think will happen.
If we start well we should get em in the 2nd half. 24 16 Raiders WIN.

The team will probably be as named with Kris as 18th man
