Jordan Rapana as left winger

Post by BadnMean »

So how long is this going to run?

He's bombed 3 tries there late last season in big games.

He's bombed a match-winner there today.

You can't say "oh it's not the wingers job"- scoring those tries is literally the wingers job. 8/10 need to be scored.

Especially when the winger keeps bombing them because he's carrying the ball in his right hand trying to score on the left side. It gives the defenders a play at the ball. It makes the geometry harder. It takes away your ability to shield the ball with the other hand. It costs tries. It's clearly not his natural side (no matter what he says, the eyes and evidence stack to no).

He makes a break and carries it under his right arm every time- needs to swap and then try to palm it costs time he no longer has due to no pace.

I was hopeful after the trial.

But with no pace anymore, Jordy can just about survive as a right winger. On the left, he'll cost games.

Yeah yeah forwards out... but honestly a winger who can't pick up a drop ball and hit the clear, who continually bombs tries from 10m out due to glaring technical errors caused by being on the wrong side and not adapting (happening since 2020)... you can't win a comp that way.

Decent wingers are making half chances into tries not failing to finish clear chances repeatedly. Sad to say.

Yep, he’s on the wrong side, and that bombed try just highlights it

No idea why we’re persisting with this garbage, he’s even wearing the right winger’s number!

Do we have a left wing option?

Bailey played left in 2019 didn’t he?

If you have a winger that can't run away to score from a huge head start, then I don't really see much point to them. We can talk about all the ways a winger's game has changed and the other attributes they bring, but if you aren't finishing, you aren't doing your job.

Agree that right wing will probably get a bit more out of him, but our backline is still dragging the chain too much in certain areas. If he still had decent speed in him he wouldn't have had to worry about which hand to go with - he would've got there regardless.

You get so tied up in one idea you can’t think about anything else.

Rapana was generally superb today, and set up two very good tries. The team should have been able to capitalise off the back of his 80m break too.

He should be able to score that try with a start like that, you agenda driven muppet. He himself. Without anyone else's aid.

If you took off your rosey green player focused goggles you'd see that. He doesn't have enough speed. Neither do CNK, Croker, or Scott. It's hurting us.

I think Rapana is looking pretty good this season, and there’s still a place for him in the team with the way he’s playing... just on the other side of the field

He’s objectively a much cleaner and better finisher on the other side
Don’t think it matters today, because his problem today is he doesn’t have the juice he once did
But he’s playing on the wrong side

I’m more worried about Simonson. That’s a few times now he has just pancakes and thrown the ball for no reason. If it was not for the backline reshuffle next week due to Scott I would be seriously contemplating Hoppa.

If only that's when the game ended, hey?

We would've very likely won it at end despite what we went through if we had a played a naturally left sided winger in his position, and/or he had enough toe to get there.

Check all the notes you want, because it won't distort that reality.

Look I’m all for playing Rapana on the right. It’s the smart move in my opinion.

I’m just not going to sook about his speed to the line trying to score in a game where he slaughtered himself for 80 mins and was generally excellent and heavily involved in other tries that arguably don’t happen with your hypothetical left wing specialist.

Rapana is our best back. Klokstad is a very mediocre, Simonssen is unproven, Croker might as well be a ballboy and Scott is no BJ. We have abundance of depth in the forwards but our backline is slim pickings. We won’t win a Premiership with this backline.

100%.

There were moments in that game when Rapa was the only guy willing to take the hit-up.

He made ground and palmed off guys all game. He also did some pretty impressive things like setting up Elliott’s try.

He’s not fast any more and may be on the wrong side but he was one of our best today.

I just rewatched the final play and am now of the opinion that Rapana’s right hand was the only option for putting that ball down. His left shoulder and arm are well over the sideline by the time he gets to the corner post so I don’t think the argument that a left handed would have scored it has any validity. He made the only play he could and RTS pulled off a freak stop.

Rapa definitely one of our best today. But yes, as we've been saying for a year, we need some spees in the outside backs.

I think you are absolutely correct.

Rapana was superb today, absolutely one of our best. That kick he put on for Whitehead's try was fantastic.

In saying that, I think he should be playing on the right, but I don't think he did anything wrong in that try scoring movement. RTS played it superbly, but there is no way he's close to scoring with his left hand.

And was a very handy finisher there. You don't need to BE left handed, it's a skill you can develop, or just be versatile enough to do both.
