If we landed Kotoni, I'd get Ricky's face tattooed across my hindquarters and re-name all of my kids a variant of "Ricky". I'd love him down here, the new high-performance joint would fix his knee. But the Broncos wouldn't let him go in a fit.

afgtnk wrote: April 27, 2021, 8:07 pm I haven't paid close attention to Hynes yet, but after a few of the appraisals on here I'll be sure to do so this weekend.

My preference is for a more speedy fullback who's a natural support player with decent fullback-level ballplaying skills (Tedesco, Turbo level), rather than a more pure ballplayer, because I feel it's a better fit for the team. The ability and skills needed to ballplay in the halves as opposed to fullback differs a lot - I don't believe you need a halves capable player of being in the number one, and certainly when I look across the board at what other clubs have, most of them aren't.

From what I've seen of Hynes he seems to be more the latter, but will pay closer attention to him in order to make a more detailed judgement.
This very point is what made me really rethink this... i think this Canberra Raiders football team does actually need it. Because our halves are ball runners first and play players second. Having that element that goes either side of the ruck could be an incredible level up
I definitely see it the other way. Although we don't have the very top creative halves in the comp, both these guys are top 4-5 halves in general, and you need a strong level of creative ability to be able to reach that. Plus, we've got arguably the most creative dummy half in the game to contend with, and he needs to find his role somewhere.

I think simply because they're such strong runners (George less so, but still quick and an excellent support player), it overshadows any ability with the ball and unfairly gets them labelled - particularly when we've got the setup of the team wrong, as I strong believe we do. If they couldn't run, people would view them as natural 'organising' halves, expecting them to do their thing to allow the running guy to run... because that's what guys who can't run as well generally get labelled as. Thing is, the two facets of the game aren't mutually exclusive.

Re Hynes; I’d be very hesitant to pick up a Melbourne player that’s not an obvious gun.

Re Staggs; he’s a gun. But he’s just done an ACL and is in a position that we’re all lamenting how much were spending in for no reward. Good luck to whichever club wants to spend 700k+ on a centre.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

What about Drinkwater now the cowboys have signed two halves and have holmes at Fullback?
Ballplayer with a bit of pace and also an option in the halves if we suffer a long term injury?
I'm not sure hes that good but i'm also not convinced he couldnt improve in to really good ball playing fullback

He's had his moments and there is talent there that is very enticing... but not a horse i'd hitch my wagon to if im honest. Not sure why.

I’m of the opinion he’s in the easiest role in rugby league so it’s not that clear cut. I think a gun 25 year old fullback would have played more than 20 games at the top level, but that’s just me.

Yea i'd agree Hynes would be somewhat of a gamble. Theres a fairly decent list of outside backs that have looked rep quality at melbourne and proved to be very average on decent money deals elsewhere. Wow didnt realise he is 25. Thought he was 4/5 years younger than that.

Well what about Sticky then?

I saw a photo of him putting up a bomb at training the other day. Surely he could fill in for a game or two if needed.

He and Dufty are the same age.

Upon watching more footage of Hynes, and although I would prefer a quicker player, I think he's got quite a good skillset we could make use of, provided we make some upgrades to the backline and increase our off the ball movement.

IDK, get one of them i think... they'll help in different ways.
but i guess the idea that they're able to take their game to another level takes a hit for me.... 25 is probably their physical peak

Yes there is some risk re Hynes that Storm are making him look good. Just as how Benji looks better now he's at Souths. Notwithstanding, I think it's a solid buy. Not necessarily saying he'd turn us into an elite team, but should be handy at worst

The age doesn't bother me. Cody Walker was a late bloomer too. He had mental health issues apparently, you'd think they were probably the cause of any late bloomance, seems to be right now

We took BJ on at 24, who went to many levels above what he was producing previously to become one of the most dangerous centres in the game, and Rapa at 25, who became one of the best wingers in the game with no top level football for five years.

I wouldn't be too concerned about age. It's about what we can do for them and help them kick on.

Hang on, aren't Stick and Bellyache mates? He owes us one for Scott too. This could happen...

Hynes is reasonably tall and still only 90kg. Judging by that, there's still probably some physical improvement to be made there too considering he's a little bit late to full time footy.

Scott Drinkwater is probably the closest you'll get to satisfying botman's prejudice. If you want younger Tex Hoy is probably next.

I wonder if we're actually looking for anyone though. Any talk about Raiders signing anyone has been very quiet, in fact non existent. In the modern game there are very few teams, if any, who can afford to be quiet in the player market

And offloading Townsend too who was probably on 500k ish as a starting half

Good times ahead perhaps for the Sharks. I like Connor treacy too, him with Adam Reynolds good be a very good pairing

Bulldogs backline will be better than ours in 2022 if we sit still...

1. DWZ
2. Addo Car
3. Naden
4. Hoppa
5. Cotric
6. Burton
7. Flanagan

That's not bad...They are in desperate need of a No.9.
