Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
Watching the Storm v Dragons game, it was a reminder of how speed, with the combination of youth, is the way to go. Croker needs to be put to pasture, he adds nothing, except the weight of his wasted $600,000 salary. We shouldn't extend Sia and Rapana. We have recruited badly in the last two years, Scott has not been a success and the jury is out on CHN and James.

Our recruitment and retention of late has been poor...
That’s why I give us no hope for signing Dufty or Hynes ...when in fact we should be signing both...
Who was the last coveted player we have actually signed?
We absolutely should be prioritising speed and ball playing with whoever we recruit..
The game is moving into a less defensive style and more attacking flair...

Totally agreed. During Ricky's time, we only sign rejects who had some problems with their clubs (Scott, CHN - before then Paulo, Joey) or an injury history (James) or from England where we pay a transfer fee and some don't work out. We signed some decent young unwanted players like CNK, Blake Austin and Tapine but CNK and Austin were in reserve grade. So was Scott. Tapine was not a regular in 1st grade at the time of signing. The last 1st grade signing was Aidan Sezer.GreenMachine wrote: ↑May 16, 2021, 6:16 pm Our recruitment and retention of late has been poor...

I would keep Hodgson, get rid of Croker, Sia, Rapana and Dunamis.

Or worse, we’ll throw money at Ryley Jacks again...

Mick Ennis talking about how Hynes should stay at Storm, to win premiership etc
I take that to mean Ricky, Don and co have no interest, or no cap, to get him

The club’s recruitment between 2014/15-2019 has been the best shift through recruitment any club has made in the NRL era. Let’s not try and re-write history ****.
Jordan Rapana
Blake Austin
Sia Soliola
Josh Hodgson
Elliott Whitehead
Joe Tapine
Joey Leilua
Aidan Sezer
Charnze Nicol Klokstad
John Bateman
Ryan Sutton
All sensational signings and as a group really shifted the fortunes of the club.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
I'll admit Nicho looks good at the storm. But then again so did Ryley jacks, scott Drinkwater and Brodie croft. He has definitely hit a purple patch but he is just as likely to end up just as those other blokes have if he were to leave.
Dufty no doubt offers a lot in attack, but as has been said, for every try he sets up CNK saves one. CNK also averages over 200m per game. Is it any wonder we are struggling without him.
So while I'd be interested in these 2, I wouldn't go all in for either of them

All those signings have been great but we weren’t exactly racing other teams to get them...
we’ve also rested on our laurels and retained a few players too long...
The last time we threw our hat into the ring and signed a coveted player was Teddy....he’s still unbeaten as a Raider...

This myth that CNK stops a million tries a game has simply gotten way out of hand. It's even growing the longer he's out.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
I just read an article about Nicho knowing he’ll have to leave the storm and said there are no offers on the table right now
There should be at least one by COB today

I assume the delay has been because Stick and co have spent the morning putting together the Dufty offer

I also doubt we’re offering Hodgson an extension...
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
If we're losing George and Hodgson, then we have serious money and Hynes and Dufty should be both on the radar
Getting both imo would be best, but if we can come away with one of them and use the money to pick up one of the loose halfbacks cheaply, that'd would be ok too i guess.
Have to get one at least one of those guys.

The only way they can afford Hynes is to offload Isaako apparently, so one has to come before the other.GreenMachine wrote: ↑May 19, 2021, 6:50 pmIf they are letting Issako go, then I’d say they have Hynes in the bag.greeneyed wrote: ↑May 19, 2021, 6:42 pmLooks like they're happy to let Tevita Pangai Jnr and Jamayne Isaako go too...

So if we were to lose/get rid of:
George Williams
Hodgson
Havili
Lui
Rapana
Soliola
Croker
What would that free up - a good 2.5-3 million?
Has there been a single noise from us making some kind of move in the player market, or is the club just sitting back and sucking their thumbs, thinking that it'll all pan out ok?

And frankly we have good in house options to replace Hodgson, so we can go really hard at a quality outside back and half

We should be in the market now planning for next season knowing where the rules are headed...
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
Honestly even ignoring Croker, just George and Hodgson is about 1.4m to spend. We have the funds to do something very significant

All we can do is trust that our think tank are having conversations all the time about recruitment/retention.
Clearly we need to strengthen our back 5. I hope these discussions are goin on within the walls..

Such as when exactly? That's very optimistic of you. Usually if there's half a whisper about anyone, journos are all over it. Us being low-key enough to fly under the radar, I think that's less likely than us simply not being in the market. But hey, I'd rather be positive too, I'm just cautious...-PJ- wrote: ↑May 19, 2021, 7:16 pmDon has proved on a few occasions he keeps his wheeling and dealing in house.afgtnk wrote: ↑May 19, 2021, 6:58 pm So if we were to lose/get rid of:

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
It may not be prudent to be signing anyone for the back 5 until we know if Croker is playing on or not.
Makes a pretty huge difference to what we go to market with.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2021
Not at all. Hodgson is going, is one of our highest paid players and we already have the inhouse options
So you can pivot that money away from the hooker spot to the back 5 regardless of what happens with Croker.
The Croker situation is not going to resolve itself in time for this Free Agency period. I dont think he's on the books for 2022, and certainly not 2023, but that situation is likely to come to a head in pre-season 2022 or during the season.
It's a long term play.

The resolution to that might not come in time to be useful for this coming off season though.
Regardless, Jarrod Croker in his current state should not be considered as part if our recruitment decisions.
