Potential player exchange could preserve Hodgson’s Leichhardt link-up

Josh Hodgson's proposed shift to the West Tigers has come to a steady halt after teammate Tom Starling was charged by police following an alleged physical altercation. While some doubt has now been cast over Hodgson's proposed move, The Australian's Brent Read believes that a simple swap with Hodgson and Jacob Liddle should be taken into strong consideration.

Liddle as a backup is fine.

I love the idea of signing Jacob Liddle provided it doesn't break the bank. Injuries has no doubt inhibited his progress but had massive wraps on him as a junior and he could prove to be very handy if hodgo does depart

I thought he was pretty good in a bad team last yr. Id prefer Simpkin, but I dont think Tigers will let him walk.
Tigers fans disagree BTW. They are happy to see the back of him.
He will be cheap too.

Think it was in the Hodgson thread I compared Liddle to Mitch Rein. Would be an excellent reserve hooker albeit not great as your first choice. Given he'd likely be backup to Starling I reckon it's a great option.

Yep, I saw that.
Rein off the Eels. A decent backup to Mahoney, and similar play style.
Liddle actually might be a better ball player than Starlo, but despite his size, Id back Starlo defensively.

I'd be happy with Liddle as 2nd fiddle. Solves the hooker riddle nicely.

Simpkin is the player they want to keep. Be better if we could sneak that one in but Liddle as a backup is fine.

Do you really think he would sign for a Club his older brother was let go from?

No chance
Maybe not... But Ricky said himself he still talks to Joey on the regular so it can't be that bad.
I thought there were stories of BJ still travelling back to Canberra, possibly even training with some of our guys?
He spent a lot of time in the Raiders facilities. Lately he’s been training hard for the boxing ring and onlookers say he’s the fittest ever.
Well they have to say that tbf. They’d be jerks if they came out saying “Yeah, he’s tonked it. He’s not that great..”
Feel free to call me RickyRicky StickStick if you like. I will also accept Super Fui, King Brad, Kid Dynamite, Chocolate-Thunda... or Brad.

Pretty much. We’ll have a few missing for a number of games this year.

I thought Papallii at least had a medical exemption due to past reactions to vaccine? I may be wrong.

I'm reasonably confident he said he'd get the covid vax

He said in August he wouldn’t. And based on Instagram, he probably won’t be the only one.

Raiders star Josh Papalii won't get COVID-19 vaccine: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/ ... 9-vaccine/

Doctors have said they won't give many if any exemptions due to the 2 different types of vaccine.

So if you can't have one, chances are the other would be fine.

Brendon Smith is about to go on the open market. He'll be pricey, but if the Raiders can offload Hodgson they might be able to at least put in a credible bid.

There's also the Rapana and CNK Kiwi connection that could get it over the line.

I think Smith will go for a price well beyond his value as a playmaking dummy half, but he is a competitor and a quality middle.

We should be in the conversation if Hodgo goes, but I expect we won't be desperate enough to pay overs.

So we'd be replacing Hodgson with a younger version of himself. Works for me.

I actually see Brandon Smith as the closest version of Steve Walters as I've seen at dummy half in a long while. Not a great deal of finesse in his game.

Brandon Smith will command offers from almost every club in the NRL. He is no chance of signing with us for anything other than massive overs (and even then maybe not) and by even bringing him up you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

I suppose there's a possibility that he doesn't want to go to Sydney - there's no basis for this, but it's a possibility whilst he's not there at the moment. I think that's the only chance there is.

Smith and Hodgson’s games are polar opposites. Smith is a quick battering ram. Hodgson is a slow crash ball merchant with no lateral movement, and a very poor defender.
Ata Mariota’s #1 fan. Bless his cotton socks.

So who is in the box seat for Smith apart from the obvious GC and Redcliffe?

How much would we have in the kitty if Hodgson is released and Croker is medically retired?
