Harley Smith-Shields suffered biceps tendon damage in the NSW Cup loss to the Mounties on Saturday.

Just saw Hodgo slightly limping in the Canberra Centre with a compression bandage on his leg. I think we can rule out a fake injury as some suggested.

Or perhaps it’s an elaborate ruse to throw GH’ers off the scent.

Ricky leaves no stone unturned. I hear that Ricky is secretly inside the Victor Viking outfit so he can be closer to the play.

I'd imagine if I was as important to my boss as Papa is to the raiders it'd be a pretty easy conversation to use some long service leave.

To put it in proper context, this is an extract from the story...

The prop, who hopes to make his return against Newcastle in Wagga Wagga next Saturday, said: “I plan to come back next weekend, but it’s only 50/50 at the moment.

“If the boys go well there’s no reason for ‘Sticky’ to change the team next weekend. I’m not looking that far ahead.

Read more: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-pr ... 93df35c60a

So looks like he wants to return, but wasn't sure he'd be selected. It appears the interview was done before the match. So perhaps he's more confident of a return today than he was yesterday.

I've taken the reference out of the story above... this gives the proper context.

At the link above, they say expected return is in Round 9 or 10. He missed last night and could miss next week. But I'll change the title to say that he is expected to return in Round 9 or 10.

That boxing prep in the off season for Paps may have drained him for the footy program. In racehorse terms he's over the top this prep.

A freshen up with some beach work should have him primed for a first up kill.
Round 11 vs Storm at home.

I heard Cory Parker on fox last night mention the pre-season boxing as a possible reason he is down on form. He was trying to suggest it was more about his confidence taking a hit in that he would have hoped for an easier more dominant win over Hannant. I thought that was an odd take!

I wouldn’t be putting much gravitas to anything Corey Parker has to say.

Normally yes but it's true, he's gassed already and it's round 6

In terms of his personal season he'd be at round 16/17 with the physical work he put into his fight

Haven't heard much. Ricky was mentioning possible syndesmosis, which would be bad- weeks. So I guess we'd be waiting for scans if physios haven't pinpointed it by other means yet.

Yes. His knee is cooked mate - no cartilage in it. It’s just bone on bone which takes a toll.

Not enough to keep him out of first grade on that basis alone, no. If there was a will to play him, he'd be playing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this fairly par for the course in terms of medical retirement. Club knows a guy is busted - and by busted, I mean they're shot regardless. Club does everything they can to treat any outstanding issues the player may have, which would be fairly common and normal for a guy with his mileage.

If they treat him and he comes back still below par, they can point to the NRL and say that they've done everything they can with him, but he physically can't go on.

Pretty much. And when they go to the NRL with doctors reports and scans saying the guy has no cartilage left on his knee and it's bone on bone, and there is nothing that can be done and doctors are recommending he hang them up... if nothing changes between now and then, the NRL will then green light his medical retirement.

Im a terrible gambler, which is why i gave it up, but my bet would be that before next year begins, he'll be retired medically

And how does it work moneywise? Does the NRL green light to medically retire mean we still pay him out $1.2m for 2 years that doesn’t hit the cap?

Noting his knee issues were pre his last contract signing I’d hope some questions were asked of those involved in recommending and agreeing it.
