Canberra Raiders hooker Tom Starling is free to train and play round one

Tom Starling had six of seven charges dropped by NSW police at Gosford Local Court on Thursday, following his arrest at a Central Coast restaurant last December. The 22-year-old entered a not guilty plea to the remaining charge of resisting arrest which will be next heard on March 11, the same day the 2021 season kicks off.

He will be permitted to continue training with Canberra and be available for round one selection according to the NRL. He is not subject to the no fault stand down policy.

I was born and raised in rural NSW, at a time and place where Aussie "Jim Crow"laws were routinely enforced. No drinking with whites in pub bars, no swimming in public pools, restricted areas in picture theatres, etc. Seeing aboriginal kids and older people treated the way Curtis Scott and, seemingly, Tom Starling have been treated was a commonplace. Except charges were NEVER dropped.

Seems that NSW Police have improved in one small way. They are no longer racist in who they decide to fit up.

Only difference between the two of us was colour of our skin.

Actually I’d forgotten about my good mate who’s very dark skinned due to his distanced Greek ancestry and his summer work as a pool lifeguard. He was arrested for quietly urinating behind a tree one afternoon, but when starting the paperwork and he answered that he wasn’t Aboriginal, the police quickly apologised, laughed the incident off and let him go immediately. They even gave him a food voucher for dinner and a coffee at a nearby cafe.

Another one I had myself at 17 was being stopped by the police for underage drinking outside Cooleman Court and they were going to seriously pursue it. They then realised that I’d played men’s grade cricket against them and had actually cleaned them up in a recent grand final we’d won.

They then talked cricket, told me not to do it again and let me go. Didn’t even mention it when we next crossed paths on the cricket field.

Even in Canberra I’ve seen Police deal with the identical situation completely different depending on whether the kids were public school Kambah students or private school inner north kids.

Only because they’re concerned how a wealthier and connected Dad would react.

I don't at all doubt your reflection on the cops, but I will point out that their are precisely no Inner North private schools. apart from the Boys Grammar kinder thing in Campbell. They are all in south canberra, or radford in bruce, or burgmann in gunghalin.

The ladies of Merici College will be outraged they were not included in your round of of potential police beating miscreants.

I forgot the Catholic ones.... and of course you know the traditional name for Merici - as used even by those who attended...

The culture issues are clearly driven from the top.

There's no wonder this stuff happens when you consider that Mick Fuller has previously told the media that limiting police powers would create a “generation of kids that have no respect for authority” and said young people should have “a little bit of fear” of police. He's also the guy that falsely blamed the Melbourne COVID outbreaks on BLM protests.

It's no wonder those officers on the wrong side of the equation feel empowered to behave the way they do.
