Canberra Raiders sign Albert Hopoate on one year deal
Albert Hopoate linked to Canberra Raiders
Albert Hopoate and his management toured Canberra’s state of the art training facilities on Monday. Raiders recruitment boss Peter Mulholland confirmed the visit and said the ACT club was interested in the rising back and would initiate further talks during the week.
“He came down to have a look. We are interested in any young player that has talent and potential and Albert is certainly one of those players. He was the outstanding player in his group coming through,” Mulholland said.

Not entirely sure about this one. The Sea Eagles have let him go for a reason. I’d like be certain why...
Re: Canberra Raiders linked to Albert Hopoate
You never know GE. There could be any number of reasons, he could of been asked to take a pay cut, could have been annoyed at being unable to crack first grade etc. Ive never seen him play but he obviously is talented... if he comes with the right attitude and cheap then it seems like a good signing to me

Aligns with what i was suggesting above.. seems to be pretty big wraps for a 19 year old.. somewhat concerned an that he has suffered 2 acls.

Re: Canberra Raiders linked to Albert Hopoate
Clearly he and his dad have cracked the **** about not getting a game at Manly. The reality is he will be far from a walk up start here so the obvious question is how will they handle that?
The flip side is he could be a very good player.

Re: Canberra Raiders linked to Albert Hopoate
He's had huge raps on him. Double ACL tears have prevented him showing anything in 1st grade so far. Didn't do much in his cameos this year.
Realistically its a low risk, high reward play if we sign him.

I think with young players it’s important to have a mix of homegrown and imported. Having only homegrown players means pecking orders that have existed since early juniors aren’t as easily challenged, whereas a couple of outsiders really mixes it up.
I also think some young footy players need a shake-up to ignite the passion they require to reach the next level. Albert has clearly been a star throughout his junior career and comes from an NRL family so he might be inspired to prove himself.
Double ACL is a worry but I always revert to my faith in Mulholland.
Re: Canberra Raiders linked to Albert Hopoate
He was pretty ordinary what I saw of him last year, but it takes a long time to get back to 100% after an ACL. A guy like Hodgson can get away with it somewhat, but a power back, reliant on speed and footwork will take much longer. I think he's worth the gamble, at the right price.

Re: Canberra Raiders linked to Albert Hopoate
2020 was the least amount of football I’ve watched in years so I really can’t speak on his foray into first grade. ACL injuries are a killer as we know and all of the reserve players came in with no footy under their belt so those 2 doubled = a forgive to use a racing term.
It would be a mistake to sign him on anything other than bottom dollar and you’d need a medical and to have a look at him but he’s the sort of player to take a punt on imo.

So who are the guys we are looking at as possible squad wingers in this untried category? Train and trial guys?

Key difference between the two. Teddy went to the Roosters. Zillman went to the Titans. That club has brought down better players than him.I'm Bate Man wrote: ↑December 1, 2020, 10:14 pmLook at how Teddy turned out after blowing knees! Under 100k for the year apparently
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2020
For that price you can't argue with it. He'd be decent depth at worst and potentially a good FG player if he stays on deck fitness wise.
What's his best position?

Albert Hopoate signs with Canberra Raiders on one year deal
Albert Hopoate has put aside brotherly love to join a premiership force in the Canberra Raiders on a cut-price deal. The exciting fullback, wing or centre has agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth under $100,000 to move to the nation’s capital under coach Ricky Stuart.
“I really like that Albert has taken the challenging decision over the more familiar decision to play at the same club as his brother,’’ Ricky Stuart said. “He’s a very talented football player and I’m looking forward to having him.’’

Presumably at that money it is a development deal?
Yet another one available for Jersey Flegg. That could be some side.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign Albert Hopoate on one year deal
I see this very much in the Ryan James category, not risk on our part.
Worst case, you have decent depth on the cheap.
Best case, you have an origin potential player - might be an overstatement here - but the Jr wraps on him were large.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign Albert Hopoate on one year deal
Given minimum salary next year is $115,000, even after allowing for the loss of the past month... maybe six weeks by the time it is settled... it can't be a top 30 spot. The club could have early indications about changes to the cap rules (minimum salaries) I guess. Development or Flegg I guess, probably almost certainly the former.
Re: Canberra Raiders sign Albert Hopoate on one year deal
Question will be Matt whether he will be long term for us. For him to be he probably needs to have an ok year. If he is poor we won’t offer him another contract, if he is very good I suspect he will look for a bigger pay day elsewhere.
Having said that, we won’t get a better player for $100k.

ACL rehab far advanced these days. Formerly very few came back from one let alone two. It will be good for the other youngsters to compare themselves with a youngster of talent looking to overcome adversity. Welcome Albert.

Re: Canberra Raiders sign Albert Hopoate on one year deal
Win/win scenario. For Raiders he's on a squad filler deal so there's no cap baggage. For Hoppa Jnr he's joining a team where there's outside back spots up for grabs. He can earn a shot if he performs. Plenty of upside for both parties.
