For all this hyping up of Bateman, I must say he has actually been kind of anonymous in the big games over the last couple of years. In our last 4 finals games, I can't remember him doing much apart from being on the end of the BJ inside pass.
If there ever was a time for JB to step up and cement himself as a Raiders favourite, it definitely is now.

We have been cruising for the last month or so; hope we can find a couple more gears on Friday night. I'm worried if Raps plays centre; he seems lost in defence.
It's a simple game; tackle, back-up, pass, hold the ball! What did I say? "Hold the bloody ball!!"

Actually he was one of our best in that Melbourne game that got us into the prelim, so can't agree there at all. The rest of the time I agree he was solid without being at his barnstorming best.Mickey_Raider wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 10:00 am For all this hyping up of Bateman, I must say he has actually been kind of anonymous in the big games over the last couple of years. If Cronk had not hit Papalii off the ball Bateman probably puts Papalii in for a try in the gf
If I recall correctly not like I'll ever watch that game again lol

I'm not saying he put in stinkers or anything like that. But as a player often lauded as being a winner, I think we need him to be more than solid if we are going to go all the way this year.

For the 2016 prelim I stayed at the Pullman on the park and the players did too. After the game I met most of the players in the bar area than I went down to crown in a cab with big Shannon. He met up with Elliot and bj who were already drinking and playing the pokies. I think that's when the tank started to empty...
Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
watched that incident a few times, if papa catches it first cronk wasn't going to be in front enough to drag him down. That split second would have been enough to put papa throughPete Cash wrote:If Cronk had not hit Papalii off the ball Bateman probably puts Papalii in for a try in the gf

Simple fact about Bateman is since he came he has played 32 games for us - we have won 24 of them. He has missed 15 games (13 through injury and was rested in the last game of each season) - we have won 7 of them.Azza wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 10:51 amActually he was one of our best in that Melbourne game that got us into the prelim, so can't agree there at all. I don't know about cruising?? Not playing the full 80 though which could hurt us against a team like the Roosters. I agree, their kicking in particular was absolutely pinpoint. Their forwards on paper are strong, Talakai is a beast, Rudolph etc, and they muscled up. They're not the whole package and that's why they came 8th but they've got their strong pointspickles wrote: ↑October 6, 2020, 2:32 pmCredit where it is due. The Sharks played out of their skin in the first half and completely outplayed us and out enthused us in every element of the game. They generated repeat sets while we compounded our problems with unforced errors. We will definitely need to be a lot better but there were also some positive signs. Once our halves got involved they really made things happen which is a good sign!

Tapping into his potential: Joe Tapine 100
When Joe Tapine joined the club from Newcastle as 21-year-old with a handful of NRL games under his belt, there was plenty of pressure. Not just from those outside the club but teammates as well. Now he's set to play his 100th game for the club.
“When I came, Josh Papalii was mocking me a bit about being on alright money and when the boys start saying that you feel a bit more pressure but the pressure didn’t really faze me that much,” Tapine said. “I like pressure, it makes me perform better.”

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad champing at bit for chance to take down Chooks
Last year's grand final loss to the Sydney Roosters left Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad with a gaping wound - one he believes won't heal until the Canberra Raiders break their 26-year premiership drought.
"There's a little bit of that each time we've played the Roosters this year to be honest," Nicoll-Klokstad said. "They got us there in the grand final and that burn from losing against them won't go until we get another opportunity to hopefully win one.

Raiders keen to target Teddy together in sudden-death semi
Towering bombs and hunting in packs are two strategies the Raiders will employ to contain livewire James Tedesco in Friday night's sudden-death semi-final against the Sydney Roosters.
"He's a big game player and someone that we'll be watching closely this week in video, we'll probably try to take that running game away from him," Whitehead said. "Whether that's putting up some high kicks so we can catch him as he catches the ball. If you're going to go get him you've got to stay as a team."

Nick Cotric determined to leave Canberra Raiders with NRL premiership
Nick Cotric knows one slip up against the Sydney Roosters in Friday's sudden-death semi-final could be all it takes to draw the curtain on his time at the Green Machine.
"It was definitely a tough decision, I'm just looking to finishing on a high note and doing the best I can here," Cotric said. "It's such a great club and a great bunch of boys too, so it would be good to finish on a high."

Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
I reckon Sticky has gone with size and FG experience in persisting with Rapa in the right center spot. Injury and/or inexperience has depleted Sticky's center options. No doubt he would have loved to have had either Scott or Oldfield available, but it is not to be. I was at the game last week and Rapa is aggressive as a center which is something I did not see as well when I watched the TV replay on Kayo later on. Rapa is a winger doing his bit for the team by playing center. I reckon he and Morris will have a very physical encounter on Friday night.Canberra Milk wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 12:47 pmI don't know about cruising?? Too much at stake to not start with our best 17 against a side known to start fast.
10. Lui 11. Young.

Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
The aggression comes through on TV, in attack and defence. He just bounces off and doesn't stick enough to be that aggressive as a centre in defence. It leaves holes that are much more easily exploited than even a winger (who can be saved by a sideline).RedRaider wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 4:42 pmI reckon Sticky has gone with size and FG experience in persisting with Rapa in the right center spot. Guys who play aggressive D as a centre need size like Joey (+10kg heavier), or a technique and agility like Jack so they hit hard and are almost never beaten. Rapana lacks all 3 of those so needs to be a smarter centre in defence. Period.
Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
He doesn't seem to use his shoulders/chest much and drive into the tackles. Very upright and reliant mostly on his arms to try and affect the tackle, which seems to lead to so many weak attempts. He's certainly got enough size to be effective, that's not an issue.

Seems an appropriate enough place to post the question. Rugby League Guru just posted on Insta asking if the Roosters and Raiders did a Keary / Wighton swap, which club would win out?

Yep - agree.
Jack's got buckets of talents, always has, is clearly far more gifted physically, and has come a long way in recent times. Still, he's not in the same league as Keary.
Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Depends on what you need. Keary stronger organiser, passer, reads game better which leads to better decision making. Wighton a much stronger runner and defender. I'd say with very low confidence that we would win out of the swap.Fuifui Bradbrad wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 6:40 pm Seems an appropriate enough place to post the question. Not sure if it's a good idea to go to this game... another loss to these cheats could result in some radical behaviour!
Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Our defence has kept us in a lot of games this year where have held teams for the first 40 despite being under pressure and steam rolled them in the second half. I don’t think we can afford to have to chase the roosters down too hard though. A try or under for sure but more than that is tough to make up in a big game.Northern Raider wrote:Let's not overlook that our defense was top notch. I always think of Keary and Cleary is being similar type of player, the unflashy organisers. When GW came to Canberra I wondered how it would work, cos both he and Wighton seemed to be more running halves. But Wighton has the big boot that George lacks (his long kicking game is not the best, but short and medium kicking very good). I think Cleary and Luai are easily as good (if not better) than the Roosters pair. Check out the try assist stats! But they are all very good players of course.

Yeah, but what about right now? That's as compelling as the Fox Sports analysis of Bateman's contribution prior to the Cronulla final, where they showed 5 or 6 snippets of his best footy, 4 of which were plays he made during 2019.Bay53 wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 12:32 pmSimple fact about Bateman is since he came he has played 32 games for us - we have won 24 of them. We all know what he is capable of. I want to see him do it tomorrow night.
BTW in the last 2 seasons Josh Hodgson has played 33 games and we have won 19 of them (58%) and he has missed 15 games and we have won 13 of those (87%) so by that logic the biggest winning factor in our team is not having Josh Hodgson on the field. There is no doubt Bateman was a huge factor for us last year, not so much this year IMO.
Re: 2020 Finals Week 2 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
I think both teams would lose out tbh. While it might be ugly at times Jack Wighton and how he plays at five-eighth is the embodiment of the current Canberra team and far and away the most important player. I think Wighton would stunt the Roosters attack post Cronk and Keary wouldn't cope with the rough and tumble role that is being Canberra's five-eighth that well either.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart’s hilarious response to "ref feud"
Back-to-back premiers the Sydney Roosters have won 11 out of 15 matches under Ashley Klein over the course of the last three seasons including the 2018 grand final. Compare this to the Canberra Raiders who have won only six out of 12 over the same period and four of those six losses were by four points or less.
“I’m not buying into it. I’ll get the blame for this story,” the Raiders coach said. Then he started laughing and hung up the phone.

Old man's sacrifice, cross-country plans for George Williams’ Canberra Raiders rise
George Williams' old man once quit his job to ensure his son got a fair crack at his rugby league dream, and now he's threatening to drive the Nullarbor if the English half can guide Canberra back to an NRL decider.
"He moved out here about 18 months ago to work over in Perth," said George."It's strange, I've not been able to see him since I've been here. But he said if we make the final he'll find a way to get there. He's threatening to drive across the country if he has to."

Williams old man needs to learn NOT to do a Fensom or Rapana and publicly promote via the media the approach you plan to take to bypass the authorities.

I must have missed when they did that. What did they say?

From memory we had them completely shot out wide, at least a 5 on 2 overlap past Cronk. If we played out the back rather than short to Papalii we score easily.bonehead wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 11:44 amwatched that incident a few times, if papa catches it first cronk wasn't going to be in front enough to drag him down. If I recall correctly not like I'll ever watch that game again lol

Similar to Tapine’s try last week v Sharks. It was good that he beat like 6 players to score under the posts, but we had them shot out wide.
I’m not a fan of the (at best) 50/50 crash ball play when there’s a 95-5 chance we score out wide untouched.

i see where you comming from, but he just has that last drop in the tank attitude, and give him credit he just scored the 2nd most important/unbelievable/ miraculous try in the last 25years against Melb 2019.Mickey_Raider wrote: ↑October 7, 2020, 10:00 am For all this hyping up of Bateman, I must say he has actually been kind of anonymous in the big games over the last couple of years. In our last 4 finals games, I can't remember him doing much apart from being on the end of the BJ inside pass.
If there ever was a time for JB to step up and cement himself as a Raiders favourite, it definitely is now.
hard to be replaced but if anyone will be close to replace him in terms of grunt attitude I think its Hudson Young

Totally agree. I think it comes back to the level of skill in our spine. Lacking a good pass especially a cut out pass when needed. A big area that Wighton and CNK need to work on. Unfortunately I just don't think Wighton has it in him naturally which is why he doesn't do it consistently enough.. A bit like his kicking game which is also still inconsistent.Finchy wrote: ↑October 8, 2020, 9:14 amFrom memory we had them completely shot out wide, at least a 5 on 2 overlap past Cronk. In addition to the Tapine one, Wighton also butchered an unusually massive overlap late in the second half, where he seemed to have almost too much time and ended up passing forward to Croker
Ref is Ashley Klein, apparently Roosters have around 75% win rate with him, and us only 50%. Something I've noticed about him is that he likes blowing penalties. That could help us or hurt us. In recent weeks at times we've struggled to get out of our territory so a penalty here or there might help us with that
