I’m interested in this, Sleek. I certainly see the captaincy qualities in Elliott and am a massive fan. Two questions though:
1) Don’t you think it would be a huge deal to take the captaincy off Hodgo and particularly Croker?
2) When did we do it before?
1. No. The captaincy is a privilege, not a right. In Croker's case, I think he's had a very long run in the position with sfa success outside of last year when he shared the job with Hodgson. I'd also keep both on as vice-captains of the side so it's not like they wouldn't still have major input into what's going on. I see it as a move that recognises Whitehead's on-field leadership qualities that were obvious to anyone who watched the game today.
2. In 1989, before we won our first premiership.
1. The thing is Elliott has been around long enough to have already been given the captaincy, including when Hodgo got it. Makes it a bit odd to do it now.
I also think you’re underestimating what demoting the two current captains means. It’ll probably happen some time as I think at least Croker will play for as long as he can rather than retire like Mal. I don’t think they deserve to be demoted now.
2. Bit different to compare giving the captaincy to peak Mal Menginga over end-of-his-career Dean Lance to giving the captaincy to Elliot who is older than both the current captains and no guarantee of outlasting either of them.
I reckon Elliott, like Papa and Sia, has a leadership role without needing to be captain. No need to make a big statement.

1. I think you're underestimating the character of Croker and Hodgson. They will go along with what's best for the team.
2. You don't award the captaincy based on who is going to outlast who. You award it on the basis of who's the right man for the job at the time. My thoughts are for next year that's likely to be Whitehead but let's see what happens in the rest of this year first.
