He showed more try finishing instinct/ability than our rookie winger or Rapana on that side all year. It was a nice debut. Got outside Semi twice with little room to move. Either he's a decent finisher or Semi is a poor 1:1 defender or both.

I know league fans are aware of the 'random souths guy" but is it just me who has noticed raiders jerseys at neutral games for the last 20 yrs including the current gc game..

He was the only one. He never picks us so I asked the forum was there any history with Ricky. GE said he used to play with us in the juniors !
He also debuted and played under Sticky at the Roosters

Solid win and good to see some attack finally starting to click, especially down the left where we have had a bit more consistency. Credit to Valemi from turning around a horror first half and doing much better in the second.
Good to keep the Dragons scoreless in the second half and with the exception of 2 bad decisions from Valemi our defence was on point.

We are still not quite there but 2 more games to work out the kinks and hopefully jag a top 4 spot. It's always going to be tough to win a comp without your best hooker but with a bit of luck we can give the finals a decent shake!

Oh well. Two points, day game on a dry track and scored some points. Beats the 5 brutal, rainy mudslogs we gruelled through mid-season. Can't hurt at all going forward.

2020 Rd 18 V Dragons: Game Day

Post by The Nickman »

First time we’ve made the finals two seasons in a row since 2004, hey?

That’s mighty impressive seeing as the whole team is garbage, our captain lacks leadership, we’re unable to score points, our backs are useless and our best half is just a glorified centre... just incredible stuff

I’m still furious about today’s game... can’t BELIEVE we weren’t better

How dare you enjoy watching your team win a lot more then they lose for a very long time!

And I hope you didn’t enjoy making a GF and not winning!

Just imagine being super critical of your team when your bottom 8, then being even more critical when your a top 5 team. Why bother?

You sound like you accept it, my anxiety can't accept the last 20 years of being not good enough. We have international players now, origin players and proven depth with our young blokes, we should expect to give this a shake.
And I wasn't impressed in the first 20 minutes today

We really should be targeting average players from bottom 8 teams to upgrade our squad.

It's not just the players playing. 3 important cogs in Hodgo, Horsburgh and Guler have done nothing this year. Why are we paying them? Papalii didn't even come on in the 2nd. Myth!

He really hasn't. Pretty sure you're going to be quite lonely pushing that too.

I have no idea what makes a successful team? Lol. You mock Craig Bellamy's ability as a coach every chance you get and think talent just appears and develops out of nowhere, almost through divinity. Any point you make about 'what makes a successful team' is completely invalid from that point forward.

You seem to think that being a contrarian gives you a good footy brain - it doesn't. It's most likely just a ruse for lacking a deeper understanding of the game, and having been around the traps long enough, I know that's exactly what you lack.

I'm not being contrarian at all. Like many others, I just don't agree with what you're saying.

As far as Craig Bellamy goes, I've never said he's a poor coach or can't coach. Most people (like yourself) just don't want to actually listen to what I'm saying about him and his apparent ability to create elite talent out of thin air. He gets great, consistent, results out of the talent he works with. Not all coaches can do that. He's also only won 2 premierships with said talent in 17 years, which is a highly unremarkable achievement.

And couldn’t get any decent contact on Bateman for his try and jammed in on Croker to allow Valemei to score his.

Also got rattled by our forwards in one his couple of unremarkable hit-ups.

He made two nice finishes and is definitely an exciting prospect but that game wasn’t noteworthy.

Enjoyable Saturday afternoon game. Usual thoughts:

* Young and Tapine were immense. The new, quicker game suits them due to their combination of size and late footwork. They don’t get pushed back very often. I continue to be impressed by Lui - that effort to save the try in the second half was special. He has gone from fringe first grade prop to one of the first names on the team sheet. Stoked for him. In general, our forward pack is an excellent mix of work rate, skill, footwork and solid defence. Couldn’t be happier with it.
* Valemei came back well from his poor start, I can see what Ricky sees in him. Usually I would say a Winger isn’t at fault for tries in the corner, but on both tries we had actually numbered up very well, and they should have been covered. It’s all raw but the fundamentals are there for a solid first grade winger. He drops out with Scott back, and Oldfield is returning the following week to provide depth. It is important to remember he is 4th choice, with Simonsson, Oldfield and Scott injured. Let’s not be too harsh.
* Williams and Wighton are building their combination nicely. Both have a decent number of try involvements, and they are starting to understand each other’s strengths. We should continue to use Wighton’s mid and long range kicking game, with Williams taking care of kicks in the red zone. Havilii has kicked nicely a couple of times from dummy half, too.
* Still a lot of different combinations possible for the finals, but if it looks like we are going to play the Sharks twice in a row, and that is certain before the kickoff of our final round game, I think we need to rest a lot of players, a la the final round last year. If the game makes no difference to our position, we should look to rest Whitehead, Papalii, Tapine and possibly even Wighton (though I doubt Ricky will want to rest him). It’s been a long season with no breaks, and if we are going to give this a shake from outside the Top 4, we will need a lot of our squad to have the week off leading in.
