2020 Rd 14 V Broncos: Game Day

Canberra Raiders V Brisbane Broncos
Saturday August 15 7:35pm
Canberra Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Morning fog. Shower or two. Cloudy. Very high (90 per cent) chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon. The chance of a thunderstorm from the afternoon. Light winds. Chance of any rain: 90 per cent. Possible rainfall: 4 to 10 mm Min 6 Max 12

In Round 14, the Raiders return home for a clash with the Brisbane Broncos - a team that will be missing coach, Anthony Seibold, on field coach, Allan Langer and former Raiders forward, Tevita Pangai Jnr, due to breaches of biosecurity protocols.

Last round: 2020 Round 13. Penrith Panthers 28 - Canberra Raiders 12. This match showed where the Canberra Raiders are right now - and that's a step behind the front runners in the competition. The Green Machine was very clearly outclassed in the first half. They showed some character to come back and "win" the second half. But there's no escaping the fact that when Penrith was "on", the Raiders' defence could not contain them - and their attack struggled to make an impression. The Panthers were simply outstanding, and the Raiders were simply out-gunned.

More on Round 13: As I saw it

Team news: The Raiders have named an unchanged line up. Hooker, Siliva Havili left the field in the clash with the Panthers with a triceps injury - but he's been cleared to play. Michael Oldfield will drop out of the extended squad, after having surgery on a broken thumb on Friday.

As mentioned, Broncos head coach Anthony Seibold and forward Tevita Pangai Jnr will be in quarantine and will miss the match. Veteran assistant coach Peter Gentle will take the reins in the absence of Seibold. Ben Te'o replaces Pangai, while Jordan Riki will make his debut off the bench. Cory Paix come onto the bench, while Issac Luke drops to the reserves list. Joe Ofahengaue will play his 100th NRL match. Since the teams were named, Broncos bench forward Matt Lodge has been ruled out for the season, with a fractured leg. Winger Xavier Coates (knee) has also been ruled out after being helped from the training field on Thursday.

Late changes: With Michael Oldfield breaking his thumb, the NRL has given the Raiders permission to include Harley Smith-Shields on the reserves list, joining Matt Frawley in the squad of 19. Sam Williams and Kai O'Donnell drop out, along with Oldfield.

For the Broncos, former Raider Rhys Kennedy replaces Matt Lodge on the bench, while Jesse Arthars replaces Xavier Coates on the wing. Jordan Kahu has been brought into the Broncos squad of 19, joining Ethan Bullemor on the reserves list.

History: The Raiders have won 20 of 53 matches against the Brisbane Broncos, with one draw. That’s just a 38 per cent win rate. Until the Round 6 clash last year, Canberra was on a six game losing streak against the Broncos. They have only won three of the past 10 matches. The Raiders have also only won 13 of 25 matches against Brisbane at Canberra Stadium, drawing one. The Raiders won the only other home match played between the clubs - at Seiffert Oval in 1989, in front of a record crowd of 18,272 people. In the only meeting between the two teams in 2019, the Raiders produced a narrow, 26-22, victory at Canberra Stadium.

2019 Round 6: Canberra Raiders V Brisbane Broncos

2018 Round 16: Canberra Raiders V Brisbane Broncos

Form: Raiders: LWWWL
Broncos: WLLLL

The Broncos are on a four game losing streak, with their most recent victory coming over the last placed Bulldogs (26-8). It is their only win since the resumption of the season in Round 3. They suffered a 28-10 loss to the Rabbitohs in their last outing - and have also produced recent losses to the Sharks (36-26), Storm (46-8) and Tigers (48-0). Before last weekend's loss to the Panthers, the Raiders had won three in a row, beating the Roosters (24-20), Rabbitohs (18-12) and Cowboys (14-12).

Betting: The Raiders are $1.10 favourites, while the Broncos are paying $7.00. The Broncos have a massive 18.5 points start in the line betting. The Broncos' odds have lengthened since opening.

Stat attack: This is a battle between fifth (Raiders) and 15th (Broncos) on the ladder. The Raiders' attacking record in 2020 is poor, ranking 11th for tries scored (40 tries). But the Broncos' record is even worse (30), with only the Bulldogs scoring fewer tries (27). The Broncos rank last in the competition for runs, running metres gained, kick return metres, try assists and line engagements. The two teams are almost level for line breaks (Raiders 41, Broncos 40) - and the Broncos have produced more tackle breaks and offloads. The Broncos are last for general play passes, the Raiders second last. The Raiders are close to last for offloads - only the Rabbitohs have posted fewer offloads.

The Raiders' defence has been their comparative advantage in this competition. But their record has been slipping. They now rank fifth in the NRL for the fewest points (16 per game) and tries conceded (33 in total) - behind the Storm, Eels, Roosters and Panthers. However, no team has conceded more points (31 per game) and tries (69 in total) than the Broncos. The Broncos rank second last for running metres and line breaks conceded. The Broncos rank also second for most ineffective tackles (Raiders 13th). The Raiders have missed more tackles than the Broncos this year. But remember... missed tackles don't get recorded if you're not attempting tackles.

Ricky Stuart would no doubt prefer the Raiders had a better record with their discipline in 2020. They concede almost six penalties per game (ranked fifth) and make almost 12 errors per game (ranked third). No team, however, has conceded more penalties than Brisbane.

2020 Season record: Raiders 8 and 5 (5th, +27)
Broncos 3 and 10 (15th, -223)

Attack: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 11th on tries scored
Broncos 14 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 15th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 16 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 5th on tries conceded
Broncos 31 points and 5 tries conceded per match, ranked 16th on tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 50 per cent, Broncos 46 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 79 per cent, Broncos 77 per cent

Running: Raiders 1647 running metres from 187 runs (14 dummy half runs), 148 kick return metres, 550 post contact metres per match
Broncos 1456 running metres from 157 runs (11 dummy half runs), 131 kick return metres, 532 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 29, Broncos 31 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Broncos 3 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Broncos 2 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Broncos 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 8, Broncos 10 per match

Kicking: Raiders 642 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Broncos 524 kicking metres from 18 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 366 made, 29 missed, 14 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency
Broncos 358 made, 27 missed, 18 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1484, Broncos 1575 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Broncos 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Broncos 7 per match

Penalties awarded: Raiders 5, Broncos 4 per match

Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 5, Broncos 4 per match

Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 5, Broncos 4 per match

Key match-ups:

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Darius Boyd Darius Boyd lost the Broncos captaincy at the start of 2020 and has played at centre for most of the season. But he was shifted to fullback in the Round 12 game against the Sharks - and since then, he's produced five try assists. Whenever the Raiders play the Broncos, Boyd seems to invariably set up a try or two with the sweep play. In 2020, Boyd has one try, six try assists, 21 tackle breaks, four line breaks, and averaged 78 running metres and 17 tackles per game. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad returned to the field last weekend, after spending one weekend on the sidelines due to a compound dislocation of his little finger. He looked a bit shaky early, particularly under the high ball. But he went on to score two tries, run for 257 metres and make nine tackle breaks. In 2020 overall, he has scored six tries, produced two try assists, 45 tackle breaks and three tackle breaks. Boyd has the better ball playing abilities, but CNK is a great runner. He ranks 11th in the NRL for average run metres.

Josh Papalii and Payne Haas Josh Papalii is, in my view, the best prop in the game. But 20 year old Payne Haas is already challenging for that title. In 2020, Haas has averaged 179 running metres from 16 hit ups, 82 post contact metres and 44 tackles per game. He's also posted 44 tackle breaks, 20 offloads and a 94 per cent tackle efficiency rate. Papalii has really lifted in the past six weeks, but he didn't have his best game against the Panthers. This season he's scored four tries, averaged 159 running metres from 15 hit ups and 60 post contact metres per game. He has 26 tackle breaks and nine offloads to his name. He almost never makes and error or misses a tackle. He has a 96 per cent tackle efficiency rate. Should be a great clash.

Elliott Whitehead and David Fifita David Fifita is the $3 million man, after recently accepting a mammoth three year deal from the Gold Coast Titans. Last weekend, he made his return to the field for the first time since the resumption of the NRL season - and scored a try, ran for 118 metres, 50 post contact metres and made 20 tackles. In three appearances, he's scored two tries, made two line breaks, and averaged 141 running metres and 26 tackles per game. He officially weighs in at 107kgs, but commentators suggest it's more like 115kgs these days. Raiders second rower Elliott Whitehead will have his hands full. He's sometimes a quiet achiever, but always carries a big defensive load. And his attacking and ball playing skills are under-appreciated by many. He's scored four tries in season 2020. He's also made seven line breaks and seven offloads and produced two try assists. He averages 80 running metres and 33 tackles per match.

Our tip: The Raiders are deserved favourites in this match, but it is a danger game. The signs are there that Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold has lost the dressing sheds. They may respond well to stand in coach Peter Gentle. And they've got to win sometime. The "old" Raiders did not respond well to favouritism, and they were susceptible to an upset. They have largely avoided that in the past couple of years - but they do still tend to play to the level of their opposition. They'll need to be very careful to avoid any sort of complacency in this game. The Raiders forward pack will need to lift on its performance last weekend against the Panthers. The Broncos have a young forward pack, but the likes of Payne Haas and David Fifita can be very damaging. Those players are among the best in the game. However, if the Raiders forwards can lay the platform, the Green Machine should be too good. Raiders by 6-12.

What they're saying:

Ricky Stuart on Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad: "He had a massive game, he did that much work. Not many times you get a fullback at the forefront carrying a load like that. We've got to get some others coming in and helping Charnze because he really carried us [Saturday] night and I need other people carrying us. I don't need our fullback carrying us."

Oldfield broke his thumb at training. That'd be the reason for the switch.

Bonehead was probably thinking that if a back wasn’t in doubt, the Raiders wouldn’t have got special permission to include an outside back in the final 19. Given there wasn’t one left on the reserves list.

No confidence leading into this game. It feels like one of those rounds.

Roosters got comprehensively beat, Warriors almost beat the Panthers and the Eels lost to the dragons.

Game Day Raiderfolks!

A bit nervous about this one. It has "ambush" written all over it. Hopefully I am wrong.

While we clearly have an advantage in experience and raw talent, I suspect the Broncos will be a lot more disciplined than they have been.

All I've hoped for this season is for us to have a really solid opening 20 minutes. Hasn't happened yet.

Maybe today.

Broncos discipline is not good.
Concede plenty of penalties.

Jack is due.
So too is Cotric.

Fingers crossed for no injuries.

I agree with all and sundry that I am very nervous about this match. I live in QLD and have thoroughly enjoyed every Donkey capitulation this season and I just hope it continues.

Even our wins lack a certain satisfaction. I just want us to dominate a match from the first minute to the 80th in a comprehensive display like used to occur every time we played the Tigpies.

Can’t agree with Ricky that everyone thinks we are going to win by 40.

We barely have 40 points in us across 3 games, let alone 1.

Yeah - no injuries esp to our key players is much more important than a 40 point flogging. Look at the Roosters - this competition is the survival of the fittest. We can still go on a run and get top 4. Eels are not in form and I back us in a semi against them. Melbourne also hold no fears for me - we should have won at GIO but for Whitehead's no try and the stupid video referee. One game at a time. Jack needs to just run straight at Croft tonight, he won't stop him

Glad for your optimism. I think so as well. Everyone writing us off, they think Roosters will get top 4, Phil Gould said we have only 5% of winning the comp on twitter, the fat toad tipped us at the beginning of the year. When he tips us we tend to lose, like 2016 preliminary final against Storm was supposed to be a sure win for us, same as the Newcastle game this year. We play better when we are not favourites

Roosters got comprehensively beat, Warriors almost beat the Panthers and the Eels lost to the dragons.

Feels like one of those rounds
Law of averages is on our side.
It also means we've got an opportunity to make ground on Roosters.

Looking at the radar it might just stop raining by 7.30. I'm not sure how many pairs of sock to wear... But finally that poncho thing might get some use.
