I think we have to be quite physical with Penrith.. starting with Tapine might be something to consider
Re: 2020 Rd 13 V Panthers: Teams and Previews
Massive improvement going to need to be required
But my sense of this footy team is we tend to play up and down to the level of competition.
I think we'll be up for this one and i think we'll be better for CHN and Bateman getting some legs under them and CNK probably back.

With Liva and Lui coming off after short initial stints I'm not that worried about a lighter bench. Young ran for 150m so he's fine in the middle and probably more effective off the bench.
I think we need to start stronger so Tapine gets a start after less minutes against the cows .

Panthers were not very impressive previous 2 weeks against Cowboys and Titans. Yes, we have to improve on tonight but they also need to maintain their form.

I don't really understand the theory about our attack needing to be on or it will be a long night.
If the panthers are on, it is our defence that needs to be up for it not our attack. If we can put in a massive defensive effort it will give us a good chance to grind out an ugly win. Based on the Panthers form this weeks training should be primarily about defence.

I like that side Dusty. Was it just me or did Tapine seem a bit off the pace last night? He didn't play long minutes (34) so possibly carrying an injury.

I like this team, there are going to be some serious selection headaches if we get some of our troops back, who drops out of this team down the track?
Re: 2020 Rd 13 V Panthers: Teams and Previews
I like the pack rotation for the minute. But when they’re all fit CHN > Young by some margin and Bateman of the 3 beat second rowers is most suited to the middle.
Hopefully CNK is fit meaning Valemei misses out.

Re: 2020 Rd 13 V Panthers: Teams and Previews
Mainly because we were only good enough to win by 2 and score 14 against a pretty mediocre Cowboys outfit. I don't think it's ludicrous to say the Panthers will throw more attack at us, meaning we're going to have to be better with the chances we have because based on form Penrith have been taking their chances. Yes our defence is strong but I don't think it's unreasonable that our attack really needs some finetuning.Raidersteve wrote: ↑August 2, 2020, 6:14 amI don't really understand the theory about our attack needing to be on or it will be a long night.

I think both Bateman and CHN and Scott will be better for the run last night and that will help our attack . We have enough points in us if we can shut them down with defence. I'm no coach but based on the Panthers attack at the moment I would be spending a lot more time during the week tightening up our defence particularly in the middle than I would on attack but that is just me.Raider47 wrote: ↑August 2, 2020, 9:22 amMainly because we were only good enough to win by 2 and score 14 against a pretty mediocre Cowboys outfit. Re: 2020 Rd 13 V Panthers: Teams and Previews
I have no doubt that we will bring the business to the Penrith game.
Whether that is enough to win against a red hot team at the top of the ladder, I’m not sure. But as I learnt from last year, I don’t think it matters greatly. As I’ve said before, it’s about knowing you’re in with a shout when the whips are cracking in the finals.
I am quite confident that our grinding style, our history of playing up or down to opposition and our finals experience from last year means we will be up to our eyeballs in the fight come finals time. And that won’t change by being beaten by the Panthers.
I will say though that the manner of a loss is important. Obviously if we get steamrolled by 40 then it probably creates some doubts. But I don’t think that will happen.
We were apparently going to lose by 50 against the roosters following very underwhelming efforts and we rolled them. We can rise to the ocasión and I believe we will.

Totally agree. We've had a tendency to play to the level of our opposition in recent times. Not necessarily a bad thing provided you win. A lot different to the days when we'd put 50 points on the bottom sides then failed to compete against the top ones.Mickey_Raider wrote: ↑August 2, 2020, 9:43 am I have no doubt that we will bring the business to the Penrith game.

We as fans need to accept this is an ugly grinding team and at our best in those situations. What it's proven this year is the top sides in Storm, Roosters and Eels have really struggled against us. Panthers should be wary of that too, but I sincerely hope they're not.

We have too many great attacking players to just accept that we're a boring grinding team
Penrith will be a good barometer. They play how I want us to play, they have a thirst for scoring, they have good combinations with each other and they're skillful enough to make use of it

We failed to score in the grand final against 12 men and it cost us a comp, so let's not be under the illusion that continuing to be a "grinding" team (ie one with a crap attack) is healthy for us

It was our defence that got us to the GF, and "good enough" attack. Why you wouldn't want to improve that I don't know
Re: 2020 Rd 13 V Panthers: Teams and Previews
The only reason we didnt score because BJ had a moment we all feared he could have but hoped he didnt.Canberra Milk wrote: ↑August 2, 2020, 10:16 am We failed to score in the grand final against 12 men and it cost us a comp, so let's not be under the illusion that continuing to be a "grinding" team (ie one with a crap attack) is healthy for us
But i do agree in general that our attack is going to hamstring us in the finals if we dont improve.
I dont think you can beat the roosters unless you've got 20 points in you at least. Not sure this raiders team has shown it can consistently carve out 3-4 tries in a game

Agree, you don't need to smash teams but you need to be able to hit 20 points with regularity or you're making it very hard for yourselfBotman wrote: I dont think you can beat the roosters unless you've got 20 points in you at least. Unlike others, I have some confidence that CNK will eventually follow his instincts with the ball and become an effective link in our attack. Add a fit Bateman to the equation and I reckon we are incredibly close to racking up a big score on a few teams.
Ultimately it's our defence which gets us in the conversation though.
