Corey Harawira-Naera signs with Raiders to end 2022

Post by LimeGreenMachine »

Three rivals circling sacked Dogs star after shock decision throws a spanner in the works

The Bulldogs have a conundrum on their hands after sacking Corey Harawira-Naera and Jayden Okunbor over the Port Macquarie schoolgirl scandal only to sensationally have the decision overturned at the independent NRL Appeals Committee.

The New Zealand Warriors, St George Illawarra and the Canberra Raiders are believed to have shown an interest in signing Kiwi Test backrower Harawira-Naera.

I reckon the club would be all over this. Use the exemption this year and a better contract moving forward. Young and Bateman to play up the guts if they make it happen.

CHN would be totally worth it just to see cats moral gymnastics.

But purely from a football perspective I'd take both. I think Okunbar has great potential, plus fantastic hair.

Great player with the ball. Has some issues defensively, but I always felt it was more attitude than lack of physical ability. Would allow Young to move into the middle.

Yes that’s exactly what we should be doing imo

This season is just about a wash, if you can use this to help plug a hole for 2021, great

I don't know about the original problem and I don't really care.

As long as he has served his punishment (from the State, not a ridiculous governing body thing) then everyone deserves a second chance.

If a 'crime' committed is bad enough for the rest of the team not to have a player's back, that's an issue for the club to decide on when recruiting.

Other than that, go for it - assuming a player is good enough.

Unfortunately there's a line of thinking that players need to be continually punished beyond the initial sanction.

He committed no crime (and was actually sucked into Okunbor's misgivings which were far more unforgivable) and did nothing a plethora of NRL players don't do every other day. Anyone who thinks overwise is kidding themselves. As if these sought after athletes aren't seeking out 18-19 yr olds for crying out loud.

We've certainly got the means to look at him for next season. One of the better options on the market and would certainly help if he's already available for the remainder of this season.

Yes..they breached NRL's code of conduct and it was embarrassing for both the Bulldogs club and the NRL, but the independent appeals committee have a different view and obviously some people are not going to agree with that decision.
There were other breaches from some high profile players that were illegal, but the guilty parties got off lightly in my opinion.
Their appeal was successful so now we move on.
I think Corey Harawira Naera would be the perfect replacement for John Bateman once he leaves the Raiders nation.

It should be. And the reaction of rugby league fans is only further proof. A massively male fanbase doesn't want to talk about power imbalances, or the creepiness of a grown man going after a schoolgirl (oh, what will they watch for porn then!), or the inherent wrongness of deliberately seeking out girls 7 years younger than themselves - I'm not at all surprised, but it's proof that we still have such a long way to go.

The fact that they were both successful in their appeals should be enough for all of us to realise we probably don’t even have the full story of what even happened. Get off their cases. If they committed a criminal offence they’d be in gaol. They deserve to get on with their careers.

Id love to sign the bloke. He made a mistake, but it certainly doesn't rate as bad a what bj did earlier in his career or what wighton did a couple of years ago. If we took the high moral ground and didn't consider these young adults who have made a poor decision, then youve probably just excluded half of the comp

I think it is unfair to raiderskater to dismiss her concerns in the way some posters have. I think people should be more polite to her. Maybe some posters could consider that she has a very valid, and different perspective on it, and not only because she's female. But perhaps that also gives her an insight on it you don't have.

I'm concerned about the points she raises. I can certainly understand why the NRL and club took the action they did, given the reported facts. I'm also not sure I know the full story. I'm not sure why the appeals body took its decision. I can see there is the potential for double standards, and unreasonable standards when there appears to be no legal wrongdoing.

In any case, we don't even know for sure if the Raiders are interested. It might become more relevant if they confirm their interest.

I don't rate him as highly as most here. Stood out on a poor Dogs team last year but anytime I watched them play he'd come up with some shocking defensive reads.

I don't know enough to talk to the early season incident.

Well put.

There hasn't been as much written about what CHN did as opposed to Okunbor.

I felt sick when I read the article about Okunbor.

Having said that, I have two daughters. And I'm also married to their mum, and value my family highly.

So i come from a different perspective than the majority of NRL fans who only consider this a wonderful redemption story, worthy of imitation.

Agree.

I also have daughters of footy-player-dating age, and not only have they, they might again. I'm not naming any names. But I'm no fan of Okunbor, as a player or a man. CHN, well, I was surprised to hear something about a "schoolteacher" on the news earlier tonight. I'm not sure what the crime might be there. Seems to me that facts have been so scrambled that it's really hard to find a moral position, but in a purely football context only one of these possible signings makes any sense at all - that's Harewira-Naera to be clear. And I respect any fan who says they can't get behind it from a moral viewpoint. Not sure I would be worried come the finals etc etc but I'm certainly not going to say they are wrong.

I'm more concerned about any extra defensive liabilities than some vigilante moralising about someone who has been cleared of any serious wrongdoing.

Well put GE wise words.

As it stands, no illegal activity but a regulatory breach, for which consequences have now been applied.

We can all be the moral police and understandably in this space people’s opinions vary considerably.

But at the end of the day both of these players now are going to play NRL again. Really the question is does our club want to be part of what they bring as a player; a person and a contributor to the culture that exists here and will they value add?

My perspective is CHN should definitely be considered and I’d be disappointed in the club if he wasn’t at least considered.

CHN was a gun when he was at Penrith (killed it in Supercoach) and pretty good at the Dogs. Definitely not a nobody.
