Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart says Sia Soliola could be sidelined for three months

Image

"They're saying three months," Stuart said about how long Soliola would be sidelined. "And Emre Guler will be assessed on Monday once the swelling in his ankle goes down."

Canberra Raiders could go to market to cover mounting injury toll

Sia Soliola has fractured the palate area of his face and he has to wait for the swelling to go down before he can under the knife. He's facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines and could potentially be out for the rest of the 2020 NRL season. The Raiders are hoping Emre Guler does not have a syndesmosis injury and might only be out for 2-4 weeks rather than double that.

Terrifying injury. Hope Sia recovers well.

But yep. We need a signing. I'm sure they've been working on one.

I guess Kai O'Donnel will get his chance.

I was horrified by this image
i showed it to my wife expecting her to be as freaked out as i was... but apparently this is actually not as bad as it looks, it looks to be like a broken face but she (a doctor) seemed to say there is not a lot there to be horrified by.

I was looking at the image and thinking there was a horrific fracture across his entire face but what i was looking at is actually two different bones

I was laughing at Fox League's facebook page for reporting it as a suspected "broken face" on Friday night. Turns out they were right, he literally broke his face. Poor Sia!

Hopefully JJ Collins has kept in shape. If so we should get him back.

We need someone, and fast.

I’m hopeful we’ll get someone a bit better though.

I doubt we'll get anyone from some team's too squad. At least with JJ he's familiar with the team and structure.

I'm not doubting your wife's expert assessment, but can someone explain that x-ray to me then? As far as I'm aware your upper jaw is not supposed to be separated from the rest of the skull like that (like the lower jaw is). Like this image shows, it's all supposed to be one piece.

We still need clarification on this one. The NRL Physio on Twitter said "scans revealed a significant facial fracture" along with that image with the pink circle around what looks like a huge break between his upper jaw (terminology?) and cheek bones. If that apparent break isn't the "significant fracture", I'd love to know what is.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR but I’ve looked into these Le franc fractures (this seems like type 1) and it seems that while it is in theory 1 full bone, it is actually an area that holds a number of plates that are buttressed together. That fracture is at a line of weakness where the palate or roof of the mouth joins the face, and behind the facade is a number of sinus channels etc.

Canberra Raiders veteran Sia Soliola blends humour and KFC ahead of major surgery

Sia Soliola has suffered what's called a Le Fort fracture, with a crack stretching across the skull just above the upper teeth. The X-ray looking like something out of a horror movie.

"The only complication was my previous injury where I fractured my cheekbone, just to take that [plate] out and reattach more plates in," Soliola said. "Basically it's a thing you'd get in a car crash.

Sia Soliola's NRL career at Raiders in doubt

Canberra veteran Iosaia Soliola may have played his final game for the NRL club after confirmation he could miss up to 16 weeks with a facial fracture.

The Raiders on Tuesday announced Soliola would undergo surgery this week, while Emre Guler could also be out for up to 10 weeks with a fractured ankle.

Hopefully sia makes it back on to the park especially if this is his last season. The guy deserves to go out on his terms and get a proper send off. Sia converting our final try in the 80th minute of the grand final when are up by 10 would be good

Nah, he scores the try. Like that runaway 2016 (?) effort when he was filling in on the wing of all places and wound back the clock.

That was more or less how it was explained to me... that whilst its a bad injury, the part where it looks to me like a curved huge fracture in his face is actually not what i thought it was

But that's not to say it's not a bad injury.

I'm a bit worried that we are lacking a few our leaders at the moment, the importance of players like Bateman and soliola can not be understated. These 2 in particular give a huge moral boost to the rest of the squad, not only that, they are damm good footballers too.

Not just a moral boost, they lead the team in effort and commitment defensively.
I share your concerns. Who's going to push up now? who's pushing harder than the rest and shaming those who are a bit tired to reach deeper to match their energy?

Im not sure we have that guy defensively right now

Sia Soliola eating through a straw after horrific facial fracture

Soliola had surgery today, after fracturing his face on the weekend. He hasn't been able to eat solid food, instead blending food to drink through a straw.

"He's in good spirits, he's really positive about everything and that helps as well," Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad said. "He's our leader, he's always at the forefront of everything. It's a really good opportunity for the other middles to step up, especially for the young kids.
