2020 Rd 8 V Dragons: Game Day

Image

Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons
Friday July 3 6:00pm
Canberra Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, 2CC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Early frost. Possible late shower. Partly cloudy. Patches of light morning frost. Medium (40 per cent) chance of showers, most likely in the late afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming west to northwesterly 15 to 25 km/h in the morning. Chance of any rain: 40 per cent. Possible rainfall: 0 to 1 mm Min 1 Max 11 Cloudy and 7 degrees at kickoff, 6 degrees by end of the match. 50 per cent chance of rain from 10pm.

The Canberra Raiders return home to Canberra Stadium in Round 8 - for the first time since their opening fixture - for a clash with the Dragons. They will play in front of a crowd of around 1500 Raiders members.

Last round: 2020 Round 7. Parramatta Eels 25 - Canberra Raiders 24. It was a bit of a heart breaker. Let's face it, the Raiders didn't really deserve to win. If they had won, it would have been the great escape. But it was still heart breaking to see the team force the game into golden point - after two exceptional tries from Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in the final five minutes - only to lose their way in extra time. Both teams struggled a bit to set up for the field goal. But in the end, it was the Eels who were able to do it. And a Clint Gutherson field goal ended the prospect of an amazing comeback win for the Raiders.

More on Round 7: As I saw it

Team news: Raiders forward Corey Horsburgh requires surgery on a Lisfranc (foot) injury suffered in the loss to the Eels. The surgery has a recovery time of at least three months and it looks like he'll be out for the season. Joe Tapine (knee) returns at lock, with Hudson Young retaining his place in the second row. Jordan Rapana is out with a calf injury, with Bailey Simonsson coming in on the wing. Curtis Scott has been dropped to the bench, with Michael Oldfield starting at centre. The Dragons are unchanged from last week.

Late changes: Kai O'Donnell and Dunamis Lui dropped out of the Canberra Raiders squad on Thursday night, leaving Matt Frawley and Tom Starling on the extended bench. Billy Brittain and Tim Lafai were omitted by the Dragons.

History: The Raiders have won 18 of 30 games against St George Illawarra, and drawn one. Between 2003 and 2013, the Raiders were the Dragons' "hoodoo" team, with Canberra losing just one of the 16 matches played. However, the Raiders have now won just twice in the past seven matches between the clubs - an 18-14 golden point victory at Canberra Stadium in 2017 and a 36-14 win at Wollongong in 2019. St George Illawarra has only won four of the 16 matches played between the clubs at Canberra Stadium.

2019 Round 17: Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons

2018 Round 11: Canberra Raiders V St George Illawarra Dragons

Form: Raiders: WLWLL
Dragons: LLWWL

After the resumption of the season, the Dragons suffered embarrassing losses to the Warriors and the Bulldogs, before getting wins over the Sharks and Titans. They lost to the Roosters, 26-12, at Western Sydney Stadium in their last outing. The Raiders go into this match after back to back losses to the Sea Eagles and Eels.

Betting: The Raiders are $1.26 favourites, while the Dragons are paying $3.90. The Dragons have a big 10.0 points start in the line betting.

Stat attack: This is a battle between seventh (Raiders) and twelfth (Dragons) on the ladder. The Raiders scored four tries against the Eels, but their attack has been inconsistent, at best. They now rank 10th in the NRL for points and tries scored. That's still better than the 12th ranked Dragons, who are averaging just over two tries per match. The Raiders' defensive record is better, but also sliding. They have the fourth best defence in the league, behind the Roosters, Storm and Eels, conceding just under 14 points per game. The Dragons are outside the top eight defensive sides.

No team has had to make more tackles than the Dragons in 2020. Their effective tackle rate is pretty good really. But they've not been stopping tries. Zac Lomax (eight) and Matt Dufty (seven) rank in the top five players in the NRL for try causes. Often on the back foot, the Dragons are second only to the Broncos for running metres conceded. As a result they kick long more than any other team, and have posted the most kicking metres of any team (Raiders rank third).

The Raiders now rank third for most missed tackles in the NRL - but they've generally been very effective in defending the goal line. Josh Hodgson does a huge amount of work in defence, but he has now missed more tackles than any player in the NRL (42). Curtis Scott (seven) and Nick Cotric (six) are the Raiders with the most try causes - which is no doubt one reason behind Ricky Stuart's decision to swap his wingers, Cotric and Jordan Rapana, last week. There's some things to work on, but the Green Machine have conceded just one try in four of their matches this year, and more than two tries only twice.

The Raiders rank second in the NRL for errors, behind the Bulldogs (Dragons rank ninth). They also concede more penalties (six per game, ranked seventh in the NRL) than the Dragons. With just over four penalties conceded per match, the Dragons are the third most disciplined team. Josh Hodgson ranks equal first, with Joe Tapine, for most penalties conceded in the NRL (six), while Jack Wighton ranks third for errors (13). Discipline is an area that the Raiders will need to watch - as the lack of possession means the team is being tired out by their defensive load, with knock on effects for their attack.

It isn't all bad news on the attacking front, however. Elliott Whitehead ranks second in the competition for linebreaks (six). That's some achievement for a second rower. Only Brett Morris has more (seven). Nick Cotric ranks third for tackle breaks (39), ahead of James Tedesco and Kayln Ponga. George Williams is equal third, with Jake Trbojevic, for try assists (seven) - due in large part to his pin point kicking game. Only Shaun Johnson (10) and Luke Keary (8) are ahead of Williams. And Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is in the top five players for runs and running metres.

2020 Season record: Raiders 4 and 3 (7th, +31)
Dragons 2 and 5 (12th, -40)

Attack: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 10th on tries scored
Dragons 15 points and 2 tries scored per match, ranked 12th on tries scored

Defence: Raiders 14 points and 2 tries conceded per match, ranked 4th on tries conceded
Dragons 21 points and 3 tries conceded per match, ranked 10th on tries conceded

Possession: Raiders 48 per cent, Dragons 47 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 77 per cent, Dragons 78 per cent

Running: Raiders 1690 running metres from 181 runs (14 dummy half runs), 174 kick return metres, 561 post contact metres per match
Dragons 1796 running metres from 189 runs (10 dummy half runs), 201 kick return metres, 523 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 30, Dragons 32 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Dragons 2 per match

Try assists: Raiders 3, Dragons 2 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Dragons 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 8, Dragons 9 per match

Kicking: Raiders 597 kicking metres from 21 kicks per match
Dragons 654 kicking metres from 21 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 361 made, 34 missed, 14 ineffective per match, 88 per cent tackle efficiency
Dragons 390 made, 29 missed, 17 ineffective per match, 90 per cent tackle efficiency

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1501, Dragons 1614 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 12, Dragons 11 per match

Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Dragons 4 per match

Key match-ups:

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Matt Dufty. Dragons fullback Matt Dufty was the next big thing for quite a long time. After making 26 first grade appearances in 2018, he only played 16 games in 2019. But in his five games in 2020, he's shown how dangerous he can be in attack. He has three tries, five try assists, two line breaks, 27 tackle breaks and 169 metres gained per game. The Raiders will have to watch him. After scoring a double against the Eels, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad also has three tries, 29 tackle breaks and averaged 201 running metres per game. However, ball playing is not the Canberra fullback's strength. He has no try assists in 2020 so far. Defending at the back is tough, but Dufty has seven try assists, compared with two for Nicoll-Klokstad.

Jarrod Croker and Zac Lomax. Jarrod Croker is the Canberra Raiders' top try scorer of all time (127), but he's now gone eight games without scoring a try. He last crossed the white stripe in the 2019 Preliminary Final against the Rabbitohs at Canberra Stadium. He's come close though, most recently denied by the bunker in the clash with the Sea Eagles, for an almost indiscernible knock on. This week he clashes with Dragons young gun, Zac Lomax. Like Croker, Lomax kicks goals (19, Croker 20) - but Lomax also has four tries so far in 2020. Croker might not have a four pointer this year, but he has three try assists (Lomax nil). Lomax has more metres per game (102-58) and tackle breaks (17-11) in 2020, while both have two line breaks. Croker has often attracted criticism for his defence, but the critics have gone quiet lately. So far this year, Lomax has eight try causes (12 misses), Croker just two (six misses). Croker must fancy his chances of breaking his try drought this week.

Elliott Whitehead and Tyson Frizell. Elliott Whitehead has been the Canberra Raiders' best player in the past couple of weeks, but he's consistently good. He set up a remarkable try against the Eels, to push the game into golden point - with a great dummy and break. As mentioned, the England international (20 appearances) ranks second in the NRL for line breaks this year and he has now scored four tries. Dragons backrower Tyson Frizell is also an international, with 14 Kangaroos Tests and 11 Origin matches to his name. He's yet to score a try in 2020, and has one line break. He's still very damaging. He's made 255 tackles, posted a 95 per cent tackle efficiency rate and averaged 132 running metres this year. Whitehead has made 235 tackles, has an 87 per cent tackle efficiency rate, and averaged 85 running metres. They'll both have a big bearing on the outcome of this match.

Josh Papalii and Paul Vaughan. Paul Vaughan was born in Canberra, was a Raiders junior and made 85 appearances for the Green Machine between 2013-16. He was struggling be selected in firsts in 2016 with the Raiders, but he's proved a point after moving to the Dragons. He's been one of their best forwards since 2017 and has gone on to make six appearances for the Blues. Josh Papalii finished 2019 as the best prop in the country, but he himself has said he's been a bit off his best in 2020. He's not been far off. Papalii has averaged 155 running metres and posted 20 tackle breaks, 228 tackles and a 97 per cent tackle efficiency rate. He's also bagged two tries. Vaughan has averaged 161 running metres and made nine tackle breaks, 256 tackles and posted a 95 per cent tackle efficiency rate. He's yet to score. If I were awarding a "skin", Josh Papalii still takes this one.

Our tip: The Raiders are favourites in this game, but this will be a much tougher game than the odds indicate. The Dragons were in crisis not so long ago, with their coach Paul McGregor in danger of being sacked. But the Dragons have since regained their composure, produced some wins and put in a creditable performance against the Roosters. The Raiders have been performing poorly, objectively and by the standards they set in 2019. So this is a danger game. The Raiders will need a good start. They'll need to cut the errors and penalties. And the forwards will need to win the battle in the middle. If they can, the Raiders should be too strong. Raiders by six.

What they're saying:

Ryan Sutton: "The game against the Eels is gone, it's a long season ahead. We've got good motivation to go into this next game now. It's another test for us. We've just played against probably the pinnacle forward pack of the competition, we didn't play well and we got into extra-time. We're coming up against a quality pack and some quality outside backs, we've got to make sure we're on our game and we're doing the little minor details good."

Is it over yet?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Last year demonstrated to me that you don't need to win every big match to prove yourself, you just need to prove that you have the ability to do it at the business end of the year, while winning the games that you definitely should win.

This is one of those games that we definitely should win. If we don't win this match I think we may well write this year off as another 2017/2018 debacle.

It’s a gorgeous sunny afternoon here in Canberra. It will get cold later though and that should suit the Raiders.I wish I was going to the game!
Maybe they will have to hop on a bus and drive to Goulburn and back, just to get into the right groove to play - or maybe a more ‘normal’ preparation will be the winning factor in the end.
Go Raiders, get the 2 points however you can. Time to step back into the winner’s circle!

I remember once playing a junior basketball game where something like that happened. The other team looked like a bunch of monsters in the warmup. When the game tipped off their coach obviously ran their B team out, which we competed quite well against for 5 minutes. Then subs was called...their bench came onto the court and completely blew us away. We were down by 30 at half time.

I'd like to think this is exactly like that.

I think he's probably being a bit cautious with the knee injury and the concussion/niggles. Great chance to see Emre aim up.

I'm wondering if the papa to bench thing is part of a rotation policy. IF the scores are level or Raiders are ahead when papa comes on that is a scary prospect for the dragons

Not sure I get this many changes at once... We wanted a wake up on the right edge, now its shifts all over the park.

I worry we aren't showing the Dragons enough respect and assume we are going to walk it in... Which with our recent form is just crazy!

The teams are back in the sheds after the warm ups, enthusiastic crowd in attendance! One Raiders chant already.

Dragons on the field. Now the Viking Clap! Raiders on the field, the kick off we are underway!

Never get a Pollie to blow the horn. Too busy acknowledging his intro and missed his cue

Our worst Viking clap. Hopefully not a sign of things to come!

Routinely putting ourselves under needless pressure in the opening stanza of games this year
