Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers
Saturday June 13 7:35pm
Campbelltown Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, Mix 106.3
The Canberra Raiders came back to earth with a thud in Round 4, falling to the Newcastle Knights, 34-18. It was a fair reflection of the difference between the two sides. They now go back to Campbelltown Stadium in Round 5 for an away clash with the Wests Tigers - on one of the Tigers' home grounds. The Raiders will be without John Bateman (shoulder surgery) and Hudson Young (suspension). Ryan Sutton (calf) is potentially available, while coach Ricky Stuart says Jack Wighton should be right - after Wighton left the field for an HIA against the Knights. Joe Tapine could find himself in trouble with the match review committee for throwing punches just before full time.
So who would you like to see line up for the Green Machine in Round 5? Tell us your team here and see how you go in comparison to the official squad when announced. We will include the official line ups in the first post of this thread as soon as they're available.

Same team that beat the Storm
Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
In the presser, Stuart said he hasn't been happy with the last 3 halves (Melb + Knights).
Not sure if he's ready to make changes yet apart from Sia vs others starting perhaps.

I felt we really missed Rapana's hit ups early on in the game out of our own half. Would like to see him start.

Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
Even if they were about even the balance doesn't make sense. Rapana is a big hard running lad. Surely Rapana is best suited for starting and the younger zippier Simonsson can come on and run at tiring middle third players
Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
... i've exhausted myself arguing this. Which is quite a feat.
But i concur.

Cotric should be centre, Rapana wing, then Scott and Simonsson can fight it out for the wing spot

Rapana back in the starting 13.

I'd like to see a better bench rotation this week too. Horsburgh doing a 50min first stint when we were on the back foot was just silly.
I'm expecting a much better performance this week or we'll see some more changes.

Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
If Rapana starts I'd rather Oldfield on the bench than Simonsson. He has more utility.
If Sutton isn't back it might be worth blooding one of the rookie forwards this week as well. We need the depth and they need to rotate some of these lower graders at some point to keep them match fit.

Whatever 17 is selected, they need to switch on..
I'd like to see Rapana start as well.
Anyone who saw Madges pressa will know the Tiges players would have copped a spray and will come out firing..
Ricky is very dissapointed in what we dished out yesterday and I'm not expecting a repeat of that..

Looks like Joe is free to play on the weekend, wasn’t listed on the weekend charge sheet.
Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
I would have Rapa back on the right wing. He is much more experienced in the position and can talk to Scott about not going needlessly infield and leaving a 2 on 1 for the winger to try to defend. He has been through this exercise with BJ a couple of years ago. Cotric/Croker did well in 2019 on the left edge, along with EW and Jack. As for Scott, unless he believes he can stop the ball he should hold his position. Putting a shot on someone a second after the ball has gone does nothing positive for the team. Grasping at air even less.

Joey Leilua and fast starts on Canberra Raiders' minds for coming clash with Wests Tigers
The Canberra Raiders have two things to worry about this week: a fast start and former Raider Joey Leilua.
"It was a poor start by us and we just never recovered from it. Starting the game comes down to your kick chase, your tackle and hitting together and those small little things," Jarrod Croker said. "They're not skill things. It's more mental than anything. We'll cop our medicine this week. We need to cop it and we need to react. We need to accept it as a group. It's every single player in the squad.

I agree they are stupid actions and he has form (Melbs game last year one example) but part of me likes he mixes it up.

Absolutely. I don’t think you see champion sides fold like we did yesterday. The Roosters had a similar result against the Knights last year, but that was on the back of no Tedesco or Keary. The scoreline flattered us, should have been worse.
Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
Yep. That's what really worries me. We had close to our best team out there other than Bateman. Guess we'll find out in the coming weeks whether it was a once off or not - we had some bad games last year too but overall were excellent.

I would like us to go back to 4 forwards on the bench. Given we have no "reserve grade", I believe we would derive more benefit from getting game time in to their legs rather that running with a back on the bench.

For this game, I would like to see Raps replace Bailey, and Oldy replace Scott. Oldy has never let us down, think Penrith game last year and others when he replaced Joey for some games. He deserves a chance. Scott's performance was terrible and I did point out defensive errors against Melbourne when he rushed up the line and there were line breaks galore down his side by the likes of Munster and even Finucane but I got puzzled replies. Pls look closely at how certain players play. Also we need to look at juniors backs coming through like Harley Smith-Shields - look at Newcastle like Bradman Best and Tex Hoy - superstars in the making. We need a new injection - like last year with Young, Horse, Simonsson. I'm yet to be convinced of Bailey.
Horse on the bench, Sutton starting. Wests will be tough - we need to believe it. In fact, any team can beat any other team in this comp if you're unprepared.
We need to make changes. The performance was totally unacceptable - and reflected a side that thought they could just turn up and win. Last year we lost games as well but those were close. Canterbury and Gold Coast made changes with success this weekend.

Re: 2020 Rd 5 V Tigers: Teams and Previews
I said plenty of times regarding the loss of BJ, that we’d need to compensate for his workload in attack. We were exposed yesterday.
For starters, I hope we get Rapana in the starting side sometime soon.
Lui is clearly in the crosshairs of a lot of fans. I just don’t think he’s good enough as a starting prop at NRL level.
