Just put this here
This should be a warning to any club that wants to sign him. Doesn't matter what deal you give him he'll always be looking for a better offer.
I don't have any **** idea how that pathetic Twitter works at all but it looks to me like Luke is responding directly to a few people? Without their comments for context how can anyone judge what he is actually saying.

Secondly, nobody outside of the club and Luke know what went down, between those two parties. It was extremely strange when he signed a one year deal, so strange that I'm assuming that there is - again - quite a bit of context that us fans are missing.

I have heard enough stories of clubs simply discarding young players for any reason at all, to feel more sympathetic to the players than I do for the clubs. It used to be said that the average career for an NRL player was less than 50 games. That was a few years back, but I don't imagine it has changed much. That signifies a pretty cutthroat business and I think some fans have a tendency to lay into the players too often, too quickly and - again - completely lacking any insider knowledge of a particular situation.

It is disappointing to lose players of the calibre of John B, but it would be nice if our supporters could at least try to be a little mature about it and keep the personal crap to themselves.

He was slow and overweight (and reading between the lines, dragging his heels about losing it) and then there was the consistent stupid stuff he did on the field (e.g. putting knees into people's backs).

You've got to remember, Ricky made this decision before the six-again rule change, when the assumption was that the tight, low-error footy we employed so successfully in 2019 would be what was required again in 2020 and beyond. In that context, BJ was a poor fit going forward. In hindsight, with Scott being such a hopeless case and the rule changes placing a premium on game-breakers, a slimmed down BJ (assuming he would have knuckled under and lost the weight) would have been very useful. But, given the available information at the time, I think it's the correct decision that we release him.
He may have had his moments with this but I don't think it ever drastically impacted his performance on the park. The brain explosions were a constant risk, no debating that.
When Joey put the knees into Reuben Garrick's back for an 8-point try in our home loss to Manly last year, I think I actually heard Ricky's brain snap...

I’m not criticizing either Bateman specifically as we don’t know the full circumstances, and I certainly don’t begrudge a player trying to maximize their earnings over a short and physically debilitating career.

I do however think the argument of “clubs don’t show loyalty to players, why should players show loyalty to clubs” is a bit disingenuous. Clubs regularly move players on but AFAIK (correct me if I’m wrong) those players, one way or another, still end up with what they were promised in the contract ($X). Meanwhile if a player agitates for a release, the club certainly isn’t getting what they were promised (Y years).

Lol Luke Bateman tho...

Moving on, if I were John Bateman I'd be firing Moses immediately... advised him to knock back $750k/year at his current club only to field a max offer of $2mil over 3 seasons at the Bulldogs - a touch over $650k/year to have to move to Sydney to a club that doesn't look like becoming a serious contender any time soon. For Moses to think that he could have pulled an $850k+/year deal to then fall $200k/year short of the mark shows that he was very out of touch with the market. Surely a smart agent would have put whispers out there to at least get a feel for the kind of offers he could have potentially fielded rather than arrogantly assuming $750k is a lowball offer. I'd be pissed off and I wouldn't want him taking a single cent of my next contract if it were me.

Bingo.

The reason it is disingenuous to act as if there is equivalence between clubs' and players' contract dealings is that a club cannot break a contract without paying out or negotiating with another club pay out the full value of a players contract.

Meanwhile, a club knows full well that if a player wants to leave, in a practical sense; its over. There is a reason why clubs grant players releases to their own detriment, and it is because they know that more damage can be done by keeping a disgruntled player than just severing ties and copping the short term pain.

So drawing equivalence is wrong IMO.

Enough of the NRL player contract circus, says Canberra Raiders legend Laurie Daley

I've had the same manager - Steve "Chimes" Gillis - for the past 30 years. Now, I understand times have changed and the player-manager relationship may be a little different in the modern era. But I've got to say some of the stories you hear about some managers, and I stress some, not all, are pretty disturbing.

It's become a fairly cut-throat business with a lot of calculated manipulation going on behind the scenes between managers, players and clubs.

John Bateman's departure from Canberra Raiders highlights messy side of NRL

How life can change so quickly in sport. John Bateman arrived with a bang in Canberra in the 2019 season. Fast forward to July 2020 and his time in the nation's capital has come to an end.

So did Canberra do the right thing? It's too early to make that call. But one thing is for sure. As the Green Machine battle for a spot in the top eight, a fit and firing Bateman would be pretty handy right now.

Any chance Bateman sacks his manager when he's de-listed, says sorry to Rick and stays with us for more than the Wigan Offer and less than the Raiders original offer?

This is tough to understand but he was gone since grand final week.

It would depend on how firm the raiders are in reallocating his money, is it already on in offers on the table or is has not been actioned yet? And what is the Raiders appetite to keep him around now?

But I dont think it's as unlikely as others here... and by that i mean i would say if he played some cards right, got new representation, was willing to make a concession, i would think the plan to stay here long term would be to say "let me just stay on the deal we agreed to, no upgrade, give me a year to build the trust back and we'll talk next year with my new representation"

I dont think that's lotto odds, but it's less than 5%

Raiders seek salary cap relief for injured Bateman

Canberra are hoping a salary-cap dispensation claim for the injured and departing John Bateman can be fast-tracked in a bid to accommodate another quality back-rower by the August 3 transfer deadline.

Bateman injured his shoulder playing for Great Britain last November and was originally expected back in the early rounds. But Bateman required a second surgery in June, which prompted Raiders officials to explore the compensation claim because of the lengthy recovery. They needed to wait for specialists reports from the Great Britain medics before putting their case to League HQ this week.

They are basing it on the medical reports from the English team doctors. Given they are independent to the club I don't see why it wouldn't be granted.

If he goes to Wigan no one can begrudge that surely. Who would want to spend years away from your child? With everything that has happened this year, I have no dramas with it.

If he goes to another NRL club it will be akin to the dismissal. Well may we say God Save the Queen; because nothing will save John Dean Bateman 🤬
