What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
The guns that got away: Every NRL club’s biggest signing regret
RAIDERS
Mitchell Barnett
An aggressive, hard-running forward, Barnett was after more game time stuck behind a stacked Raiders forward pack. Canberra’s big men are still one of their greatest assets so they could live without keeping Barnett. It speaks to how smart some of Canberra’s recruiting has been in recent years, in particular the transformation last year to make their pack more mobile and dynamic.

I didn't want to lose Mitch Barnett, but he's probably not in the top 100 signing regrets for the Canberra Raiders.
Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
It's a bit hard to regret losing a player who didn't want to be here

Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
James Tedesco is surely the biggest recent signing regret. Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston are probably up there too!
Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
I liked him as a player but he looks like he hit his ceiling quickly and is pretty average at best.
Not counting Tedesco or Lazzo who was forced by the cap, I would say Ben Kennedy is the biggest.

For those we let go I'd say Ben Kennedy was a bigger loss than Barnett.
Ones that we tried to get but missed, Tedesco is the obvious one as he'd actually signed the contract.

If Mitch Barnett is the biggest regret we've had, then we've lived a charmed like
And i like Barnett and thought we should have tried to keep him, but he's a good FGer ... hardly a superstar

Matty 'Awful' Orford
By a mile.
Sign him, they said. He's a Dally M medallist, they said.
His biggest play for us was dropping the ball at the scrum base 20 metres out from our own line that resulted in getting beaten.

Yeah, Vaughan trumps Barnett comfortably. TPJ not so much.

A few.
Luke Priddis.
Ben Kennedy.
I really liked Jason Ferris.
Paul Vaughn.
Michael Monaghan.
Shame we couldn't keep Lazzo.
Big one was Kevin Walters but in that 1990 team onwards we wouldn't have a spot for him

My trauma-filled memories of the time period suggested that he did that more than once...?

Think he did it against the Broncos on a Friday night, but it didn't cost us the game.
He also kicked the ball into the crowd against the Tigers, like it wasn't even close to the field of play.
He was just utter ****, like FPN was **** but Orford was next level

Michael Monaghan was one that sprang to mind as we desperately needed a decent halfback at the time

It is a long time ago now, and we didn't reallymiss him ultimately but at the time I was angry at letting Nigel Gaffey go. I had convinced myself he was superstar material. Jeff Bell probably another.
Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
David Barnhill is another one.Cranky Old Man wrote: ↑April 16, 2020, 4:44 am It is a long time ago now, and we didn't reallymiss him ultimately but at the time I was angry at letting Nigel Gaffey go. I had convinced myself he was superstar material. Jeff Bell probably another.
Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
Yeah. It's clear now the club wanted to clear the decks for Carney as he popped up into the team straight after iirc.
You could argue the right call talent-wise but gee teaching Carney he had to be humble and earn his spot, not take RL for granted may have been the better long term move.

Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
The Carney, Dugan, Ferguson, Milford fiasco over nearly a decade really set us back as a club. Particularly the investment made in the key position guys.
Didn't help that Campo went down either.
The original article was misleadingly titled, but irrespective, it's hard to agree that Barnett was our biggest loss. I agree that Vaughan was more significant in that immediate period.

If it's players we regret letting go:
Ricky Stuart
Bradley Clyde
Glenn Lazarus

Re: What is the Canberra Raiders' biggest signing regret?
Losing Stuart and Clyde had the biggest cultural impact on the club, followed by Wiki.
As far as losing great players at or near the peak of their careers, I agree with Lazo, followed by Ben Kennedy and then Schifcofske.
