Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker reveals new reality for NRL players

Canberra Raiders co-captain Jarrod Croker says the season shutdown has reminded him just how fortunate they all are.

"I mean usually you go into training and everything is there on a platter for you. Your warm up, your stretching, your physio, your strapping, everything's just ready to go for you," Croker said. "You forget how much you get it given to you, so it's a bit of a reality check for everyone.

Canberra Raiders prop Sia Soliola says NRL clubs need four-week prep

Canberra Raiders prop Sia Soliola says NRL clubs will need four weeks to rebuild match fitness if the competition resumes this year.

"Everything is all about fitness now, just given the fact we've already had a pre-season and done the majority of our work," Soliola said. "Skills wouldn't be lost as much as the fitness element. Four weeks I think is a relatively fair amount of time to get the bulk of work in.

Canberra Raiders winger Bailey Simonsson eager to return to training paddock

Canberra Raiders young gun Bailey Simonsson admits he's been going a bit stir crazy cooped up at home.

"It's been hard especially because athletes are used to being outdoors all day running around and training," Simonsson said. "To be stripped right back to the bare basics and being restricted to our houses has been tough and quite challenging because I've got too much energy to be sitting inside all day. It's been a bit full on.

Canberra Raiders Josh Papalii's contracted golf not the coronavirus

Image

If Canberra Raiders enforcer Josh Papalii wants to play golf, he's got a whole lot of boxes to tick first.Train four times a week, six days of clean eating, and help his Masepa with the home schooling of the kids.

"She didn't want me playing golf every day. If I can I probably would, but if you're hitting not as well then you probably don't want to go too many times. It's just a bit of fun with the missus," Papalii said.

Canberra Raiders winger Nick Cotric blaming sleepless nights for snubbing Jarrod Croker's morning runs

While Nick Cotric may be brushing Raiders co-captain Jarrod Croker for early morning running sessions, the winger is linking with close mate Emre Guler to get through his programs of an afternoon.

"I am always teaming up with Emre Guler or Jarrod Croker but Croker goes for runs too early. I aim for about 1pm and he aims for 9am. Croker messages me at 9am to join him and I'm usually out cold. I'm not an early bird and like my sleep-ins.

Ricky Stuart interview:

Does the government have a reason not to trust the players? They have. It's very disappointing. I heard what Paul Kent had to say, I totally agreed with everything he had to say tonight. Everyone has to understand we're playing under the NRL rules, we have to do everything on and off the field to make the game work and get it back running.

You stay in the game because you're passionate, you love the game. You don't want people to criticise the game, but it's why you get upset when players cross the line.

We can only ask the players to do the right thing. We catch up on Zoom and apps, I'm really happy with the players that they are training. I've got trust with my players. I understand that people make mistakes. We now have to show as a game we're responsible. We're going to be under a lot of scrutiny. We have to show we're responsible enough to do this.

Rival rounds over five weeks. Will be interesting to see them, will decide who makes the eight. The longer the season, the more money for our clubs and the grass roots. The more football we play, the more money for the grass roots and the kids who play the game.

Mini pre season. Monday will be an information day, Tuesday will be the first day of any physical work. We've got to get back into it quickly. No time to be running round the oval. None of my players have not been training. I trust my players.

1990 Kangaroos Tour Second Test. One of my greatest memories of my career. Could have been my last Test. Britain should have won, and we'd have lost the Ashes. Throwing that intercept. When you look at the squad, the bench, who didn't make the team... it was a great squad. Laurie Daley broke his hand, couldn't play. Britain were tough. I've never been so happy to see Mal Meninga alongside. I was considering a "kick and hope"... glad I didn't. I've told people not to do it right through my coaching career.

Josh Hodgson interview on Fox League Live:

New centre of excellence? Fantastic, did use it prior to the break, first time on the field. We're certainly spoiled, it's got everything you can think of.

Jack Wighton. Struggling a little bit today, said he could do a bit more of isolation!

When we broke off, we spoke about coming back in good shape. Cannot come back a kilo over. We only have a few weeks to prepare, must now get the ball in hand.

George Williams? His girlfriend is here, I think he might have gone a bit stir crazy. But he was good, everyone happy to see eachother this week.

John Bateman. Looking good in the gym, did a bit of ball work today. Will be cautious on a return date, probably a week or two after we return to the playing field.

Jordan Rapana. We've got good depth now, with Cotric and Simonsson, and Oldfield as well. If you want to be a top team and successful, you need depth in your squad. Fantastic signing, we all love him as well.

Co-captaincy and RLPA discussions? Not just that we cared about the money. It was more than that. Some of the boys on minimum wage on the original proposal would have been in trouble - they'd have only had $17,000 before tax for the rest of the year - plus there is no injury hardship fund money. But we got the assurances we needed on conditions as well. The latest deal is a lot better than we might have expected. V'landys is a credit to the game.

Happy we will get the game back underway, a lot of people depend on the game for their livlihood.

Did players come back in good shape? Yes, want people happy to come back to training. Latrell Mitchell? I feel for him, some criticism justified, but I felt for him today, being criticised for not coming back in the best shape. I back the calls to lay off him a bit, he's such a young kid.

Your durability? It's been a bit of a challenge, I don't like taking time off. I probably need to get a bit more rest now for recovery now I'm getting a bit older. When I was out with my ACL, I realised how much I loved the game, and that's true of this break. For some like Josh Papalii, this enforced break might have a silver lining, given they've had a lot of pressure for extended periods.
