Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Journalist Matt Cleary put up this story today, on rugby league's most hated XIII: https://www.todaystale.com/leaguewhistl ... ed-s__fuVJ
The Greenhouse on Twitter had a go at the most loved XIII... https://twitter.com/TheGHRaiders/status ... 0294660096
It was, of course, 100 per cent Raiders.
1. Gary Belcher
2. John "Chicka" Ferguson
3. Mal Meninga
4. Jarrod Croker
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Laurie Daley
7. Ricky Stuart (we don't care what anyone else thinks!)
8. Glenn Lazarus
9. Steve Walters
10. Josh Papalii
11. Ruben Wiki
12. Brad Clyde (we have to fit in Toungey!)
13. Alan Tongue
Extended bench: Clinton Schifcofske, Terry Campese, Shaun Fensom, Jason Croker, Dean Lance, Ken Nagas, John Bateman and Sam Backo
What's your list?

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Mark McLinden should have been on the list, sadly overlooked.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
As for loved players, I think Chicka and Mal will be high on my list.
Of the not mentioned. Noa Nandruku and Terry Fahey will always remain fond memories as players who could do amazing single handed plays out of nothing.

That's a very beloved list!
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever
I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
I reckon Whitehead and CNK deserve a bench spot.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Outside of Tongue, Croker, and possibly Rapana that's the all time best Raiders side, so not sure how much different this is compared to that.
Straight off the bat I reckon someone like Vainikolo would be a shoe in given how popular he was when he was here. Jason Smith would deserve a run also.

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
It's tough. I'd drop Bateman, I think his grand final week contract talks just loses him the spot to Whitehead.
CNK will just miss out for now to Schif, but it's a matter of time for him to take the spot.

Albert Fulivai should of got a run, much loved.
Also Hodgson should of got a mention, one of the best signings in recent time. Remember 2016 Finals he broke a bone in his leg but played the next 2 weeks.
Blake Austin after his first year would of got on that list but decided to drink it up in his last 2 years

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Agreed. They're two of my absolute favourites and anytime you mention them to raiders fan they light up. True fan favourites.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
I was shocked for a moment... and then i wasnt.
Mark McLinden was, and id imagine still is a tremendous person, who represented this club extremely well on and off the pitch.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
On that note, Sia would be thereabouts, surely.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Scott Logan is another that comes to mind

Yeah, if this was actually a list of players who were well loved for their personality or passion, rather than just for pure skill and results, McLinden would definitely be up in contention with Stuart. Same as Campo over Daley. Not saying that Stuart and Daley weren't loved (which they obviously were), just that Macca and Campo were huge fan favourites in their time.

Scott Logan is a good one. John Lomax and Quentin Pongia would be in the squad of 30 as well I reckon.

Ashley Gilbert was a fan favourite, as was Peter Jackson, Jason Croker, Ken Nagas, Troy Thompson, Josh Miller (OK, maybe that's just me), Logan and most definitely Austin in his first season or so.

Sia on the bench and Weymo just post Daniel Conn.
Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Can only comment from when I became a fan (1997) so here's mine:
1. Mullins
2. Nagas
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Graham
5. Vainikolo
6. J Smith
7. Carney
8. Weyman
9. Hodgson
10. Logan
11. Papalii
12. Wiki
13. Jason Croker
Interchange
14. Tongue
15. Miller
16. Soliola
17. McLinden
Was trying to fit in Troy Thompson and Trevor Thurling but just couldn't find the room.
Carney probably controversial, but I'm going by the majority of his playing time here when he was the golden child.

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
Phil Graham is a good shout, he was such a fun player for a raiders team that really lacked a lot of excitement.
Would have loved to see how his career would have play out if he was in a team with better play makers and a more creative attacking coaching staff

Chris O'Sullivan and Sam Backo were fan favourites in their time, just keep the on-air microphone away from Sam.

The volcano has a spot over chicka or rapana for me, I would have also had mullins in there somewhere.afgtnk wrote: ↑March 28, 2020, 4:14 pm Outside of Tongue, Croker, and possibly Rapana that's the all time best Raiders side, so not sure how much different this is compared to that.

Re: Most loved Canberra Raiders of all time
John Ferguson was easily the most loved.
From a team of guns he stood out.
'Give it to Chicka.'
At that time Mal would be 2nd.
Post 2000 I'd say Alan Tongue, Troy Thommo.
Add Papalii and Jarrod from the current team.
