Canberra Raiders’ huge Grand Final gamble
FRIDAY, 8PM: Brisbane Broncos V Parramatta Eels at Suncorp Stadium (Round 12, 2008)
SATURDAY from 5PM: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs V Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium (Round 9, 2003)
SATURDAY from 7PM: Manly Sea Eagles V Melbourne Storm at Brookvale Oval (Round 1, 2014)
SUNDAY 3PM: Balmain Tigers vs Canberra Raiders at Sydney Football Stadium (1989 NSWRL Grand Final)
TIGERS: 1. Garry Jack 2. James Grant 3. Andy Currier 4. Tim Brasher 5. Steve O’Brien 6. Michael Neil 7. Gary Freeman 8. Steve Roach 9. Ben Elias 10. Steve Edmed 11. Bruce McGuire 12. Paul Sironen 13. Wayne Pearce (c) Interchange: 14. Michael Pobjie 15. Shaun Edwards 16. Kevin Hardwick. Coach: Warren Ryan
RAIDERS: 1. Gary Belcher 2. Matthew Wood 3. Mal Meninga (c) 4. Laurie Daley 5. John Ferguson 6. Chris O’Sullivan 7. Ricky Stuart 8. Glenn Lazarus 9. Steve Walters 10. Brent Todd 11. Dean Lance 12. Team News: Warren Ryan has made just one change to the side which beat the Rabbitohs in the major semi-final with Michael Pobjie replacing Tony Chalmers on the bench. Meanwhile Tim Sheens has gambled on a bench shake-up, handing injury-prone Steve Jackson just his fifth cap in first grade this season and squeezing in 21-year-old half Kevin Walters.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Will be tough for today's commentators to match the Channel 10 Sydney call of 1989.

I think it would also be tough to recreate the energy and emotion of calling the game, since they already know the outcomegreeneyed wrote:Will be tough for today's commentators to match the Channel 10 Sydney call of 1989.

Ben Ikin was 12 when his beloved Raiders beat the Tigers... Here, he remembers the greatest Grand Final of all time
The year was 1989. The score was 19-14. Canberra were victorious, Balmain were not. Many say it was the greatest rugby league grand final of all time. I don’t disagree, but I was a Raiders fan back then.
Mal Meninga was Canberra captain, ably supported by a stellar line up – Belcher, Stuart, Lazarus, Walters, Clyde, Daley – with coaching maestro, Tim Sheens in charge. The Raiders would become a formidable force in the years that followed, but in 1989 they were still more green than machine.

Canberra Raiders step back in time to '89 as it's time to relive the good old days
Given we are all locked indoors with nothing but our couches and our blank TVs for company, let's strap on the stubby holder, open the chips and tune into Fox League at 3pm on Sunday to find out if the Raiders can win.
“I'd just started dating a Canberra girl, probably three months prior to that game and she came up to the game,” Steve Jackson said. “I went downstairs to meet her and have lunch with her and her friends. I remember saying to that group of people, 'This is so exciting, just to be involved. I won't get a game tomorrow because there's eight fresh reserves'.”

The Raiders Round 7 2010 loss to the Rabbitohs will be on next weekend, I believe on Saturday.

Watched 89 on the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Geez Mal could tackle. Some of the hits he put on were ridiculous. You'd hate lining up against him.

These black jerseys were the best away jerseys ever.

This weekend on Fox...
Friday: Sydney Roosters V Wests Tigers 2010 Qualifying Final
Saturday: Newtown Jets V Manly Sea Eagles 1982 Minor Semi Final
North Sydney Bears V Brisbane Broncos 1994 Minor Semi Final
1991 Grand Final Penrith Panthers V Canberra Raiders
Brandy on Fox League Live now claiming the 1997 Grand Final is better than 1989, "leaves it for dead". He really does hate the Raiders, big time, doesn't he?

I'm enjoying Ginnane, Ennis, Cronk and maybe Voss re-calling these games.
Brandy destroys it for me.

Matt Johns tries to be clever with implied hindsight but doesn't work.
I have an audio cassette of Hollywood and Zorba calling 1989 Grand Final. It's real good. Unfortunately I don't have the extra time on it.

I liked the team who did the 1989 GF, they weren't trying to do the "we know something you don't know" commentary.Horace Dove-Edwin wrote: ↑April 14, 2020, 1:12 pm I'm enjoying Ginnane, Ennis, Cronk and maybe Voss re-calling these games.

I had completely forgotten this game, called a mate to ask him if he was watching it. He paused and goes ‘Mogg at **** halfback? We were furious our entire way back to Sydney, are you kidding rewatching that?’

Bloody hell that's a decent reserve grade team. Gale, Carey, Gaffey, Stone, Boyd, Gregory, a young Furner off the bench. Paul Beath was a solid fullback too. Man we had a stacked club back then.

Couldn't count. One cupboard in the lounge is devoted to it. That’s not quite all of them. Since I got the IQ3 they’ve made it too hard to keep them on DVD. I decided to depend on digital archives being available eventually.

I've put the pic in the post above. Very thin jewel cases for the DVDs so there is a lot.

Re: Fox League Classics this weekend... with new commentary
This happened in the lead up the pre game entertainment...
Re: Fox League Classics this weekend... with new commentary
The Panthers were dirty in the first half, especially Geyer. Meninga three goals missed... could have been up 18-6 at half time.
Re: Fox League Classics this weekend... with new commentary
The Raiders' defence in the second half was great. In my view, if Stuart, Daley and Lazarus had been fit, they would have won.
