2020 Rd 2 V Warriors: Game Day

Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors
Saturday March 21 3:00pm
Robina Stadium
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Sunny. Winds west to northwesterly 15 to 20 km/h shifting east to southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h in the middle of the day then tending south to southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h in the evening. Chance of any rain: 0 per cent. Min 19 Max 31

2020 Round 1. Canberra Raiders 24 - Gold Coast Titans 6. The Raiders were good in the first half of their season opener, very good - and they dominated the Titans. Canberra could have easily gone to the break with a 30-0 lead. The Gold Coast outfit grafted their way back into the contest in a fairly ugly second half. The Raiders were disrupted by the loss of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, just before half time, to a head knock. The Titans were very willing to concede penalties rather than points, while the likes of fullback Phillip Sami caused some problems for the Raiders' defence. But the Raiders scrambled when they needed to, and were unlucky to concede any points at all.

More on Round 1: As I saw it

The Raiders now face the New Zealand Warriors, not in Auckland as originally scheduled, but on the Gold Coast - with the match relocated and to played before no spectators, due to coronavirus restrictions on travel and public gatherings. The Warriors have based themselves at Kingscliff, after their decision to remain in Australia so matches could proceed.

Team news: Coach Ricky Stuart has named an unchanged starting line up. Joe Tapine has been formally named in the second row and Corey Horsburgh at lock, after their "late" switch of positions last week. Ryan Sutton has been included on the extended bench after serving a suspension in Round 1. Jarrod Croker and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad suffered head knocks in the clash with the Titans, but are fit for Round 2. The Warriors will be without Peta Hiku and Patrick Herbert, who returned to New Zealand for family reasons. Adam Pompey and Adam Keighran take their spots. Eliesa Katoa has been moved into the starting side and Isaiah Papalii to the bench.

Late changes: The Raiders omitted Harley Smith-Shields and Tom Starling from their squad on Friday afternoon, while Karl Lawton and Adam Tuimavave-Gerrard dropped out of the Warriors squad.

History: Canberra has won 22 of 42 games played against the Warriors. The Raiders have won two of the past five matches between the clubs - and five of the last 10. In Round 20 last year, Canberra came away with the competition points, winning 46-12 in Auckland. However, the Warriors got the victory in Round 25 at Canberra Stadium, after the Raiders had already secured a top four finish and rested some of their star players. Obviously, the clubs have never played against each other at Robina before.

2019 Round 25 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

2019 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

2018 Round 25 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

2018 Round 3 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

Form: Raiders: LWWLW
Titans: LLLWL

The Warriors have won just one game in their past five - their final match of the 2019 season against the Raiders. They are coming off a 20-0 loss to the Newcastle Knights in Round 1.

Betting: The Raiders are firm $1.20 favourites, while the Warriors are paying $4.40. The Warriors have a very big 12.5 points start in the line betting. The Warriors odds have lengthened over the week.

Stat attack: The Raiders finished fourth in 2019, while the Warriors placed 13th, winning only nine matches. The Warriors scored an average of 18 points and conceded 24 points per match. The Raiders meanwhile averaged 22 points scored and conceded just under 16 points per game.

Our tip: This will be a tough assignment for the Warriors, particularly given the disruptions to their preparation and given they have been forced to play their home game, away. Still, the Raiders must not expect an easy contest. The Warriors have some dangerous attacking players in fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and outside backs, Ken Maumalo and David Fusitu'a. Kodi Nikorima adds unpredictability. But, if the Raiders are switched on - as they were in the first half against the Titans - they should be far too good for the New Zealand outfit. Raiders by 12.

What they're saying:

Elliott Whitehead: "After pre-season being everywhere, we really wanted to get off to a good start and I thought we managed to do that against the Gold Coast. We probably fell away a little bit in the second half and made a few more errors, but we’ve looked at that and hopefully we can fix that this weekend."

Obviously the only major change is the Tapine/Horsburgh switcheroo. Worth the experiment last week I guess.

It’s a pity we don’t get to see Leilua come up against a small halfback at Centre.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Post by The Nickman »

Game day lads! I have to admit, I wasn’t convinced they’d go to the Gold Coast because it’s one of the “CV-hotspots” in Australia, but now that we’re here, I’m bloody relieved to get at least one more Canberra Raiders game!

Here’s hoping the players can fly in and fly out without harm and keep their minds on the job today. It would be very easy to be distracted, but they proved last week they’ve got all the tools to get the job done and get it done well in 2020.

Wherever you are across this great nation or the world, I hope you’re all absolutely safe and sound.

You pack of degenerate ****.

Adam isn't a small guy (for a half anyway). He's a good player. I'm interested to see how he goes.

Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand this morning...

Been a strange week, been uncertainty about where we're playing. But we've kept to the same training schedule we'd planned originally. It's our job to do it, to keep the game we love going. The Warriors are a big, physical team, they've been in camp and I expect their training and preparation has been as good if not better than otherwise.

Will be like a very professional scrimmage, we train like that before no crowd every week, we'll show a professional approach to playing today. I've no doubt we will handle the situation, we need everyone to contribute to their performance and we will be OK. Playing without a crowd, with no noise will be different. We have to generate our own electricity, sometimes we block the crowd out, we must be focussed on what we're doing. In the middle of executing a play, you are not hearing too much, there is concentration on what is at hand. It will seem strange in the "dead" parts of the game, after an error or a try.

NSW Cup suspended. Our top 36 players will be effectively quarantined at Braddon, feel sorry for the other players who just want to play, but lower grades are suspended.

There is going to be a lot of interest in the games, I've watched the last three games, some exciting games last night. Nice burden to have, it is important to have the game for social reasons.

Big test for the boys. The Warriors are my pick for the spoon and they have obviously been in all sorts this week. Hopefully our lads are switched on for a good performance. This could be one of those games that degenerates into an error festival if we let it.

This game has a Warriors ambush written all over it.

In saying that, we are good enough to handle it if we are switched on and completing highly.

What an eerie feeling this build up is. Can't help but feel for the warriors given their circumstances.

That being said, let's smash 'em boys.
