Good lord it's happening! Anyone know what day the team lists come out?

1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad
2. Bailey Simonsson
3. Jarrod Croker (c)
4. Curtis Scott
5. Nick Cotric
6. Jack Wighton
7. George Williams
8. Josh Papalii
9. Josh Hodgson (c)
10. Sia Soliola
11. Corey Horsburgh
12. Elliot Whitehead
13. Joseph Tapine

14. Michael Oldfield
15. Ryan Sutton
16. Dunamis Lui
17. Emre Guler

I went for Oldfield over Havili. I expect Havili to be injured and we're already down 1 second rower that can slot into the centres.
If Scott is suspended Oldfield to start. HSS onto the bench. Given trial form I'd like to pick Timoko but he's on a development contract.

Horsburgh wasn't as bad in the 2nd row as I was expecting. Most of what he did wrong was pushing passes, which is an easy fix. If it goes horribly we can always push Tapine out.

18. Sam Williams
19. Harley Smith-Shields
20. Tom Starling
21. JJ Collins

That Horsburgh, Williams, Scott, Cotric edge is probably lining up against Proctor, Roberts, Kelly, Sami.
Geez I know who I'd have my money on.

I’d go:

1-CNK
2-Cotric
3-Croker
4-Scott
5-Simmonson
6-Wighton
7-G.Williams
8-Papalli
9-Hodgson
10-Soliola
11-Whitehead
12-Tapine
13-Sutton

14-Horsburgh
15-Lui
16-Guler
17-Havili

Oldfield in and onto the wing if they suspend Scott, Cotric to centre.
Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just the train that's about to hit you.

Josh Papalii says Canberra Raiders ready to cover any NRL scenario

Josh Papalii has declared one Canberra Raiders young gun is ready to become a staple in the NRL side as another ponders a move across the Tasman.

"Sticky [Stuart] has got a good structure there. We still don't know who is going to play in round one," Papalii said. "I think Sticky is probably going to go with the safe option and use the team that played in the [grand final]. In saying that, we've got a lot of players that can fill in."

Has Proctor changed to the left after 10 or so years?

Most of those Titans names there are good, under rated players IMO.

Would it be wise to splash some cash on titans 1-12? This has all the signs of impending disaster... an extremely disruptive off season, new and un-tested combos, players injured/suspended/carrying niggles, the weight of expectations, and of course the fact we are playing the worst team in the comp... I can see the "Sack Ricky" and "Season over" comments already.

On the other hand, infront of a packed stadium at home in round 1, surely we have changed and learnt from the 2017-2018 seasons and Ricky wont let history repeat itself. But if it does, you can bet your bottom dollar that Ricky will send chairs flying and rip the paint off the walls in the change rooms.

So what will it be raiders faithful? Celebrations at home or utter disappointment??

Yes him and Cartwright have swapped sides this year. We've got favourable match ups on both sides.

GWilly to be tons more dangerous once the weather cools and footing is slipperier, I thought he looked pretty dangerous on his feet and defence was solid too just needs to play some footy to get the timing and selection right. Twice he passed to Hors with 3 on 1 out the back and once he passed when a nice grubber had nobody at home.
Napa had some solid contact with Hors and GWilly a few times.

Post by LastRaider »

Not looking forward to this one at all. We still have an attacking problem and can’t structure a set of 6 at the line. We are still doing a hit up as a 5th tackle option! Left edge has no strike (Simmonson and Croker is not a strong combination) and the right edge is so disjointed they will be lucky to catch a pass.

We needed another trial.

Some suggested changes
1. Horse to play 13, Tapine to 11
2. Switch Cotric back to Crokers side. Adds more physicality to the edge
3. Consider bringing Semi Valemei in for Simmonson to bring the high ball in as an attacking option. (I know this one is a big call)
4. Simmonson to play 14

You want to play a guy that has looked green as all hell in his games so far this year over a guy who last year was way more than solid and has a heap more experience? That's not a big call.

George Williams adapting style to take Canberra Raiders one better

New Canberra halfback George Williams is ready to do whatever it takes to help Canberra go one better in 2020, which means adapting on the run.

"I was a bit rusty and we started pretty slow and went 10 behind but we still took something out of that. We got better as the game went on and found our groove. It's probably going to take time. On that right edge for me, I've not played with any of those other boys before so it will just take time.

The biggest dilemma the current player shortage creates is the makeup of the bench IMO.

Bateman last year essentially covered either the backs if we picked Havili or the halves/hooker if we picked Simonsson. Without him, Young and possibly Havili the pack which was been flexible and mobile in the past becomes very rigid. Whitehead becomes no dice as a centre/five-eighth cover because we're so short on second rowers.

You have to pick a back on the bench I'd say at the very least without Bateman. But then if Havili is down there's essentially no mid game coverage for the halves or hooker. I guess if we went with a back and no dummy half then we'd be reliant on Williams covering hooker and Croker ( I don't see another option) covering the halves.

Or you could hedge your bets and use Sam Williams to cover 9 and the halves and via Williams/Wighton the backs.

Our adaptability in these situations has been a real positive of late but we don't have it to start the year.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

CNK
Simonsson
Croker
Scott (Cotric)
Cotric (Oldfield)
Wighton
Williams
Papalii
Hodgson
Soliola
Tapine
Whitehead
Sutton

Havili (Lui)
Guler
Horsburgh
Oldfield (Smith Shields)

What I reckon I’d pick. But I’d say Hors will be edge, Tapine lock and Lui shuffling Sutton out of the 17 will be what’s picked.

Yeah you could, but for me im a proponent of idea of simplifying peoples roles, which allows them to perform at their best.
Id rather pull Oldy and Simmo aside and say, given the circumstances and the situation - Simmo, be prepared to play anywhere but ideally we want you off the bench and sniffing around the middle as a jack in the box, late in the game. Oldy, you're a pro. Go out and do your job as a winger.

I think you limit what impact Simmo can have as the impact guy when he's already logged 60 minutes as a winger, which is a seriously taxing role in 2020.
I also think its just better to let a combination play out the 80 if they can. There is a flow and sort of cadence to a game of footy and i think where you can, you want to let two seasoned vets like Croker and Oldy figure that out early and go with it, rather than shuffle in Oldy off the bench, and Simo in the middle etc

Then reassess the following week when Sutton is back, where Simmo is probably my winger, Havilii my #14 and Oldy back to Mounties

Spot on Botman. Simplifying a role for young NRL players is really important for their initial performance and progression.

It’s such a hard level to rise to, young players get lost within complex systems.

Bellamy has nailed the Keep it simple stupid approach.

I agree with that side Ilanraiders. Get the bigger natural offloader in Tapine on the right side and have the newby half and right center run off him. HorsPower to rip tear in the middle of the park. Left side looks very much like 2019 and that is a strength. CNK is safe at the back and I'll be interested to see how his support play develops this year. All three middle forwards, Papa, Sia and HorsPower have an offload and I hope CNK is going to be on the end of a lot of them. Midfield break then gives either left or right side options.

As always though it gets down to the defence. If we can restrict the Titans with solid, sound, drive them back defensive plays then I reckon we have enough in attack to come away with the two competition points.

People underestimate the importance of Bateman to this side - we went 0-4 without him last year, including losses to the Cowboys and Warriors.

I have been told by a couple of people fairly close to the Titans that they are looking sharp and much better under Holbrook. This is a big danger game.
