Canberra Raiders signing George Williams hopes to break English halfbacks’ long premiership drought

George Williams’ mission to become the first English halfback to win an NRL premiership in 44 years is ready for launch. The last English No.7 to win a competition in Australia was Gary Stephens in 1976.

“George has had a disrupted pre-season, but we're happy he's been able to pick up his training load to the point where he’ll play next weekend,” Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said. “He’ll get some time with Jack (Wighton), which is great.”

Yeah, statistically speaking he's up against it, but we've had a few quality Pommie halves in the comp over 'recent' years, including Andy Gregory Shaun Edwards and Gareth Widdop etc. Like all the Poms, his biggest challenge will be performing at a high level every single week.

What i have seen of George he is very much like Bateman, Elliott and Hodgo so quietly confident

A hard worker, bit of aggression/mongrel about him

Ryan needs a little more mongrel about him, and Jordan less ego
