I reckon Horsburgh is equally as well equipped as Tapine to do the job a bit wider. Seems to have reasonable footwork and lateral movement for a big unit.

If Murchie is leaving he probably needs to be replaced by a genuine second rower who can fill in in first grade, not a Flegg player imo. A hybrid edge forward/centre type on a one year deal would be good.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

We seem to really have injury management and rehabilitation down pat over the past couple of seasons but did we screw this one up, given the issue was known? Players commonly go in for surgery of all types once the season is over for maximum recovery time, so thinking a bad decision has been made here.

Whatever the case, it's a big loss - and probably the only point in Sticky's coaching career where the second row cupboard is a bit bare.

There won’t be outside recruits, is my best bet.

Agree. Unless it’s a already established player, which it won’t be coz how many of those are available at this point in the year on a Murchie level salary? I’d rather go with someone who has been through our entire offseason and knows the system.

John Bateman sidelined until Round 7-8 after shoulder surgery

Post by LastRaider »

Anyone else not feeling good about this year now. Scott, Bateman and Young out for a 1/3 of the season. We lost Leiluia, Rapana and now Murchie from 2019. Kris is on leave and an unproven NRL halfback from England... chuck in that we will lose Papa, Wighton and Cotric over Origin period with Horsbough on the cusp of a Origin start... feels like a long season ahead

Sorry if this has been answered - but why did it take so long for Bateman to have this surgery? His shoulder was bothering him last season, would have thought at the latest after his last International match was the time to have it.

And we only need one trial. You don’t need match fitness or combinations in trials as you can get that in pre season training.

I'm not so sure about that and tbh struggle to believe you can run training at match conditions, regardless of how you set it up. These are finally tuned machines, physically and psychologically geared to give their all in the 80 minutes on game day. A training session can't bring out the exact same.

Seems to me to be more of a case of wanting to minimise as many risks as possible in order to keep players injury free, and if the trade off for that is slightly reduced match conditioning heading into the season proper, so be it. No problem with though and it's a risk well worth taking IMO.

Try not to worry..

Bateman, Scott and Young will be back before the Origin starts..

If we hold our ground until after Origin we'll come home with a wet sail and hit the finals on fire.

The 2019 Raiders are now the blueprint, that defensive effort is now SOP !!!

Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman hoping to trim a week or two off his recovery time

John Bateman has begun putting his left shoulder to the test in the gym but is hesitant to nominate which round of the NRL season he will be back.

"I've just done my first weight session with it – felt a bit weird. But I feel really good. I don't want to say if I'm in front or behind schedule but to be honest I'm definitely not behind at this point in time."

I can recall a number of times last season when he got up after contact with what looked to be a pretty sore shoulder.

Hopefully this will sort the problem moving forward.

Shocked, gobsmacked...

This guy could lose a leg in a farm tractor accident, get it reattached and not even miss training.

If he doesn't play rnd 1 don't be shocked to see him a week later..

Canberra Raiders star John Bateman to learn fate on Friday

John Bateman's trip to the surgeon on Friday will decide when the Canberra Raiders star will be ready to play.

"He's progressing. He's seeing the surgeon on Friday, so we're hoping to get some more positive information on his progression," Raiders head of physical performance Nigel Ashley-Jones said. "But his rehab is going very well. We're happy with where he's at at the moment. It's a very weird shoulder problem that took a lot of good minds together to sort it.
