John Bateman undergoes minor shoulder surgery

Canberra Raiders forward John Bateman has undergone minor surgery today to fix an ongoing shoulder issue. There was hope the injury would be treatable without surgery, it hasn't improved enough. The surgery will give him the opportunity to fix the issue without any ongoing effects. (Expected return: Indefinite)

Well ****. Hopefully he's there for round 1. If not this probably sees Sutton start at 13 and Tapine move out wide.

As long as they don’t rush the recovery.

Hudson Young’s stupidity could bite us again ifBateman has a few weeks out.

It’s really frustrating how the club continues to use ‘indefinite return’ on injuries. How hard is it to let the fans know of a rough timeframe.

NBA teams give you an exact date that players are going to get re-assessed on long term injuries.

Might need the surgeons report before they can do that.

Shame Hudson got himself suspended until round 6. Taps takes his edge, Sutton/Red Horse to lock.

True. If he misses the first few rounds so be it.

Interesting to see how they handle it. Our recovery times last few seasons have been excellent.

Personally I prefer to see Murchie fill the edge and everyone else stay in their lane, rather than a host of shuffling right at the start of the season when we are actually trying to build our combos.

Sucks for GWilly too. Which I just realised is probably going to influence who RIcky puts in there- fair to ask a rookie and a player brand new to NRL footy to defend an edge which will already have a makeshift centre?

Hopefully the operation goes well and it is a 6 week recovery and not a couple of months.

End of last season he looked like he was going to end up at lock. I can't see him spending an extended period on the edge.

@nrlphysio on Twitter

John Bateman has undergone minor shoulder surgery to fix an ongoing issue, no set return date but will be reassessed closer to Rd 1. Not much detail to go off regarding expected recovery; best case some minor shoulder “clean outs” can allow a return to play in as little as 3-4 wks.

Any truth to the rumour that he performed the surgery on himself using a crowbar and rusty cutlery?

He’s also back training, and somehow he’s faster than before

Hmmm looks like it has been around for a little while. Have to ask, why was it not treated prior to the GB tour or at least quickly post it. Seems like it should have just been tended to asap, as to not risk any further injury.

Ugh, this pre season isn't shaping to be our greatest.

I’d say this is a very minor operation with with no real threat to him starting the season. The way I read the tea leaves is that the announcement is timed to take some attention away from the Curtis Scott incident and to try and reset the Raiders news cycle. If it was serious, he would not have played for England, or, he would have had the clean out straight after that series.

Just reading the tea leaves.

That news that Murchie looks destined for the middle seems pretty silly short term while Young is out imo.

Our past options of shifting Papa and Sia are now just that; past options. It leaves only 4 edge forward options in the entire squad which is precarious.

Unless you're going to lipo the size out of him he's going to need a decent spell playing on the edge. Which would be fine just need a 4 forward bench.

We're not privy to behind the scenes but maybe Murchie partly requested the move instead of being stuck behind two internationals, HY and at a pinch Tapine. Just a thought.

He seemed to put on a lot of bulk last year and still very solid this year. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if it was not intentional. Not to say he's not incredibly fit.

Coming off a successful season
Certain key players lost
Tipped for the premiership
Major off-field incident with high profile player
Other pre-season disruptions
Being rated the best pack in the comp
Untimely injury to key player
Ricky Stuart as coach

This movie, think I may have seen it before....
