Launching pad: Fringe players set to light up the NRL Nines

Valentine Holmes, Kalyn Ponga, Jack Bird, Semi Radradra and Latrell Mitchell have used the NRL Nines to kick start their careers. Check out the fringe first graders hoping to make a name for themselves this year.

Harley Smith Shields

The reigning Canberra Jersey Flegg player of the year is a classy centre blessed ... Smith-Shields excelled in the under-20s ranks for the Raiders last season.

That strikes me as an incredibly weird set up. I don’t remember how they did it in previous years but you have 4 in a pool but only play 2 group games?

Then half the teams make the finals.

Bizarre.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

There were four pools but every club played the three other teams in their pool.

So we're sending a squad all the way to Perth for 2 games of 9s?

Correct. Less than 40 minutes of football. Which is all the Raiders will play, I suspect, based on the approach to the Auckland Nines.

Hope Sticky sends the bare minimum squad. No point getting serious about a halfarsed event.

The NRL and the clubs did a great job killing off what was a great promotion for the code. I don’t know why they’ve resurrected it... particularly in this form.

I think the concept is good but should be held sometime else in the season. Maybe grand final week, Friday and Saturday. Grand final teams excluded and have a few invitational teams - whether it's a Pacific side, Maori or Indigenous or even a few ESL teams?

I'm confused with the whole set up

Why have a pool of 4 and only play twice?
Why Friday and Saturday? Friday starting at 4:05pm local time means those going Friday have either travelled for the weekend or have to take the day off work

Also means it ends pretty late Sydney time so how many viewers will they get?

Thats a long way to go for less then 40min of footy, no wonder teams wont take it seriously

Not sure how its selling the game in perth based on that model

Most teams train up until Grand Final week anyway, give fans of the other clubs something to focus on

I think the issue is... the players have to be given time off, five weeks as I recall under the CBA. Post the season is now the representative window, for the World Nines, in the years we have them, and Tests. The teams that miss the finals mostly use that time to give their players a break (if they’re training up to the Grand Final, they’re the exception)... because if they don’t, they eat into the pre Christmas period for the next pre season training. The Raiders’ experience this past off season showed that a combination of playing in the Grand Final and rep footy means they didn’t get a good part of their squad back for pre season preparations until the New Year.

I can also understand why the NRL would want full attention on the Grand Final in Grand Final week. I can’t see much promotional benefit for the code in playing club Nines on Grand Final weekend. In fact, it’d be a distraction from your marquee event of the year. The media is already wall to wall full of Grand Final coverage.

Give it up PJ. That ship has sailed for you. Maybe get in touch with West's Tigers if you want a run.

Canberra Raiders resist drafting a past great for Perth NRL Nines

The Canberra Raiders are set to resist the urge to draft a retired star into their NRL Nines squad. Sia Soliola, Sam Williams and Elliott Whitehead are confirmed for the Raiders Nines squad.

"The exciting part about that is we can substitute whenever we want," Sam Williams said about the Nines. "I don't think it will be long stints out there. It's all good. If I happen to get in the clear I'll always be coming straight off anyway."

Oh boy! The early return of Team List Tuesday!!!
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

The Soliola selection is a bit of a surprise.

Of the other senior players, I'd like to see Havili, Tapine and Horsburgh get a run. HSS woild also be good.

Elliott Whitehead to captain Canberra Raiders at NRL Nines

It'll be a proud moment for Elliott Whitehead, captaining the Canberra Raiders at the NRL Nines.

"Matt Timoko's been going well and Harley Smith-Shields. It's going to be good to watch them, especially if they get a bit of open space up there and show what they're capable of doing. It will be a proud moment for me to lead them out there. Hopefully they go well and give Ricky something to think about."
